R5 rifle recovered after robbery at north mall, perpetrators still at large
An R5 assault rifle has been recovered following a brazen cross-pavement robbery that took place at Wonderpark Mall in Akasia on July 21.
Police are however still on the hunt for the suspects involved in the crime.
Tshwane Flying Squad spokesperson Sergeant Alfred Legodi said the incident occurred at approximately 09:30.
Legodi said that while conducting routine patrols in the Akasia policing precinct, officers were alerted to the robbery and quickly made their way to the underground parking area of the mall.
On arrival, police encountered security personnel already at the scene and immediately initiated an investigation into the robbery.
'Law enforcement received further intelligence regarding a suspicious firearm believed to be stashed near Akasia flats, not far from the mall.
'Officers acted promptly on the tip-off and proceeded to the location. Upon arrival, they successfully recovered an R5 rifle, a high-powered military-grade firearm, believed to be linked to the robbery,' said Legodi.
Legodi added the weapon has since been booked in at Akasia SAPS, where a comprehensive investigation is now underway.
'All relevant law enforcement and forensic teams have been mobilised to gather further evidence and track down the suspects involved in the heist.'
Legodi urged members of the public to come forward with any information that may assist in identifying or locating the individuals responsible.

The August 2 operation, aimed at increasing police visibility and restoring order, focused on the Atteridgeville policing precinct and surrounding areas. 'The joint efforts of this team yielded significant results, with 356 suspects arrested for various criminal offences. The second phase of the operation, executed by uniformed officers, involved a roadblock within the precinct, supported by two operational teams deployed across the area. As a result, 34 undocumented foreign nationals were detained and are currently being processed by immigration authorities for court appearances and deportation, with one person being fined for employing illegal immigrants. In total, 1 240 individuals and 518 vehicles were searched, with three vehicles being verified to determine whether they were stolen. This resulted in the recovery of a motor vehicle that was reported stolen earlier at Pretoria Central SAPS. Police arrested 37 people for driving under the influence of alcohol. One vehicle was confiscated due to non-compliance with the Road Traffic Act and 60 Aarto infringement notices were issued, amounting to R30 000. Targeted patrols and searches were also carried out at 25 identified crime hotspots, further disrupting criminal activity and resulting in the arrest of nine people for public drinking. Two suspects were arrested for dealing and possession of drugs when 417 ziplock bags containing various drugs and an undisclosed amount of cash were found in their possession. Additionally, 32 liquor outlets were inspected for compliance, leading to the closure of 11 establishments due to their non-compliance. This resulted in the confiscation of 3460 litres of liquor and two gambling machines. The SAPS in Tshwane says it continues to maintain its zero-tolerance stance on crime through the continued execution of Operation Shanela across the metro. Police divers recover four bodies from dam near Mamelodi Four people, a mother and her three children, apparently drowned at Delfie Quarry Dam, in Pienaarspoort, Mamelodi, on Sunday. According to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Grant Giblin,he 51-year-old mother was allegedly performing a cleansing ritual on her daughter (36) and two sons, both in their 20s, when all four of them drowned. 'A seven-year-old girl witnessed the event from the river banks and ran home for help,' Giblin said. Upon arrival, Water Policing and Diving Services and Emergency Services found the bodies of the mother and daughter floating in the dam. Their bodies were recovered. Giblin said due to the depth of the dam, the divers returned early Monday morning and, after a 40-minute dive, managed to recover the bodies of the two sons. An inquest docket is currently under investigation by the Boschkop SAPS. Police urge vigilance as criminals steal keys from the elderly inside stores
Police in the north of Pretoria are advising elderly residents to remain alert and aware of their surroundings, following an increase in reports of theft of motor vehicles. According to police, this is happening at local shopping centres, targeting mainly vulnerable shoppers. Pretoria North police spokesperson, Sergeant Tumisang Moloto, said there has been an increase in car theft cases in recent weeks, with the elderly being targets around shopping centres. 'Criminals are now using more subtle and manipulative tactics to prey on elderly motorists, often stealing their car keys while they are still shopping or distracted inside grocery stores. 'The perpetrators are not targeting a specific shopping centre, but it's shopping centres around the Pretoria North CBD and Ninapark,' said Moloto. The local police have observed that offenders are not just breaking into vehicles in parking lots, but are deliberately targeting vulnerable individuals inside malls. Moloto said in some cases, suspects follow elderly shoppers, distract them, and discreetly snatch their keys from handbags or shopping trolleys. He said once the keys are stolen, the thieves easily locate and drive away with the vehicles without raising immediate suspicion. 'This is a new and worrying trend. The elderly are being specifically targeted because criminals perceive them as less likely to notice or resist during these planned thefts.' The police are urging the public to remain alert, avoid shopping alone if possible, and keep their car keys safe at all times. Shoppers are also advised to avoid talking to strangers who offer help or try to begin unnecessary conversations while inside shops or parking areas.
