Lynas, Kelantan join forces to tap local rare earths for Kuantan plant
In a statement today, Lynas said the MoU is non-binding and remains subject to the negotiation and finalisation of definitive agreements.
It said the memorandum outlines a framework for both parties to strengthen, promote and develop cooperation to advance the Malaysian rare earths industry in Kelantan.
'It also provides a basis for MB Inc and Lynas to negotiate a definitive agreement for the supply of MREC feedstock to the Lynas Malaysia Advanced Materials Plant in Kuantan once the project commences production,' it added.
Lynas Rare Earths chief executive officer and managing director Amanda Lacaze said Malaysia is already recognised as a rare earths centre of excellence through Lynas' operations, and the MoU marks a significant step towards developing locally sourced and separated rare earth products.
'Lynas is delighted to sign this MoU with the Kelantan state government's MB Inc. This is a significant step for Lynas and the Malaysian rare earths industry, bringing together Lynas Malaysia's over a decade of rare earths industry expertise and Kelantan state's rare earth resources,' she said.
Lacaze noted that Malaysia's ionic clay deposits have strong potential as future feedstock for Lynas Malaysia, particularly due to the high concentration of heavy rare earths, which are in demand for advanced technologies such as electric vehicles and electronics.
'We look forward to working closely with MB Inc to ensure that the MREC produced meets the high environmental and technical standards required by Lynas and our customers across Malaysian and global manufacturing supply chains,' she added. — Bernama

Reduced levy to take effect on Aug 8: Minister
PETALING JAYA: The reduced tariffs on Malaysian exports will take effect on Aug 8 following the conclusion of negotiations between both countries, said International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz. He said both governments are expected to issue a joint statement this weekend to formalise the agreement, which he described as a significant breakthrough in bilateral trade relations. 'In the tariff negotiations, we adopted a comprehensive and systematic approach in finalising Malaysia's offer to the US. 'The ministry's negotiation team worked closely with various government agencies to coordinate efforts. We also obtained Cabinet approval to present an offer to the US that we believe is fair for Malaysia.' He said the outcome reflects the strength of Malaysia-US economic ties with the US remaining Malaysia's largest export market valued at RM198.65 billion in 2024, and affirms Malaysia's credibility as a reliable trade and investment partner. Tengku Zafrul said the revised 19% tariff aligns Malaysia with regional competitors, helping safeguard national interests while maintaining export competitiveness. He also directly addressed public concerns that Malaysia may have compromised its halal standards to meet US demands, dismissing such claims as false. 'What was agreed upon was to facilitate the import process of US halal meat into Malaysia, which will be carried out by US halal certification bodies recognised by the Islamic Development Department. 'Compliance with syariah requirements remains a prerequisite for all halal meat imports, including those from the US. Any meat that does not meet the department's standards cannot be brought into Malaysia.' Tengku Zafrul thanked the US Trade Representative's Office and the US Commerce Department for their constructive cooperation. He said the ministry has been working with Bank Negara Malaysia to assess the economic implications of various tariff levels and would coordinate with other ministries to support local exporters, especially SMEs. The ministry will also promote the use of Malaysia's 18 free trade agreements to diversify export markets and align efforts with long-term national strategies, including the New Industrial Master Plan 2030, Green Investment Strategy and the National Semiconductor Strategy.

PJ mayor outlines conditions for privatised parking scheme

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) agrees in principle with the Selangor government's decision to privatise the city's parking system, but several conditions must be met before it can be implemented. Mayor Zahri Samingon said MBPJ supported the move as it was a policy approved by the state executive council. However, he said, the privatisation process must not disrupt the existing parking situation in the city. 'One of our conditions is that the revenue (MBPJ earns) must be the same or higher than what we get currently,' he told reporters after attending the closing ceremony of the PJ International Outdoor Expo 2025 here today. 'There are many terms that we still need to refine further, such as the basis for enforcement delegation, how long it will be delegated, and so on. 'So there are around three to four more terms that we need to get more details on,' he said, adding that the council had already met with Menteri Besar Selangor Incorporated (MBI) several times to seek clarification on the plan. He said further discussions will be held with MBI to finalise the remaining details. The state government's Smart Intelligent Parking (SIP) system is set to be implemented in PJ, Subang Jaya, Shah Alam and Selayang from Aug 1. It will involve the four local councils, state-owned Rantaian Mesra Sdn Bhd, and a private company. Enforcement will be carried out by the local councils, with Rantaian Mesra acting as the system coordinator. The private company, which has not been named, will handle day-to-day parking operations. The MPs of all four constituencies have objected to the proposed system, urging the state government to review the proposal and establish an independent, bipartisan committee to reassess the scheme. State local government executive councillor Ng Suee Lim was reported to have said that the state was prepared to postpone the plan if issues raised are not resolved before Aug 1.

Subang Jaya appoints ITMax unit as parking operator for 10 years
Selmax Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of ITMax System Berhad, has been appointed to manage parking operations in Subang Jaya on a 10-year revenue-sharing concession. PETALING JAYA : The Subang Jaya city council has appointed Selmax Sdn Bhd to manage parking in the city under the Selangor intelligent parking system, Selmax's parent company ITMax System Berhad announced today. The appointment is for 10 years, with an option for a 5-year extension, on a revenue-sharing arrangement in which Selmax will receive 50% of the revenue generated from parking-related collection. ITMax chief executive William Tan said Selmax will be responsible for deploying, managing, and operating all gazetted car park spaces under MBSJ's jurisdiction. He said the company's smart parking solutions had achieved success in other cities. 'This initiative is also aligned with Selangor's broader Smart City agenda, and we are proud to play a role in driving its digital transformation in cities with an integrated smart city infrastructure,' he said in a statement.
