Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne viral infection, primarily spread by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which is active during the day. It can cause a range of symptoms, from mild to severe, and in some cases, can be fatal, especially those with compromised immunity.

Why is dengue dangerous
Dengue is a viral infection spread by Aedes mosquitoes. It causes high fever, severe headaches, joint and muscle pain, and sometimes a dangerous drop in blood platelets.
In severe cases, dengue can lead to bleeding, organ failure, and even death. Children and the elderly are most at risk.
Challenges in making a vaccine
For years now, scientists have tried to develop a safe and effective dengue vaccine. The challenge however, is that there are four different types of dengue viruses, and a common vaccine must protect against all of them. Some vaccines developed in other countries have shown mixed results, but are not widely used.

India's home grown vaccine
India's first dengue vaccine is being developed by Serum Institute of India (SII). The vaccine, called 'TetraVax-DV,' is designed to protect against all four types of dengue viruses. Like other vaccines, it uses a weakened form of the virus to train the body's immune system to fight dengue. Since it is not a live virus per se, it does not cause the ailment itself.

What are Phase 3 Trials?
Before a vaccine can be approved for public use, it must go through several stages of testing:
Phase 1: Small group of healthy volunteers to test safety

Phase 3: Thousands of volunteers to test how well the vaccine works in a larger group
Hence, Phase 3 is the most important stage.
It shows if the vaccine can actually prevent dengue in the community as a whole.
Where does India stand
The phase 3 trial for India's dengue vaccine began in 2023. It is being conducted at more than 20 sites across the country, including both urban and rural areas. The trial aims to enrol over 10,000 volunteers, including children and adults from different backgrounds. As of now, enrollment is almost complete, and early results show good results.
Next steps
Monitoring: Volunteers will be monitored for any side effects and for protection against dengue.
Data Analysis: Scientists will study the data to see how well the vaccine works.
Approval: If the results are good, the vaccine could be approved by Indian health authorities within a year.
Why is the vaccine important

(HT File) Dr Balbir was leading an awareness drive under the state-level campaign 'Har Shukarvar Dengue Te Vaar' in Barmajra village, near Mohali, where he conducted door-to-door visits to educate residents about preventive measures against fever and the importance of destroying mosquito breeding grounds. Dr Balbir emphasised that the Aedes mosquito, which spreads dengue, breeds in clean stagnant water, and that draining such water once a week can effectively halt its lifecycle. He also urged residents to regularly clean and empty water containers such as coolers, refrigerator trays, and flowerpots, every Friday, to prevent mosquito breeding. 'If every household empties stagnant clean water once a week, we can prevent the spread of dengue not just in our homes, but across our communities,' he said. The minister explained that Village Health Committees, which include panchayat members, schoolteachers, anganwadi workers, and ASHA workers, are instrumental in spreading awareness. He also shared that he personally visits different villages every Friday to motivate people to participate in the campaign. Before presiding over a meeting with the Village Health Committee at Government School Barmajra, Dr Balbir launched the state-level campaign, 'Har Shukarvar, Village Health Committees Karangein Dengue Te Vaar', and released awareness posters for public dissemination. During an interaction with school students, Dr Balbir stressed the importance of personal hygiene and nutrition. He also advised students to wash their hands before eating, maintain dental and eye hygiene, and eat nutritious food. He also directed school staff to remain alert to students' health, encouraging them to inform health teams during routine check-ups if any child shows symptoms of illness.

Kolkata: Jadavpur University has received a significantly lower number of UG applications for its arts and science subjects compared to that last year. The JU English department, which has been topping the list of arts subjects for the highest number of applications in recent times, received 1,756 forms this year, 700 fewer than 2,456 last year. Among science subjects, physics and chemistry usually invite more applications than others though last year, mathematics had topped the list with 1,835 applications, possibly because there was no entrance test. But this year, the number of forms for the maths department has come to 954 so far. While arts department's applications ended at Friday midnight (June 3), that for science will end at Saturday midnight (June 4). JU opened its admission portal for UG arts and science courses on June 20 with a 7% reservation for OBC, following the Calcutta High Court's order of May 2024. The university was to start the process on May 19 but had put it hold over OBC-reservation disputes. The next date of inviting applications was set for June 18, but the university again pushed it back after the HC stayed the gazette notification on OBC till July 3. Another reason could be that students nowadays prefer professional courses rather than spend four years for a traditional undergraduate degree, according to the NEP curriculum," she said. The report found that more than 40% of E. coli and Klebsiella bacteria — two major antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) pathogens often responsible for serious infections — are now resistant to carbapenems, a high-end antibiotic typically used when all others fail. A senior state health department official told TOI that Gujarat is among the few Indian states with a dedicated AMR surveillance network. "All steps — from identifying antimicrobial resistance to specific antibiotics to reporting isolates — are standardized," the official said. The findings show that the majority of AMR isolates were from urine samples (42%), followed by pus aspirates (31%). About 62% of the isolates came from hospitalized patients, and 16% from patients in intensive care units (ICUs). Sources said that AMR organisms have been rising steadily — a trend also highlighted in Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) reports. "In recent years, gram-negative bacteria have shown increased resistance to several commonly used antibiotics. Some bacteria isolated from blood cultures also showed resistance, suggesting that if the correct antibiotics are not administered in time, it can lead to septicaemia — a potentially life-threatening bloodstream infection," said a microbiologist.
