LynnMall attack inquest: Police had no option but to shoot Ahamed Samsudeen

The coronial inquest into LynnMall terrorist Ahamed Samsudeen has heard officers had no option but to shoot him during his attack at an Auckland supermarket four years ago.
Samsudeen was shot and killed by police after stabbing four women and one man with a kitchen knife at a Countdown supermarket in Auckland's New Lynn.
Two others were injured trying to stop him.
Inspector Derek Sarney told the inquest Samsudeen did not cooperate with officers trying to de-escalate the situation.
"The officers were unable to de-escalated the threat any further, therefore, they had to remain with lethal force being the option presented to Mr Samsudeen," he said.
Offenders must show they are listening to commands so officers feel the threat reducing, something Sarney said Samsudeen did not do.
"Therefore, any other option, other than the firearm, was not available to them without increasing significant risk to themselves or members of the public."
Sarney said police believed Samsudeen posed a risk of death or grievous bodily harm to the public as well as the officers present during the attack.
"Mr Samsudeen's actions were unpredictable, uncooperative, threatening by carriage and use of a large bladed weapon, and were goal driven to resist arrest by force," he said.
Closing statements for phase one of the inquest are expected this afternoon.

Aggravated Robbery, Ngāruawāhia
Waikato Police are investigating an aggravated robbery at a service station in Ngāruawāhia overnight. At around 12.55am on Friday, July 25 a vehicle arrived at the service station on Great South Rd. A group of four offenders exited the vehicle and smashed their way into the premises. A staff member was inside the store and activated the fog cannons before making themselves safe in the rear of the store. They were uninjured and are being offered support. Christchurch Police Seeking Information On Hit And Run
Police in Christchurch investigating a hit-and-run in the city this week are seeking information from the public. Emergency services were called about 9:05am on Wednesday 23 July to a crash between a car and a cyclist, at the intersection of Grahams Road and Westburn Terrace, in Burnside. The cyclist was transported to hospital in a serious condition. While the driver did stop at the scene initially, he left shortly afterwards, failing to stop to check on the injured cyclist. He was driving a white SUV, similar to a Subaru, and is described as Indian in appearance, between 40-50 years old, around 178cm tall and of large building, and with a tattoo on his forearm. Watch: NZ man sentenced for drunken assault during Perth-Auckland flight
A New Zealand man has been sentenced for drunkenly assaulting two airline crew on a flight from Perth to Auckland. His actions resulted in the plane being diverted to Melbourne. This week, the 23-year-old was sentenced by the County Court of Victoria to six months' imprisonment, to be released immediately on a two-year good behaviour bond. He was also ordered to pay the airline $10,824 (NZ$11,834) in compensation. Australian Federal Police were called to reports of an intoxicated and disruptive passenger on 23 October, 2024. The man refused to comply with requests from two crew members and assaulted both, causing minor injuries. Police said officers boarded the plane once it landed at Melbourne Aircraft and removed the passenger, who had been restrained at the back of the aircraft. He pleaded guilty on 17 April, 2025, to two counts of assaulting crew of an aircraft. Detective Superintendent Stephen Cook said airline staff deserved to feel safe in their workplace and not be subjected to violence and aggression from passengers . "Anti-social behaviour during a flight can pose a direct threat to the safety of the aircraft, and in this instance, also inconvenience passengers onboard," he said. "The AFP works closely with the airline industry to intervene if anyone's behaviour interferes with the safety of workers or the public in or around an airport, or on flights."
