Why New Zealand is introducing a new foreign tourist charge
Overseas visitors will be expected to pay between NZ$20 (£8.87) and $40 (£17.75) to visit sites such as Cathedral Cove / Te Whanganui-a-Hei, Tongariro Crossing, Milford Sound and Aoraki Mount Cook.
The plan, announced by Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Conservation Minister Tama Potaka, aims to create jobs and increase wages.
The revenue generated, estimated at up to $62m (£28m) annually, will be directly reinvested into the conservation estate.
New Zealand citizens will remain exempt from these fees, which are anticipated to be implemented from 2027.

Last year, around 3.31 million international tourists flocked to New Zealand, a significant increase of 357,000 compared to 2023. Lured in by its glow worm-filled caves, natural springs, incredible hikes and unbeatable coffee culture, the country's tourist boom has shed light on the strain tourism can have on nature. As a result, conservation minister Tama Potaka and prime minister Christopher Luxon have announced new measures to help protect the areas, as well as create more jobs and boost wages. The move will see tourists pay between NZ$20 (£8.87) and $40 (£17.75) to enter a handful of attractions that account for around 80 per cent of all visitors. It comes after a warning to Brit tourists planning all-inclusive holidays to Spain. "Tourists make a massive contribution to our economy, and no one wants that to change," Mr Potaka said. "But I have heard many times from friends visiting from overseas their shock that they can visit some of the most beautiful places in the world for free." The politician estimated the move will generate a whopping £28 million in revenue per year, which will be 'directly re-invested into those same areas'. However, New Zealanders will be exempt from the tourist charge. "It's our collective inheritance and Kiwis shouldn't have to pay to see it," the PM added, arguing the country's concessions regime is 'totally broken'. "If we're serious about keeping Kiwis at home, creating jobs, and increasing wages for all New Zealanders, we can't afford to keep saying no to every opportunity that comes our way." The first locations to introduce the charges will be Piopiotahi (Milford Sound), a stunning fjord located in the southwest of the south island. Sandwiched within Fiordland National Park, the reserve is highly popular with tourists wanting to explore the dolphin-filled waters and majestic waterfalls on a boat tour. It was also one of the many filming locations for the Lord of the Rings. The iconic Te Whanganui-a-Hei (Cathedral Cove) will also be included in the shake-up. This stunning marine reserve is arguably the country's most famous patch of sand, often pictured by its natural archway that perfectly frames the beach. Other sites slated to introduce tourist charges include Tongariro Crossing in the eponymously-named national park and the famous Aoraki Mount Cook - New Zealand's highest mountain. It is reported that the fees won't be introduced until 2027. Much closer to home, sunbed wars see Brits forced to queue for 'over an hour' just to get to the pool.

America's hottest stock in 2025 is barely on anyone's radar
The best-performing stock this year isn't one of the tech giants that dominate headlines. While the likes of Meta, Alphabet, and Amazon have delivered solid gains, they've all been outshone by AI-powered software and data firm Palantir. Palantir's stock has surged 565 percent over the past year — more than doubling in 2025 alone — making it the top performer on the S&P 500. On Monday, the company reported quarterly revenue of $1 billion for the first time, beating Wall Street expectations and sending the stock up another four percent. Best known for building software used by the military, intelligence agencies, and law enforcement, Palantir has seen a sharp uptick in business under President Trump's second term. Since Trump began his second term Palantir has picked up at least $300 million of new business. Many of its new contracts come from the federal government including works for the Federal Aviation Administration, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and Fannie Mae, according to federal records. With Trump's administration championing artificial intelligence, cost-cutting, and private-sector partnerships, Palantir's federal business boom shows no signs of slowing. Just last week Palantir gained its biggest contract yet, an agreement to consolidate all of the military's software use over the next decade at a cost of up to $10 billion. Further to this the government has agreed to pump $795 million more into the military's core artificial intelligence software program that was built by Palantir. The Pentagon wants to expand the Maven Smart System to be used by all US forces across the globe. 'They were positioned in the right way at the right time, and they had already built the technology that had the capability to do what the administration is trying to do,' Matt Pearl, director of the Strategic Technologies Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) told the Washington Post. The firm's government work picked up under Elon Musk's reign at DOGE where he trumpeted a technology-forward crusade against government waste and inefficiency. Palantir was founded by Peter Thiel, a mentor to JD Vance, and current CEO Alex Karp in the aftermath of 9/11 to help arm the state with the latest technology. Since 2008 the company has been awarded nearly $3 billion in federal funds from over 300 contracts from both Republican and Democratic administrations. Among its most high-profile uses was when its software helped orchestrate the 2011 raid that killed Osama bin Laden. Palantir was founded in the aftermath of 9/11 to help arm the state with the latest technology 'Palantir is an exceptional American company,' a senior State Department official told the Post. The official said the department was 'proud to partner with them to modernize how we carry out America's diplomacy.' 'We are proud to support the U.S. government, especially our warfighters, and our growth reflects growing government AI adoption,' a spokesperson for Palantir told the publication. Other technology stocks including Meta and Microsoft are also having a strong year, helping to push the S&P 500 up to recent record highs. In their second quarter earnings released last week Meta beat Wall Street expectations with $47.52 billion in revenue, while Microsoft brought in $76.44 billion, up 18 percent from a year ago.

Skyrora win first space launch licence
The Scottish company Skyrora has announced big news today as they are awarded the first vertical space launch licence in the UK. The permission from the UK Civil Aviation Authority allows the company which has an office on Princes Street to launch from the SaxaVord Spaceport up to 16 times. The approval process examined key matters such as safety and environmental mitigations, and the ongoing launches will be subject to monitoring by the space regulator. The company must also share its data with the UK Government as part of the licensing arrangement. Rob Bishton, CEO of the UK Civil Aviation Authority, said: 'Granting a home-grown company, Skyrora its launch licence is a major milestone for our space sector and our nation. 'Our work as the UK's space regulator is enabling the burgeoning launch industry to safely grow, bringing new jobs and investment with it.' Volodymyr Levykin, CEO Skyrora said: 'Becoming the first UK company to receive its vertical launch operator licence is a testament to the hard work and dedication of everyone at Skyrora. It is essential that the UK has sovereign launch capabilities. 'Skyrora is proud to be leading efforts that enable launch activity from the UK and we look forward to achieving a reliable commercial launch programme that benefits us all.' Scottish Secretary Ian Murray, said: 'This launch licence isn't just one giant leap for Skyrora – it's a massive boost to the whole of Scotland and the wider UK's space sector. Becoming the first British company to manufacture and send a rocket into space from the UK will be a hugely significant moment. 'It's an exciting time for the Scottish space sector – an important industry which is playing a vital role in our Plan for Change, helping economic growth and employing thousands of people in good quality jobs across the country. Glasgow in particular is a city and region with a huge role to play in the space race, with innovation in this field the focus of its £160 million UK Government funded Investment Zone status.
