Nation in flames: What sparked Kenya's deadly protests?

The death of blogger Albert Omondi Ojwang in police custody on 8 June ignited flames of nationwide protests on 25 June.
A video claimed that Deputy Inspector-General of Police Eliud Lagat was planning an extortion syndicate, which led to Ojwang's concern.
In contrast to the initial police claim that he committed suicide, his body showed signs of severe torture.
Police claims that Ojwang had fatally struck his skull against a wall were refuted by government pathologist Dr Bernard Midia, who flatly denied the possibility of self-harm.
The autopsy revealed significant soft tissue lesions, cervical compression, and blunt force damage to the skull, all of which were consistent with an attack rather than self-harm.
Before becoming well-known as a digital activist on TikTok and X, 31-year-old Albert Omondi Ojwang taught Kiswahili and religious studies at Moi Boys High School in Voi, Taita Taveta County, southern Kenya.
He regularly published tapes detailing alleged illegal arrests and bribery by traffic cops.
On 6 June 2025, he identified high-ranking officials involved in 'mafia-style' police corruption in a livestream.
Ojwang openly accused Officer James Mukhwana, Officer Commanding Station Samson Talaam, and Deputy Inspector-General Eliud Lagat of running a police extortion ring.
Later that night, authorities took him into custody without a warrant or public explanation.
Social media platforms, particularly TikTok and X (formerly Twitter), helped #JusticeForOjwang garner national attention and intensify the protests.
As of 26 June, Amnesty International (AI) Kenya reported that gunshot wounds had caused hundreds of injuries and 16 fatalities.
The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR), using eyewitness reports, mortuary statistics, and hospital records, confirmed it.
Many stores, particularly in Nairobi and Mombasa, suffered looting, raging flames, or vandalism during rallies.
Traders also reported property damages amounting to millions of Kenyan shillings.
According to Reuters, at least ten buildings in Nairobi's central business district were on fire.
Officer Commanding Station (OCS) Samson Talaam, along with two additional police officers and three individuals, faced charges of murder.
Consequently, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Renson M. Ingonga indicted them in connection with Ojwang's death on 23 June 2025.
Furthermore, the interior cabinet secretary, Kipchumba Murkomen, called the protesters 'terrorism disguised as dissent'.
Many Western embassies and the United Nations (UN) expressed deep concern over the deaths.
They urged the Kenyan government to ensure accountability and protect human rights amid the crisis.

Car crash claims three, forces temporary N2 closure at Amatikulu

A major crash between a car and tanker on the N2 near the Amatikulu River claimed the lives of three women this morning. Two men were also injured in the accident, while the highway was closed in both directions to allow for safe clean-up of the tanker, which was carrying liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) The accident happened at around 11am, killing three women aged 15 to 65 and leaving one man trapped. Members of IPSS Search and Rescue and the Mandeni Fire Department were able to free the man and take him to hospital, alongside another man who was not as seriously injured. Teams worked under immense pressure once they discovered the tanker's cargo. 'The area was immediately declared unsafe due to the risk posed by the LPG tanker,' said IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson, Samantha Meyrick. 'Only essential personnel remained at the scene, and the N2 was closed.' The highway has remained closed since, with 6.45pm this evening (June 28) being reported as the latest estimate for reopening. Elderly man hacked in face during brutal Pretoria smallholding attack

An elderly man was hacked in the face with a panga during a brutal smallholding attack in Kameeldrift East in the early hours of Saturday morning, Pretoria Rekord reports. At around 02:00, a group of between three and six armed suspects stormed a smallholding on Plot 401, Karee Street in Pumulani, where an elderly couple resides. The attackers broke into the main house and began looting, assaulting the elderly man with a panga before fleeing with multiple stolen goods, including television sets. The victim was rushed to hospital with serious facial injuries. The suspects then targeted a second house on the property, where a woman was asleep alone. She was held at gunpoint, a shot was fired inside the home (believed to be a warning), and her walking aid was taken to prevent her from escaping. She is receiving trauma counselling. A gold Toyota Urban Cruiser was stolen, and a spent cartridge and matching bullet casing were recovered in the room. National police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said the police are investigating a case of attempted murder and house robbery after a family was attacked by unknown suspects in their home in Karee Weg, Kameeldrift, this morning. 'According to information received, a husband and wife were sleeping when they were woken by a bang on the door. About five unknown men entered the house and the husband was struck with a sharp object on the face.' She furthermore added that the suspects fled the scene with the victim's Toyota Cruiser and some household items. Police request anyone who may have information that can assist in arresting the suspects to contact their nearest police station or the Crime Stop Line at 08600 10111. Police investigations continue. This is the third violent attack on rural residents in the Pretoria region in just over a week. Missing Mbombela child (6) found raped and murdered

A six-year-old girl from Mbombela, Mpumalanga, who was reported missing has been found dead and allegedly raped. Her body was discovered in a graveyard yesterday, Mpumalanga News reports. According to Mpumalanga police spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli, the child was last seen on Monday evening. 'It is said that her father left her and her four-year-old sister at their home in Mataffin at about 20:40 to buy items from a nearby tuck-shop. He reportedly instructed the children to lock the shack for safety. When he returned, he found the door unlocked. The younger child was alone inside, and her sister was missing,' said Mdhluli. He asked the younger girl where her sister was, but she said she did not know. A search was launched with the help of neighbours, but she was not found. The search continued the next day without success. The matter was reported to the police in Nelspruit, and a missing person's file was opened. Various police units were deployed to assist, but the girl remained missing. 'On the evening of June 27, police and paramedics received information about a child's body discovered in the bushes. On arrival, the child was declared dead. Preliminary investigations suggest she was raped before she was killed,' said Mdhluli. No arrests have been made. Police urge anyone with information that could assist in identifying the suspect(s) to contact the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111 or to use the My SAPS App. Breaking news at your fingertips… Follow Caxton Network News on Facebook and join our WhatsApp channel.
