El Gouna Gets Its First Korean Street Food Spot With Garu's

El Gouna's food scene is expanding its palate with the arrival of Garu's, the town's first-ever Korean street food restaurant. From bao buns to rice bowls and crunchy banchan, the new spot offers playful, casual dishes that have been missing from the beach town's limited Asian offerings.
Founder Omar Khattab, a Maadi resident, said the idea came naturally: 'Being a Maadi, I've always been surrounded by Korean restaurants and culture, so I thought why not bring that to El Gouna?" he tells SceneEats.
He saw a clear gap in the local market and acted on it.
'The timing felt right,' Kattab added. 'Asian food has really been swiping the market—mochi, boba, bao buns—so I think now is the time for Asian food culture to shine.' He also noted a wave of creativity in Egypt's dining scene, saying, 'There've been so many pioneers lately in the food scene, and it's truly wonderful to see how innovative we've become.'
While sushi and poke have long defined the town's interpretation of Asian cuisine, Garu's introduces Korean comfort food to a more laid-back, street-inspired setting.

Global tour for Korean ‘K-Comics' launches in Cairo with ‘Hellbound' exhibition
A global exhibition showcasing Korean webtoons, K-Comics World, has opened in Egypt, marking the first stop of an international tour designed to celebrate the cultural impact of the digital comic format. Held throughout July at the Korean Cultural Center in Cairo, the exhibition spotlights the hit webtoon , which was co-created by writer Choi Gyu-seok and director Yeon Sang-ho, and later adapted into a globally successful Netflix original series. Choi attended the opening ceremony and met with local audiences, sharing insights into the story's creative themes of human belief, fear, and justice amid supernatural judgment. Webtoons, Korea's original digital comic format, are known for their vertical scroll structure, cinematic visuals, and gripping narratives. The exhibition offers visitors a comprehensive introduction to the phenomenon, featuring selected scenes from , interactive displays, a photo zone, a stamp rally, and other content. The exhibition in Egypt is the first of five planned global stops, with upcoming editions scheduled for Canada, China, Hungary, and Japan later this year. Its launch in Cairo highlights the expanding global reach of Hallyu, or the Korean Wave, and Korea's growing cultural exchange with Egypt. As part of the exhibition's programme, the cultural centre also hosted a special workshop with Choi, who discussed the production process of , his creative philosophy, and the current state of the Korean webtoon industry. The K-Comics World exhibition is open to the public from 1 July to 31 July 2025, daily from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, at the Korean Cultural Center in the Dokki district of Cairo.

Egyptian student wins Quiz on Korea during Egypt-Korea diplomatic ties celebrations - City Lights - Life & Style
Amid the Egypt-Korea celebrations of 30-year diplomatic relations and the 20th anniversary of Ain Shams University's Korean Language and Literature Department, Rawan Hamed, a third-year university student, won Egypt's preliminary contest 'Quiz on Korea,' earning a spot in September's global finals. The embassy of South Korea in Egypt hosted the 2025 Quiz on Korea event at Ain Shams University on 29 June, in celebration of the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between South Korea and Egypt and the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Korean Language and Literature Department at Ain Shams University. The Quiz on Korea was held in collaboration with the Faculty of Al-Alsun, Ain Shams University. The event is a global quiz competition co-hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Korea and the Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) to raise international interest in Korea. During the contest, participants answer questions covering a wide range of topics, including Korean history, culture, language, and traditions. Contestants had registered in advance through an online application process. The winner of the competition will be invited to Korea as an Egyptian representative to compete in the global final round in September. The grand finale will be broadcast as a KBS special programme on 5 October. The Egypt preliminary consisted of three rounds: OX (true/false), multiple choice, and short-answer questions. At the end of the contest, Hamed emerged as the champion and will represent Egypt in the final round in Korea. Participants at the 2025 Quiz on the Korea global quiz competition. Spectators expressed their admiration for the participants' passion and knowledge of Korea, noting that the event inspired them to learn more about Korean culture and history. 'The cultural and people-to-people exchanges serve as vital bridges of understanding between the two peoples,' he emphasized. He also expressed his gratitude to all participants and attendees for their enthusiasm and contributions to deepening bilateral cultural exchange. The event also featured celebratory performances by Ain Shams University's student Samulnori club and choir, adding a festive atmosphere to the occasion. In addition, a special Korea-Egypt quiz show was held for the audience, offering an opportunity to deepen their understanding of Korea and the various activities of the Korean embassy. 'Our two nations share strong ties, reflected in the Korean department where students act as cultural ambassadors. The Quiz on Korea is not only a test of knowledge, but also a celebration of our shared passion for Korean culture and cross-cultural connection,' Dean of the Faculty of Al-Alsun Prof. Salwa Rashad stated in her opening remarks.
