Gabriel Magalhaes sends message to Viktor Gyokeres over Arsenal transfer
Gabriel Magalhaes admitted that Viktor Gyokeres is a 'great' player as the Sporting Lisbon striker inches closer to his move to Arsenal. The Gunners have identified the Sweden international as their leading transfer target up front and have made huge progress in getting a deal over the line in recent weeks. Agreeing personal terms has not been a problem with Gyokeres eager to join Mikel Arteta's side and play in the Champions League next season. But Arsenal are still to agree a fee with Sporting who are standing firm on add-on payments, refusing to be bullied into any deal. Although the final terms are still expected to be ironed out in the coming days and weeks, Gabriel was unwilling to divulge much about his potential new signing teammate. But it's clear the Brazilian was impressed with what he saw when the two came up against each other in the Champions League last season. 'We all know he is a great player, but he is a Sporting player not an Arsenal player,' Gabriel said. 'Playing against him last year was a challenge. He is great and had a great season.' Arsenal have already enjoyed an active start to the summer window, with deals for Noni Madueke, Martin Zubimendi, Christian Norgaard, and Kepa Arrizabalaga all wrapped up. Gyokeres and defender Cristhian Mosquera are expected to be the next two signings through the door, with Gabriel pleased by the quality that has been added to their squad. 'I think the players that came will help us out a lot,' he said. 'The club is doing what is best for the players and the manager. 'They are definitely doing their best to bring the best players that can help us, but we have to focus on what we can do out on the pitch. 'The players that are here are doing that. We are strong and we are getting stronger with these new players. 'Definitely, it excites me. We want to have the best players. To be in the dispute for titles, you have to have the best players.' More Trending Earlier in the summer, Gabriel urged Arsenal to pursue a deal for Rodrygo, who has been linked with the Gunners having fallen out of favour at Real Madrid. Asked if he knows whether Arsenal will sign Rodrygo, the centre-back told the Podpah Podcast: 'I don't. No, I don't, not really. 'But I'd like obviously. Rodrygo is a phenomenon, for me. He's not at Arsenal… If it depended on me, I've told people already, he's a phenomenon. ''His name is mentioned a lot. If it was up to me, of course [I would sign him].' Gabriel gives honest verdict on Arsenal target Viktor Gyokeres after mimicking his celebration – and reveals why 'this season will be different' for the Gunners
Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes has delivered his verdict on the club's top target and Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres. Mail Sport understands that the clubs are close to agreeing a deal worth an initial £55million, with a further £7.4m in add-ons, while Gyokeres has agreed a five-year contract. Arsenal had hoped to seal the deal before they flew out to their pre-season tour of Asia on Saturday, but the two sides remain at odds over bonus payments and the schedule of instalments, with Sporting pushing for more of the fee up front. Gabriel and co came up against Gyokeres in the group phase of the Champions League last season, with the Brazilian mimicking the Swede's celebration after scoring. The 27-year-old has now heaped praise on Gyokeres, who scored 54 in 52 games for Sporting last season. He told BBC Sport: 'We all know he is a great player, but he is a Sporting player not an Arsenal player. 'Playing against him last year was a challenge. He is great and had a great season. About the celebration, it is something I can't talk about right now.' Arsenal have strengthened this summer with the signings of Martin Zubimendi, Christian Norgaard, Noni Madueke and Kepa Arrizabalaga. Asked about the Gunners' transfer business so far, Gabriel added: 'I think the players that came will help us out a lot. 'The club is doing what is best for the players and the manager. They are definitely doing their best to bring the best players that can help us, but we have to focus on what we can do out on the pitch. 'The players that are here are doing that. We are strong and we are getting stronger with these new players. 'Definitely, it excites me. We want to have the best players. To be in the dispute for titles, you have to have the best players.' Arsenal finished third in the Premier League for a third concehstive season last term - but Gabriel believes they will go over the line in the upcoming 2025-26 campaign. 'I've been at the club for five years now and I've seen how much the club has grown,' he said. 'I am here to win big titles and I do believe that this season will be different. We have let a couple of titles slip through our fingers recently. 'We almost won but I think this year, things will be different. I have a lot of faith in that.' Arsenal will take on AC Milan on July 23 and Newcastle on July 27 as part of the Singapore Festival of Football.

Arteta was left to rue key injuries that hampered Arsenal's title charge last campaign with the likes of Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard, Ben White, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus suffering long-term lay-offs at crucial times. Gabriel was also ruled out for the remainder of the season in April, requiring hamstring surgery – with attackers Saka and Havertz undergoing the same procedure.
