Felix Baumgartner: Extreme athlete who jumped from edge of space dies after paragliding crash
The 56-year-old Austrian lost control of his motorised paraglider while flying over Porto Sant'Elpidio in the central Marche region.
He then fell to the ground near the swimming pool of a hotel. The reasons for the accident were unclear.
According to reports, he fell ill and lost control.
During the fall, he is thought to have hit a hotel employee, who was taken to hospital with neck injuries, according to Sky Sports Austria.
She was reportedly injured by a piece of debris that had been dislodged during the vehicle's impact.
The mayor of Porto Sant'Elpidio, Massimiliano Ciarpella, offered the town's condolences for the death of "a symbol of courage and passion for extreme flights".
Mr Baumgartner is best known for his skydive from the edge of space in 2012.
He ascended to 128,097ft in a pressurised capsule suspended beneath a giant helium balloon.
He then jumped out, freefalling for four minutes and 19 seconds before opening his parachute.
He made the historic jump over Roswell, New Mexico, reaching a peak speed of over 833mph (1,343kph).
Mr Baumgartner's altitude record stood until 2014 when American computer scientist Alan Eustace did a jump from a height of 135,890ft.

Manchester United have rebuffed approaches from clubs in the Premier League and Italy for Harry Maguire, Mail Sport understands. A number of interested parties at home and abroad have been told the likelihood is that the England defender is likely to extend his contract – and spend the rest of his career at Old Trafford. Whether that happens remains to be seen however, three top flight sides and two from Italy explored a move for Maguire this summer and were turned away. The 32-year-old sees his current, £190,000-a-week deal expire at the end of the forthcoming season. While his camp declined to comment, it is thought that he is keen to stay at United, whom he joined from Leicester City for £80m in 2019, a then world record fee for a defender. Maguire's desire is to emulate the likes of Denis Irwin, Gary Pallister, Steve Bruce and Bryan Robson, who are all fondly regarded as key United mainstays by the club's support. No talks have yet taken place over extending Maguire's contract, but the message to interested parties is believed to have been that United are keen to keep him. Regardless, the man with 64 England caps is unlikely to be short of options. He is known to be aware of stunning season former team-mate Scott McTominay has enjoyed following his switch to Napoli, which saw him named Serie A's most valuable player as he scored 12 goals to help his side win the league. In Maguire's case, former United bosses Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who brought him to Old Trafford, could offer escapes to Turkey via Fenerbahce and Besiktas, while Galatasaray are known to be admirers. Nailsea teacher competes in powerchair race across Europe
A language teacher is competing against three others in a powered wheelchair race from London to northern Strachecky, 41, from Nailsea, will have to navigate cities, borders, public transport, and accessibility barriers, all while taking on daily challenges – to reach Turin first for the chance to win €1,000 (£870).Race founder and wheelchair manufacturer Freedom One Life said it wanted to challenge outdated narratives around mobility and Strachecky, who set off on Monday, said: "I've decided to live life to the fullest – and what better way to do that than by racing across Europe." The mother of two, who teaches Spanish, said: "I want to show that with the right tools and support, anyone can live a full and active life, and I like challenging common misconceptions about powerchair users." Freedom One Life founder Alex Papanikolaou said: "I constantly hear how stressful and inaccessible travel is to disabled people, so I wanted to make a big and bold statement and really show what's possible. "With the right equipment, planning and support, we can lead the adventure." Mr Papanikolaou said: "The four competitors we've chosen each bring something totally unique and I can't wait to see how they take on this challenge."They're not just racing across Europe, they're changing the conversation around what freedom and accessible travel really looks like."
