Ashes 2025-26 Tickets Surge Amid India-England Test Series Drama
Last Updated: Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg says the India vs England Test series will boost Ashes 2025-26 ticket sales. Pre-sale tickets have already doubled the Border-Gavaskar series. Cricket Australia chief executive Todd Greenberg believes the intense nature of the ongoing Test series between India and England will significantly boost the appeal of match-day tickets for the upcoming Ashes. The Ashes 2025-26 series between Australia and England is set to commence in November, and Greenberg aims to surpass the 837,879 spectators who attended the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. 'It's great, isn't it? It's great cricket (India vs England series for Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy) to watch as a fan," Greenberg told the Sydney Morning Herald. The Border-Gavaskar Trophy was the most attended Test series in Australian history outside of the Ashes, with a record attendance of 946,750, set during the 1936-37 Ashes when Sir Donald Bradman was at his peak. 'Everyone will have their opinion when our English friends arrive, I'm sure, and we're looking forward to that very much. I love the way they're playing their cricket and can't wait to see them test themselves on our shores," he added. The current series between India and England has featured several heated moments between players from both sides, and head coach Gautam Gambhir's disagreement with Oval curator Lee Fortis has added to the excitement. 'It's great cricket to watch leading into them coming here on this Ashes trip. It will sell more tickets for us. We like to think that's talkability," he said. According to Cricket Australia's estimates, opening day tickets for the five Ashes Tests in Perth, Brisbane, Adelaide, Melbourne, and Sydney have sold out. Additionally, ticket allocations for the first, second, and third days at the Gabba, Adelaide Oval, and SCG have also been exhausted. What Is The Ashes? The Ashes is cricket's oldest rivalry, pitting England and Australia in a biennial Test series. Its legend began in 1882, when Australia defeated England at The Oval and a mock obituary proclaimed English cricket 'dead," with 'the ashes taken to Australia." England's captain Ivo Bligh vowed to 'regain those ashes," and after a 2–1 series win in 1882–83 received a tiny urn—reputedly containing the charred bail of a cricket stump. This urn, now a fragile museum piece at Lord's, inspired replicas: since 1998–99, winning teams lift a Waterford Crystal trophy modelled on the original. Across 73 series to July 2023, Australia has claimed 34 victories (retaining six via draws) and England 32 (retaining once), usually over five Tests. Epic chapters include England's controversial 1932–33 'Bodyline" tactics, Australia's post-1989 dominance, and England's dramatic 2005 triumph. Held alternately at iconic venues—from Lord's and The Oval to the MCG and SCG—the Ashes remain the pinnacle of Test cricket drama. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
