Sweden arrests teen after triple killing at hair salon

Swedish police have arrested a teen suspect after three youths aged from 15 to 20 were killed in a shooting at a hair salon, authorities said on Wednesday, with rising concern over gang violence in the Scandinavian nation.
Tuesday's shooting took place in broad daylight in the university city of Uppsala, a day before it hosted the Valborg spring festival, which draws more than 100,000 people for bonfires and celebrations in the streets, many of them students.
"One person has been arrested, suspected of murder," police commander Erik Akerlund told reporters, with prosecutors saying the suspect was 16.
The teen had slipped away from a facility for troubled teens two weeks ago, according to prosecutors and local media.
Swedish media reported that at least one of the dead had connections to a criminal gang, though police would not confirm those reports.
"That is something we are obviously looking into, but we don't want to commit ourselves to only that possibility," Uppsala police spokesman Stefan Larsson said.
Uppsala, about 70 kilometres north of Stockholm, is the home base for Sweden's two most notorious gangs, Rumba and Foxtrot.
Their leaders, Ismail Abdo and Rawa Majid, are both now believed to be orchestrating operations from abroad.
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson called the shooting "an extremely violent act."
"It almost looks like an execution," he told the news agency TT.
Sweden has struggled for years to rein in shootings and bombings between rival gangs.
Akerlund said several people "considered of interest in the investigation" had been brought in for questioning.
He said police had obtained camera footage from the scene and "secured a lot of evidence."
Prosecutor Andreas Nygren said the suspect was arrested at his home around two hours after the shooting, and that "more than 100 interrogations" had been held as of Wednesday morning. (AFP)

Before the explosion, emergency services were called to investigate the gas leak and had evacuated the immediate area, including a children's summer camp. Twenty-one of the 45 injured were from the emergency services, including 12 police officers, Rome police told AFP. Two men were hospitalised and life-threatening condition, one with burns on 55 percent of his body, local health authorities told the AGI news agency. Fabio Balzani, head of the sports centre, said if the fire had occurred just a bit later it could have been disastrous. Some 60 children had been expected at the summer camp and around 120 people booked to use the swimming pool, as relief from a heatwave that has baked the city for the past week. "It would have been a massacre, a catastrophe," Balzani told AFP. Andrea Quattrocchi, the local chief of the Carabinieri police force, also said the timely intervention of his team was crucial. "They extracted a person alive from a burning car," who was taken to hospital, he told reporters. Witnesses said an ambulance exploded in the fire. Taiwan VP says not intimidated after alleged China plot
Taiwan's vice president said she would not be intimidated by Beijing after the government accused Chinese embassy staff of planning to ram her car during an official visit to Europe. Taiwan's top China policy body, the Mainland Affairs Council (MAC), on Friday said Hsiao Bi-khim's motorcade was surveilled and followed in a ploy to be rammed during a visit to the Czech Republic in March 2024. Citing a Czech intelligence agency report, the council said staff from the Chinese Embassy in Prague were behind the incident. Czech military intelligence spokesman Jan Pejsek told AFP on Sunday that Hsiao was targeted by 'persons legalised in diplomatic positions at the Chinese Embassy in Prague'. He said they tailed her and sought information about Hsiao's programme and meetings with Czech officials. 'We even recorded attempts by the Chinese civil secret service to create conditions for a demonstrative kinetic action against a protected person, which, however, did not go beyond the preparatory stage,' Pejsek added. Hsiao, who was vice president-elect at the time of the trip, posted on social media on Saturday, that she 'had a great visit to Prague & thank the Czech authorities for their hospitality & ensuring my safety'. 'The CCP's unlawful activities will NOT intimidate me from voicing Taiwan's interests in the international community,' she said. 'Taiwan will not be isolated by intimidation,' she added. 'Violent nature' Like most countries, Prague does not have official diplomatic relations with Taipei. China claims Taiwan as its territory and in recent years, has ramped up the deployment of fighter jets and warships around the self-ruled island. It has also sought to erase Taiwan from the international stage by poaching its diplomatic allies and blocking it from global forums. Taipei said on Friday that 'the Chinese Embassy in the Czech Republic followed, conducted surveillance on, and even attempted to ram the motorcade, seriously threatening the personal safety of Vice President Hsiao and her entourage'. It added the incident exposed CCP's 'violent nature' and lack of 'sincerity' in communication. A Taiwan security official, speaking to AFP on condition of anonymity, said it was a 'typical case' of China's 'transnational repression' against dissidents or those who criticise China. 'China uses legal grey areas to harass, threaten or oppress their targets,' the official said. The Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China (IPAC), an international group that has challenged Beijing's human rights record, said in a statement signed by 51 lawmakers from nearly 30 countries that it supported Hsiao and 'Taiwanese citizens who may be subject to coercion by the Chinese state while travelling abroad'. The strike on Monday destroyed part of the administrative building at Evin, a large, heavily fortified complex in the north of Tehran. "According to official figures, 71 people were killed in the attack on Evin prison," said judiciary spokesman Asghar Jahangir of the attack, part of the bombardment campaign Israel launched on June 13. According to Jahangir, the victims at Evin included administrative staff, guards, prisoners and visiting relatives as well as people living nearby. Images shared by the judiciary showed destroyed walls, collapsed ceilings, scattered debris, and broken surfaces across waiting areas at the facility. The judiciary said that Evin's medical centre and visiting rooms had been targeted. On Tuesday, a day after the strike, the judiciary said that the Iranian prison authority had transferred inmates out of Evin prison, without specifying their number or identifying them. The inmates at Evin have included Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi as well as several French nationals and other foreigners. (AFP)
