Police intercept 30 guns being sent from Gauteng to Western Cape
On Monday night an intelligence driven operation involving the anti-kidnapping task team, crime intelligence, the Gauteng provincial investigating unit, Johannesburg K9 unit, Joburg metro police and private security led to the arrest of two suspects in Meyersdal.
Police spokesperson Brig Athlenda Mathe said t he arrest of the suspects, aged 34 and 45, came after several days of surveillance and information gathering across provinces "where suspects involved in the moving of unlicensed firearms were identified".
"As the suspects collected the firearms, the team moved in for a coordinated tactical takedown in Meyersdal."
Mathe said 30 9mm unlicensed firearms were found in their possession.
"Further investigation confirmed the weapons were destined for the Western Cape and the suspects intended to transport the unlicensed firearms themselves.
"The suspects have been linked to other cases in Gauteng and the Western Cape.
"They are in custody and are facing charges including illegal possession and trafficking of firearms.
"Investigations are ongoing to track down more members of the illegal firearm trafficking syndicate."

'Serial rapist' who found victims on dating site arrested
A suspect linked to 10 rape cases in Gauteng has been arrested. The suspect was arrested at Mentz village, under the Mankweng policing area in Limpopo, in a joint operation by police units early on Monday. Life sentence for security guard who raped minor at residential complex
A man who raped a child on the first day of work at a residential complex in Florida, Roodepoort, has been handed a life sentence. Mpho Antonio Lebona, 26, was arrested on the day of the rape of the 14-year-old girl in January 2021 because residents in the complex reacted quickly to the victim's report of the attack, said National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane. It was Lebona's first day of employment as a security officer at the complex. "He had been tasked with overseeing access to the complex's communal washing area. The victim, who resided at the complex, approached Lebona to unlock the washing area. The victim's parents were at work during the commission of the offence. The accused locked the door behind them and raped the victim, and inflicted a bite wound on her neck." Roodepoort regional court prosecutor Claude Payne presented victim impact statements from the girl and her mother which highlighted the trauma, particularly the loss of the victim's virginity. Citing the nature of the crime against a child, magistrate Thelma Simpson said life imprisonment was the only befitting sentence, reflecting the court's commitment to justice for such heinous acts. Court postpones hearing for mother accused of child drug abuse
A Johannesburg mother faces charges of child abuse after a shocking video of her four-year-old son smoking drugs went viral. The court case has been postponed for address verification, raising concerns about child safety and parental responsibility. The case against a woman accused of giving her four-year-old son a substance to smoke has been postponed for address verification. The woman and her co-accused, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the child, appeared in court on Monday, and according to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has been postponed to August 7. "The postponement is to allow for verification of the accused's alternative residential addresses, as the investigating officer reported that the provided addresses were inaccessible during a recent visit," NPA spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane explained. The case made headlines last week after a video of the incident went viral on social media. The video shows the child allegedly lighting a pipe with a substance in it, reportedly for his mother. "She is then seen allegedly encouraging him to smoke it himself, in the presence of the three co-accused. The accused have been charged with Child Abuse and Attempted Murder. The child has since been removed and placed in a place of safety," Mjonondwane stated. Meanwhile, Curt van Heerden, a Gauteng-based pastor who was instrumental in tracking down the family following the release of the video, said the boy has been housed in a place of safety.
