Malaysia PM Anwar begins week-long trade trip to Italy, France and Brazil

KUALA LUMPUR – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will embark on a week-long tour covering three major economic hubs – Italy, France and Brazil – to bolster economic, trade and strategic ties, according to the Prime Minister's Office (PMO).
The Prime Minister's senior press secretary Tunku Nashrul Abaidah said the official visits, from July 1 to 7, will include high-level meetings with counterparts in Rome, Paris and Rio de Janeiro, with the three markets collectively recording bilateral trade worth RM50.91bil last year.
Anwar and his delegation, which includes senior officials and a business delegation, will travel via a chartered Malaysia Airlines flight.
'The government hopes a series of high-level meetings in Rome, Paris and Rio de Janeiro will strengthen friendships, boost trade and open up new opportunities for Malaysians and the Asean community,' he said during the PMO's daily briefing.
In the Italian capital, the Prime Minister will hold a one-on-one meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at the Chigi Palace.
The meeting will provide an opportunity for both leaders to take stock of the current state of Malaysia-Italy relations and explore avenues to further strengthen cooperation, particularly in the fields of economy, defence technology and energy.
The two leaders will also exchange views on regional and international issues of mutual concern, including the Asean-Italy Development Partnership, Asean-European Union Dialogue Relations and the situation in the Middle East.
As Asean Chair for 2025, the Prime Minister will also highlight Malaysia's priorities and the regional grouping's efforts in addressing regional and global challenges.
Anwar will also officiate the Malaysia-Italy Economic Partnership Roundtable, bringing together industry leaders from both Malaysia and Italy to explore opportunities for trade and investment collaboration.
He is also scheduled to meet leaders of the local Muslim community and engage with the Malaysian diaspora in Italy.
In Paris, Anwar is scheduled to meet French President Emmanuel Macron to discuss various issues, including trade, technology and education, said Tunku Nashrul.
'In addition to a business roundtable meeting with major French industry players, the Prime Minister is also scheduled to deliver a public lecture at Sorbonne University on July 4,' he said.
In Rio de Janeiro, Anwar will attend the BRICS Summit on the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
'Malaysia's participation as a BRICS partner country and Asean chairman in 2025 will focus on international laws, the governance of artificial intelligence, and climate, among others,' Tunku Nashrul said. Malaysia officially attained BRICS partner country status on Jan 1.
Tunku Nashrul said the Prime Minister will be accompanied by several Cabinet ministers and a business delegation comprising corporate giants and innovative Malaysian enterprises.
'Some of these companies are already operating and have business interests in Italy, France or Brazil. Others are exploring new investment opportunities to expand their global networks,' he said.
On how the business delegation was chosen, Tunku Nashrul said the selection was managed by the Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry (Miti), following approval from the Prime Minister.
'This is an established practice through the involvement of the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida) and the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade), which act as facilitators for Malaysian and foreign companies to pursue investments or joint ventures, particularly through business roundtable meetings with industry leaders in the countries visited,' he said.
Among the companies that will be part of the delegation are Khazanah, Tenaga Nasional Bhd, Maybank, CIMB, AirAsia, Sunway and Weststar.
Tunku Nashrul said the decision to use a chartered flight instead of a government aircraft was made to ensure greater efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
'Given the tightly packed itinerary across three countries, the chartered flight enables the delegation to minimise long transit times and make the most of their time on the ground. It is also more economical than operating a full government aircraft for the duration of the trip.
'Travelling on the same flight will ensure punctual attendance of both government and business delegates at all scheduled meetings and engagement sessions,' he said.

SGX and HKEX in three charts

[SINGAPORE] Singapore's market is weathering a listing draught but the scene at a neighbouring rival bourse up north is quite a different picture. The Hong Kong stock exchange is on fire, with the southern Chinese territory fast on track to becoming the world's leading initial public offering (IPO) fundraising venue in 2025. Close to 100 companies could raise as much as HK$220 billion (S$35.7 billion) there, acording to PricewaterhouseCoopers. The Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEX) has also enjoyed a bumper crop of 149 IPO applications year to date as at May, almost double from the year-ago period. But on the Singapore Exchange (SGX), delistings continue to outpace IPOs. Six months into 2025, the Catalist debut of automotive group Vin's Holdings and mainboard listing of software services provider Info-Tech Systems, coupled with a stream of privatisations, takes the year's tally to two IPOs versus nine delistings. At least seven more firms are set to exit. BT in your inbox Start and end each day with the latest news stories and analyses delivered straight to your inbox. Sign Up Sign Up But while things looks dismal, revival could be on the horizon. For one, a review group formed by Singapore's central bank is proposing schemes to resuscitate the local stock market - including fund manager incentives, a shift towards a more disclosure-based regime and changes to simplify the listing process. The prospect of real estate investment trust (Reit) listings is also promising - with Japanese telecom giant NTT seeking to raise US$864 million in a Singapore IPO for a data centre Reit and French property asset manager Praemia Reim weighing a healthcare Reit. Beyond Reits, more fresh listings look to be on the way. Interior fit-out business Lum Chang Creations lodged its preliminary prospectus for the Catalist board on Jun 23 and design-and-build specialist Dezign Format Group followed suit one week later. Chinese corporates' heightened interest in Singapore listings could boost the local bourse as well. As a raging trade war spurs such firms to diversify away from the US, at least five from mainland China or Hong Kong are reportedly eyeing IPOs, dual listings, or share placements in Singapore over the next year or so. Although these developments bode well for Singapore's stock market, some market watchers do not expect the city state to close its listing gap with Hong Kong anytime soon - due to factors including its stricter listing requirements and relatively conservative investor base. Others think that Singapore's political stability, geopolitical neutrality as well as the international recognition and shorter time to market it offers compared to venues with longer IPO queues make it an appealing listing destination. While it remains to be seen if Singapore's equities market will get the turnaround it hopes for, The Business Times looks at how SGX and HKEX compares - in three charts.

AirAsia in talks with Airbus to convert some narrow-body orders to long-range model: sources

[KUALA LUMPUR] Budget airline AirAsia is in negotiations with Airbus to convert some existing narrow-body plane orders to the long-range A321XLR model as it sets a path out of restructuring, two industry sources said on Thursday (Jul 3). Tony Fernandes, CEO of AirAsia owner Capital A Group, told Reuters last month he was in talks to buy 50 to 70 of the latest Airbus model within one to three months, but signalled the first priority was to complete the group's financial reorganisation. A deal could come as early as this week when Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim visits Paris, the sources said. A separate source said that a deal was not guaranteed. Malaysia-based AirAsia is one of Asia's largest low-cost carriers and one of Airbus' largest customers, with more than 350 planes on order. It has been steadily restructuring its order book as it faced financial difficulties after a slump during Covid-19. Such a deal would not necessarily increase the overall size of AirAsia's outstanding orders with Airbus but would support the industry's longest-range narrow-body jet model, they said. Fernandes wants to expand AirAsia's global reach and has said Airbus' long-range models are an important part of that vision. Fernandes said this week that he was seeking a hub in the Gulf region. AirAsia is in talks with four locations, including in Saudi Arabia and Ras Al Khaimah, part of the United Arab Emirates, he told Dubai Eye radio. Bloomberg News on Thursday reported that AirAsia could place orders for narrow-body jets during the prime minister's visit, but that a deal was not guaranteed. Airbus and AirAsia did not immediately respond to requests for comment. REUTERS
