Bursa Malaysia Kicks Off Higher, Mirrors Wall Street Gains

Barnama20-05-2025
KUALA LUMPUR, May 20 (Bernama) -- Bursa Malaysia opened slightly higher on Tuesday, rebounding from yesterday's decline as investors tracked an overnight rally on Wall Street.
At 9.07 am, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) rose 2.09 points, or 0.13 per cent, to 1,558.23 from Monday's close of 1,556.14.
The benchmark index had opened 0.78 of-a-point higher at 1,556.92.
Market breadth was positive, with 256 gainers outpacing 101 decliners. A total of 202 counters were unchanged, 1,850 untraded, and 17 suspended.
Turnover stood at 123.18 million shares valued at RM58.98 million.
Hong Leong Investment Bank (HLIB), in a note, said it expects the FBM KLCI to trend sideways during the ongoing corporate results season, amid a tariff-driven global economic slowdown that could weigh on domestic activity and earnings.
'This cautious outlook will likely persist until a permanent and mutually beneficial trade deal is reached between the United States and key trading partners, including Malaysia,' the investment bank said.
HLIB added that lingering policy uncertainty from the Trump administration and unclear signals on the Federal Reserve's rate path would continue to pressure market sentiment and business confidence.
Among heavyweights, CIMB and Petronas Gas added 2.0 sen each to RM7.12 and RM17.60, respectively. Public Bank and Press Metal were unchanged at RM4.49 and RM4.96, while Maybank, Tenaga Nasional and IHH Healthcare slipped 2.0 sen each to RM10.12, RM14.08 and RM6.97.

Ringgit ends higher against US$, other major currencies on Malaysia-US trade deal optimism

KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit ended higher against the US dollar and other major currencies, buoyed by optimism that Malaysia could secure a more favourable trade deal with the United States (US), said an analyst. The local note also traded higher versus the US dollar for the fifth consecutive day. At 6 pm, the ringgit rose to 4.2135/2210 against the greenback from Wednesday's close of 4.2255/2300. Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said Malaysia is actively engaging in discussions with the US over the impending 25 per cent tariff rate set to take effect on Aug 1, aiming to secure a rate below 20 per cent. SPI Asset Management managing partner Stephen Innes said regional tailwinds further lifted sentiment after US President Donald Trump concluded a trade deal with Japan on Tuesday, which included reducing tariffs on the import of Japanese goods into the US to 15 per cent from 25 per cent. "These developments are fuelling hopes that Washington's broader tariff strategy is shifting from confrontation to compromise. "Against this backdrop, investors see Malaysia as a likely beneficiary of the next wave of bilateral deals,' he told Bernama. Innes added that the ringgit's recent gains may signal its potential to benefit from improved trade conditions following the US-Japan agreement. At the close, the ringgit was higher against a basket of major currencies. It advanced against the Japanese yen to 2.8751/8804 from 2.8837/8870, rose against the British pound at 5.7080/7182 from 5.7230/7291 and inched up against the euro to 4.9517/9605 from 4.9586/9639. The local note was firmer against regional peers, except the Philippine peso. It increased vis-à-vis the Singapore dollar to 3.2995/3057 from 3.3071/3109, appreciated against the Thai baht to 13.0570/0863 from 13.1370/1567 and improved versus the Indonesian rupiah to 258.5/259.1 from 259.1/259.5. However, the local note traded slightly lower against the Philippine peso, at 7.43/7.45, compared to 7.42/7.44 at yesterday's close. - Bernama

Oriental Interest's net profit rises to RM45.48mil in 3Q

KUALA LUMPUR: Oriental Interest Bhd 's net profit rose to RM45.484 million for its third quarter ended May 31, 2025 (3QF2025), from RM25.233 million a year earlier. The property development segment continued to be the key growth driver, with revenue increasing by 95 per cent in the current quarter, the group said in a Bursa Malaysia filing today. Revenue surged to RM305.245 million from RM180.424 million previously. "This growth was largely attributed to higher revenue recognition from construction progress of ongoing projects, and contributions from newly launched developments,' it said. Despite ongoing challenges in both the property sector and the broader domestic economy, the group said it continued its upward trajectory in revenue and profitability, underpinned by strong property sales that reflect the quality and value of its developments. "Looking ahead, the group remains well-positioned for continued growth, supported by unbilled property sales of approximately RM428.14 million as at the end of the reporting financial quarter. "With healthy bookings and strong sales momentum, the group is optimistic about delivering another year of positive performance in FY2025,' it said. - Bernama
