Jenkins entering season with heightened expectations for himself, FIU

Keyone Jenkins is quick to sling a football.
He's quick with a quip, too.
On Wednesday morning, following FIU's first practice of the fall, Jenkins was asked about the Panthers' new offensive coordinator, Nick Coleman.
'He's a little bit country, but he's a cool dude,' Jenkins began. 'Fall camp – 30 days and 30 nights. I'm going to be with him all day like he's my girl or something.'
While some in the media contingent were doubled over in laughter after hearing Jenkins say that, it's important to note that FIU's quarterback is more than just a jokester. The third-year junior has been a starter since the second game of his freshman season.
Beyond that, he has been named Conference USA's 2025 Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. That's a huge honor, especially since it was voted on by the league's coaches.
Jenkins was asked if he felt pressure to live up to preseason hype.
'Ain't no pressure,' Jenkins said. 'You only feel pressure when you don't know what you're doing — I'm quoting Peyton Manning.
'I appreciate C-USA for what they see in me. That's motivation for me. My main goal is to get a C USA championship and be the Offensive Player of the Year, and not just in the preseason.'
Winning the Conference USA title would be a first for FIU. The Panthers have endured six straight losing seasons, going 9-36 in the league during that span.
Coach Mike MacIntyre was dismissed following last season. He was at FIU three years, and the Panthers went 4-8 each season.
Following last season, Jenkins placed his name in the transfer portal, but new coach Willie Simmons convinced him to stay … even though it apparently required a trip to a fancy restaurant.
'The first order of business after I got hired was keeping our quarterback,' Simmons said. 'There was a pretty nice dinner that I had with [Jenkins] and his dad.
'I dug into my pockets with the steak his dad ordered, but it was well worth it.'
Added Jenkins when asked about the steakhouse: 'It was somewhere on the beach. I can't tell you the name. I probably can't pronounce it but … great food, and I appreciate [Simmons].'
The feeling is mutual.
Simmons said he appreciates the improvements Jenkins has made from one year to the next:
Freshman season: 58.4 completion percentage; 3.3 touchdown rate; 3.2 interception rate; 7.3 yards per attempt.
Sophomore season: 61.8 completion percentage; 7.2 touchdown rate; 2.6 interception rate; 8.4 yards per attempt.
'All his metrics improved,' Simmons said. 'His ceiling is even higher than he realizes.'
Jenkins said his immediate goal is to deepen his knowledge of the offensive system Coleman has been implementing.
'Spring was great,' Jenkins said. 'But it wasn't as great as I wanted it to be.'
That hunger to improve bodes well for FIU.
Jenkins is also continuing to grow as a leader. He's an upperclassman now, and he said of his teammates: 'Guys are falling in line. To be a great leader, you have to have followers.'
There's still a long way to go before FIU's season opener against visiting Bethune-Cookman on August 29.
But Simmons said he feels great about his quarterback.
'This offense will be built around [Jenkins'] skill set,' Simmons said. 'Everyone knows the value of a good quarterback.
'Being able to retain [Jenkins] and build around him was critical for our success. My biggest recruiting win in all my years was being able to keep Keyone.'
And that's no joke.

Three Longhorns earn spots on Walter Camp Player of the Year watch list

Walter Camp Player of the Year watch list includes three Longhorns With the start of the 2025 college football season less than a month away, three Longhorns stars have found themselves on a prestigious watch list. On Monday, Arch Manning, Anthony Hill Jr., and Colin Simmons were named to the Walter Camp National Player of the Year preseason watch list. The award is given annually to the national player of the year. While the Longhorns trio will face competition, they have each shown flashes of brilliance, starting with Manning. In 10 games last year, he showed why his future is bright in Austin. The New Orleans native completed 61 of 91 passes for 939 yards and nine touchdowns. His stellar play earned Manning the SEC's Co-Freshman of the Week on Sept. 16. While he thrived under center, the Longhorns got a boost from Simmons on defense. During his freshman campaign, Simmons led the team in sacks with nine. The talented edge also ranked second in tackles for a loss with 14. As Simmons made life difficult for offensive coordinators, he etched himself into the history books. He was rewarded for his stellar play with the Shaun Alexander National Freshman of the Year Award. Simmons is the only player in program history to take home the honors. On defense, Texas also got a boost from Hill. He led the Longhorns in total tackles with 103 and tackles for a loss with 16.5. In his second year in the Forty Acres, the Texas native was a model of consistency, appearing in all 16 games. As the talented linebacker was a human highlight reel, he added three double-digit tackling performances to his resume. Although the Longhorn trio is focused on winning a national title, they will be keeping a close eye on the award. The list will be narrowed to 10 semifinalists in early November. Then, a month later, the finalists will be revealed in early December. The winner will be announced on December 12th. Regardless of who wins the award, the Longhorns are in a good position to build on their success from last year. That is partly due to the trio of Manning, Hill, and Simmons, who are in a great position to do special things during the 2025 campaign.

Florida Panthers star Matthew Tkachuk will be the face of NHL 26

Matthew Tkachuk has been the face of the Florida Panthers for the past three years. He is becoming one of the faces of USA hockey, too, leading into the Winter Olympics in February. And now, he's the face of the NHL's annual video game. Tkachuk, the Panthers' star winger, will be the cover athlete for NHL 26, EA Sports unveiled on Monday. The full cover design for the game will be announced Wednesday on the EA Sports NHL YouTube channel. Tkachuk, who joined the Panthers via a blockbuster trade with the Calgary Flames ahead of the 2022-23 season, has helped turn the Panthers into a juggernaut. Florida has reached the Stanley Cup Final in all three of his seasons with the team and won it all each of the past two years. In that time, Tkachuk has logged 254 points (88 goals, 166 assists) in 211 regular-season games with the Panthers while adding another 69 points (25 goals, 44 assists) in 67 Stanley Cup playoffs games. He was tied for the team lead with 23 points during the team's run to a second consecutive Stanley Cup. Tkachuk also helped the United States win silver in the 4 Nations Face-Off in February and has already been named one of six players to be on Team USA for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy. Tkachuk is the second Panthers player to grace the cover of the video game's main cover. Goaltender John Vanbiesbrouck was on the cover of NHL 97. Meanwhile, Olli Jokinen was on the cover of the European version of NHL 2005. It's the second time in the past three years a South Florida athlete has been the main cover athlete for a league's video game. Jazz Chisholm Jr. was on the cover of 2023 edition of MLB The Show when he was with the Miami Marlins.

Florida Panthers' Matthew Tkachuk named 'NHL 26' cover athlete

Aug. 4 (UPI) -- Florida Panthers forward Matthew Tkachuk will be on the cover of NHL 26, EA Sports announced Monday. A full reveal for the video game will premier Wednesday. "He's loud," EA Sports wrote on social media. "He's relentless. He's a problem. Now he's the face of the game." Tkachuk, 27, joined the Panthers through a 2022 trade from the Calgary Flames. The nine-year veteran made the Stanley Cup Final in each of his three seasons with the franchise, including their back-to-back title-winning campaigns in 2023-24 and 2024-25. Tkachuk tied Carter Verhaeghe and Sam Reinhart for the Panthers' team lead in postseason points, with 23 over 23 games. He scored eight goals and chipped in 15 assists during the Panthers' 2024-25 playoff run. NHL 26 is expected to be released in September. The NHL 26 preview will air Wednesday on YouTube.
