Luxury handbag conman admits swindling thousands

BBC News24-06-2025
A "charismatic and persuasive" conman who persuaded people to invest thousands of pounds to buy and sell luxury handbags has pleaded guilty to fraud.Jack Watkin, 26, gained his victims' trust by putting forward an "outward facade of a glamorous and luxurious lifestyle" but left them out of pocket, Chester Crown Court heard.A trial had begun on Monday but Watkin, of Alderley Edge, Cheshire, earlier pleaded guilty to six counts of fraud and will be sentenced on 3 September. The conman, who was in Channel 4 documentary Rich Kids Of Instagram in 2016, spent the money he swindled in London's Harrods store and stays in the capital's five-star Dorchester hotel, according to police.
Opening the trial, Matthew Kerruish-Jones, prosecuting, said: "The defendant put forward the outward facade of a glamorous and luxurious lifestyle."This, it seems, engendered trust and led a number of individuals to loan him large sums of money on the promise of either a financial return or luxury items. Neither of which materialised."
He said complainants would be left "out of pocket for large sums of money".He added: "The defendant would make excuses and avoid the complainants, all the while spending large sums of money on maintaining his seemingly lavish lifestyle."Watkin had defrauded business and individuals to the value of over £200,000, Cheshire Police said. The jury was told that the sought-after Hermes handbags cannot be purchased over the counter and any prospective customers have to be invited to buy one, making it a lucrative investment as the resale value can be much higher than the original price.
Watkin told his victims he had the contacts that could give them access to the handbags and that they could split the profits made on resale. They then handed over their money in good faith but when his victims questioned the lack of any bag or money he would make excuses. He duped one woman into handing over thousands thinking she was investing in the the luxury handbag when she was in fact paying his bills at the Dorchester. She, like the others, never received the handbags or their share in the profits of their resale.Watkin, who was remanded in custody, was also convicted earlier this year of nine offences related to indecent images.
'Created a ruse'
Speaking after the hearing, Det Cons Gareth Yates said: "Jack Watkin is a male who has built a lifestyle on social media, on Instagram, and that lifestyle is one of exuberance."So if anyone was to look at that profile, you would see fancy hotels, luxury cars, designer clothing, and he created a following, and that following allowed him to create a ruse to be the fraudster we now know, and convicted fraudster."Senior crown prosecutor Laura Atherton said: "Some of these frauds span several years."Clearly, to be able to convince an individual for that length of time that you are going to repay money and you are going to provide goods, you have to be an incredibly charismatic and persuasive person to keep that up."It's just got to the stage where things had ran on for so long that complainants have then come forward when they come to the realisation, as it's the crown's case, that their goods or their money were never going to materialise."

140 job factory proposal in North Wales submitted to planners

Proposals are in for a major new factory in North Wales that would create 140 jobs. Knauf Insulation is behind the £170m plans for a manufacturing unit at Shotton, Deeside, which would be its second site in the region. It plans to take in 120,000 tonnes of raw materials per year – basalt, slag and recycled rock wool insulation and, using an electric melting furnace, turn that into 100,000 tonnes of rock mineral wool (RMW) insulation. This will then be used in housing and industrial insulation. Knauf has submitted a scoping opinion request to Flintshire council ahead of an Environmental Impact Assessment. Sign up for the North Wales Live newsletter sent twice daily to your inbox The report said: 'The raw materials and recycled materials will be delivered to the site via heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) and stored in designated areas before being milled and reduced in size and combined in specific proportions within the batch plant before being processed and melted. An electric melting furnace will be used to melt the batch and produce molten rock minerals known as 'melt'. The melt is then spun into fibres which are then formed, cured and cooled to produce various RMW insulation forms. 'The RMW is then cut and packaged to meet customer and product requirements.' The new site would include two 70 metre chimney stacks and a third smaller emergency stack. As well as direct jobs on site Knauf has estimated the site will generate around 400 jobs in the wider UK supply chain and generate hundreds of jobs during the construction phase. The company said it will work proactively to provide local employment opportunities and to enable access to training where possible. Neil Hargreaves, managing director of Knauf Insulation Northern Europe, said: 'Knauf Group has a proud history of manufacturing in Wales and this project aligns with the Welsh and UK Government's commitment to sustainability and the industrial vision for North Wales and Deeside. Using UK-first SAF technology, the new factory will produce non-combustible, low embodied carbon, recyclable rock mineral wool insulation to support the need for safer, more energy efficient and sustainable buildings.' Knauf Insulation is the UK's largest insulation manufacturer. Founded in 1979 as a US subsidiary of German building materials giant Knauf Group, the firm employs more than 6,000 people worldwide, including 600 at its three UK manufacturing plants in Cwmbran, St Helens and Queensferry. Ken Skates, cabinet secretary for transport and North Wales, said: 'The plans will be a major investment in the area and are a testament to the skills and facilities we have here.'

British pensioner arrested on suspicion of smuggling 60kg of cannabis resin from Spain

A British pensioner has been arrested trying to smuggle more than 60kg of cannabis resin from Spain. Police detained the 69-year-old unnamed Briton after discovering the drugs in a 'hidden' compartment built into the roof of a UK-registered vehicle at Ceuta, Spain's North African enclave, on Sunday evening. The Civil Guard said the car was bound for the port of Algeciras, near Gibraltar. Photos released by the authorities showed dozens of packages containing 62.3kg of cannabis. The packages were branded with names including "dream gelato" and "cereal milk". Authorities searched the vehicle after a sniffer dog helping with routine checks grew visibly agitated near the car, prompting a more extensive search. The suspect has been taken into custody. He will later be brought to court under an alleged drug trafficking offence. A spokesman for the Civil Guard in Ceuta said: 'A total of 62.3 kilos of cannabis resin was discovered in a secret compartment in the roof of the vehicle. 'The driver, a British man born in 1956 who was registered as a UK resident, was subsequently arrested. 'The suspect will now go before a court in Ceuta as the suspected author of a crime of drug trafficking. 'The drugs have been seized and handed over to a central government delegation and the vehicle is now under the supervision of the courts.'
