Ex-Colombian Prez Álvaro Uribe sentenced to 12 years of house arrest

Bogotá, Aug 2 (UNI) Former Colombian President Álvaro Uribe was sentenced to 12 years of house arrest after being found guilty of procedural fraud and witness bribery. The 73-year-old former president had pleaded not guilty. His defence attorney previously announced that they would file an appeal, reports CNN. Judge Sandra Heredia of Bogotá's 44th Criminal Court announced the sentence on Friday, four days after she found the former president guilty of the crimes. Heredia had acquitted Uribe of another charge for alleged bribery of a prosecutor. Uribe, who governed Colombia from 2002 to 2010, is the country's first former president to be criminally convicted. The case began in 2012, when Uribe, of the now-opposition Centro Democrático party, accused Senator Iván Cepeda, of the ruling Historic Pact, of trying to link him to the creation of a paramilitary group. Cepeda has denied the accusations. The situation took a turn in 2018, when the Colombian Supreme Court decided to open an investigation against Uribe for alleged witness tampering. After years of investigations and legal appeals by Uribe's defence, in May 2024, the Colombian Prosecutor's Office formally charged him with three crimes: procedural fraud, bribery in criminal proceedings and bribery. The accusation led to a trial that lasted 67 days and concluded this week. Uribe maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings, a position supported by politicians such as former president Iván Duque and other opposition politicians. In contrast, figures close to the government celebrated the ruling, which they considered a sign of justice. UNI XC SS

House adjourned for 10 mins amid protests over coal-handling cess

Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar adjourned the House for 10 minutes on Friday after opposition MLAs rushed to the well in protest of state govt's failure to collect green cess on coal-handling from Jindal and Adani. The legislators vehemently declared that they did not want coal in Goa. Opposition leader Yuri Alemao alleged that the two companies handled double the amount of coal than the permissible limit, and that govt had failed to recover around Rs 4,000 crore from them. He also said that coal imports increased after the cessation of ore mining in 2012, and that even though everyone objected to coal-handling at the Mormugao port during subsequent public hearings, the activity was still recommended for environmental clearance (EC). Alemao further said that the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) had reduced coal-handling at the port by 25% based on a letter by former chief minister Manohar Parrikar, but it was reversed following Parrikar's death. He told the House that the environment department had written a letter calling for a decrease in coal-handling at the Mormugao port and that this letter was put in the public domain at a public hearing. He asked whether the letter was ultimately sent to New Delhi to be included in the coastal zone management plan. While chief minster Pramod Sawant said it was, Alemao claimed it was never sent. 'My charge is that the EC was illegally granted as state govt hid the letter and did not send it to Centre,' the opposition leader said. Sawant responded that all the documents placed at the public hearing were sent to Delhi. Alemao also accused govt of allowing illegalities at the Mormugao port pertaining to coal-handling, but Sawant insisted that govt was not allowing any illegalities there and that coal was handled according to the limit. Environment minister Aleixo Sequeira said the import and export of coal are monitored by the GSPCB, and agreed with the figures pointed out by Alemao. Sequeira said that the GSPCB had not given any permission to increase coal-handling at Mormugao port as there is no bypass road for its transportation. He promised that in the next assembly session, he would provide the correct coal-handling figures. Alemao pointed out that Sawant claimed coal was handled as per the EC limit, but that the environment minister contradicted the chief minister. 'Jindal and Adani are handling double the amount of coal compared to the EC limit,' Alemao said. 'Jindal has not paid green cess since 2013, which amounts to Rs 3,000-4,000 crore, and it needs to be recovered. When will it be recovered?' Sawant replied that govt had recovered green cess on coal-handling. His response didn't sit well with the opposition, prompting them to rush to the well of the House.>

Our ties with US have weathered many transitions and challenges: India on Trump's criticism

New Delhi, Aug 1 (UNI) India today appeared to brush aside US President Donald Trump's use of strong language against India, saying the partnership has weathered several transitions and challenges, and expressed confidence that the bilateral relationship will continue to progress. Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, answering a barrage of questions on President Trump's negative comments, especially terming India as a 'dead economy', said: 'India and the United States share a comprehensive global strategic partnership anchored in shared interests, democratic values, and robust people-to-people ties. 'This partnership has weathered several transitions and challenges. We remain focused on the substantive agenda that our two countries have committed to and are confident that the relationship will continue to move forward.' On Thursday, President Trump had said that India and Russia could 'take their dead economies down together', hours after announcing that he would levy 25% tariffs on Indian imports from Friday, August 1. Countering the US President's statement, Commerce and Industries Minister Piyush Goyal said yesterday that India is seen as an economic 'bright spot' in the world 'All things not good', Trump wrote on Truth Social, adding that India would be paying a tariff of 25% from August 1, plus a penalty for buying military hardware and energy from Russia. Trump had also said that the U.S. and India 'don't do a lot of trade'. In 2024, India and the U.S. conducted trade in goods and services worth $186 billion, with a surplus of $41 billion in India's favour The MEA spokesperson said they have taken note of Trump's announcement of a 25 percent tariff on Indian goods, adding that the government is studying and reviewing the move. He also chose not to respond to the U.S. President's taunt about Pakistan potentially selling oil to India. 'We have nothing to say,' the spokesperson said. India also stood by its decision to purchase oil from Russia, with the spokesperson saying that India's choices are guided by the prevailing global scenario and the best available deals in the market to secure the country's energy needs. "Our ties with any country stand on their own merit and should not be seen through the prism of a third country. As far as India-Russia relations are concerned, we have a steady and time-tested partnership," the spokesperson said. 'In securing our energy needs, we are guided by what is on offer in the markets and by the prevailing global circumstances,' he added. On India-US defence cooperation, Jaiswal highlighted the robust nature of India-U.S. defence ties, which he said have significantly deepened in recent years. "There is considerable potential for this partnership to expand further," he noted. 'We have a strong defence partnership with the U.S. which has been strengthening over the last several years. There is potential for this partnership to grow further under the India-U.S. COMPACT for the 21st century.' UNI RN
