Izz al-Din al-Haddad set to lead Hamas after former chief Muhammad Sinwar killed in Israeli strike
Izz al-Din al-Haddad is now seen as the likely new leader of Hamas following the death of Muhammad Sinwar, the head of the group's military wing, in an Israeli airstrike earlier this month.
Al-Haddad is the most senior commander left from Hamas's pre-war Gaza leadership and is expected to take over operational control, reports the Jerusalem Post.
Sinwar, who had led Hamas since the assassinations of Yahya Sinwar and Muhammad Deif in 2024, was killed on May 13 during a precision airstrike on the grounds of the European Hospital in Khan Younis. The IDF confirmed the attack also killed Rafah Brigade commander Muhammad Shabana and South Khan Younis battalion chief Mahdi Quara.
Over 50 precision-guided munitions were used in the 30-second strike, which reportedly hit a Hamas command centre beneath the hospital without damaging the facility.

Al-Haddad has long served on Hamas's Military Council and led the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades in Gaza City since 2021. In November 2023, he was appointed head of Hamas's northern Gaza brigade. According to The Jerusalem Post, he is now the last surviving member of Hamas's five original brigade commanders in Gaza.

Known for his secretive profile, al-Haddad is believed to have survived six Israeli assassination attempts and carries a $750,000 bounty. He was a key planner of the October 7, 2023, attacks on Israel and is reported to control the group currently holding Israeli hostages.
With most of Hamas's senior figures now gone, al-Haddad is expected to direct both military strategy and negotiations over hostages. Israeli defence minister Israel Katz has warned him directly, saying: 'You are next in line.'

Russian woman leaves India with child: SC raps Delhi Police for ‘sheer negligence' in custody dispute case
Hearing a child custody dispute between a Russian woman and her Indian husband, the Supreme Court on Friday said that she has left the country with the minor child due to the 'sheer negligence' of the Delhi Police. It also urged the authorities to get in touch with the Indian Embassy in Moscow to bring the minor back. 'At the outset, we are constrained to observe that the incident of taking away the child by the petitioner has happened apparently due to sheer negligence and failure of the Delhi Police in performing its duties in terms of the direction contained in… our order dated May 22, 2025,' a bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi said. The bench said that on May 22, it had directed that a discreet but strict vigil be kept on the woman. Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati, appearing for the Union government, had on the last date of hearing told the SC that the woman, after leaving her rented accommodation in Delhi, had travelled to Russia via Nepal and UAE with the child. '… that means for four days, she was in Nepal. Had the Delhi Police taken any course of action, we are quite sure that preventive measures could be taken to not allow her to board the flight,' the SC said on Friday. The bench added that 'forging/duplication of the passport of the child', which has been 'committed', was also 'apparently not considered by the Delhi Police'. The SC called this a 'flagrant violation of its orders'. Observing that it was not 'that simple' matrimonial dispute, the bench said, 'The Union of India also must keep in mind that the minor child has been taken from the custody of this court. It is not a case of a custodial dispute between the parents of the child, whose custody has not been handed over to either the father or the mother. It was in exercise of our duty as parens patriae that we were resolving the issue and the child was in the custody of the court.' Bhati said that while authorities are trying to get information from Nepal, the UAE, and Russia, foreign airlines, citing privacy, were reluctant to share travel data. But the SC said that no airline can claim privacy when a crime is committed. It maintained that the authorities should make an effort to bring the child back to the country by exploring diplomatic channels and talking to the Indian ambassador in Moscow. It gave 10 days to the Delhi Police to file a fresh status report depicting some tangible action to bring the child back. Referring to its May 22 order, the bench said that it had then asked the police to maintain discreet but effective vigil over residences of both parents and to depute women personnel who could enter the woman's residence in case of an emergency. However, this was not done even after the man complained; the court pointed out, adding that the CCTV camera footage showed the woman leaving the premises with the child through the back door. Justice Kant asked, 'What were the police doing?' He added that 'it is a clear case of criminal negligence' and that the court will not spare the police. Missing wife back day after Kolhapur man cremates body recovered from Krishna River he thought of hers
Kolhapur: A woman reported missing for 11 days returned to her home at a village in this western Maharashtra district, a day after her husband cremated a body recovered from the Krishna River in Miraj believing it to be that of his wife's, police on Friday said. The Miraj police are now ascertaining the identity of the deceased woman whose last rites were performed by Mahesh Thanekar (32), a resident of Udgaon village in Shirol taluka. Thanekar had on July 23 lodged a missing person's complaint with the Jaysingpur police in Kolhapur, stating that his wife, Sanjana, had gone missing since July 19. On July 29, the Miraj police told Thanekar that they had recovered a woman's body and that he should visit Miraj Civil Hospital to identify the victim. The police said the face of the woman, whose body was recovered from the Krishna, was swollen to the extent that Thanekar was initially unable to recognise her. But based on her clothes, which were like the one Sanjana was wearing when last seen, Thanekar concluded that it was his wife, the police said. The body was handed over to him and the last rites were performed on July 30 at Udgaon. CBCI president meets BJP state chief, demands nuns' release
Thrissur: BJP state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar on Friday met Catholic Bishops' Conference of India (CBCI) president and Thrissur Archbishop Mar Andrews Thazhath over the arrest of two nuns in Chhattisgarh. However, the meeting didn't appear to have gained much ground in assuaging the wounded feelings of the Christian community as Thazhath stuck to the church's stance that the arrest of two nuns was in effect denial of religious freedom and unconstitutional. Addressing a joint media briefing in Chandrasekhar's presence, Thazhath said immediate steps must be taken for the release of the two nuns. He said attacks and discriminations against Christians were on the rise across the country, though the forms may vary in different states, and govt must take steps to curb them. "Those two sisters were working for poor leprosy patients. They were there (in Chhattisgarh) for about 40 years. We are deeply pained and saddened that they have been arrested. They should be released at the earliest. Govt must ensure justice and security for minorities, particularly to those nuns. We should be able to live as free citizens of this country," said Thazhath.
