An Australian author jailed in China has detailed his "unbearable" prison suffering in a letter to supporters, saying he still dreams of returning home one day.
Chinese-born Australian writer
Yang Jun
has been jailed since 2019 on
espionage charges
he has forcefully denied.
The author and academic, also known by pen name Yang Hengjun, was handed a suspended death sentence last year that could be downgraded to life in prison pending good behaviour.
A former pro-democracy blogger who also wrote spy novels, Yang thanked all those who continued to call for his freedom.
"All of this solicitude and solace has helped me to bear what has been untold and unbearable suffering," Yang wrote in a letter dated January 10, but released to media this week.
Yang has previously told supporters that he was tortured at a secret detention site and that he feared forced confessions may be used against him.
His Australia-based family said last year they had grave fears for his health after the discovery of a cyst growing on his kidney.
"Tears blur my vision," Yang wrote in his latest letter, addressed to Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
"I know you and the Australian government endeavour to do your utmost to bring me home for medical care and reunification with my family."
Australian foreign minister Penny Wong
has repeatedly called for Yang's release.
"Dr Yang writes of his great love for his country -- and we want to see him home in Australia, reunited with his family," Wong said in a statement.
"We continue to advocate for Dr Yang's interests and wellbeing at every opportunity and at the highest levels, including access to appropriate medical care."
Attempts to raise Yang's case have irked Chinese officials in the past, who have told Australia to stop meddling in their country's justice system.
Yang was arrested on a trip back to China in January 2019. His closed-door trial was heard in Beijing in 2021.

T flags Rs 100 cr fake invoice fraud to Maha

Hyderabad: In a major move to curb tax fraud across state lines, the Telangana commercial taxes department has decided to formally notify the Maharashtra govt about the large-scale GST input credit scam involving fake invoices and empty vehicle shipments , a racket suspected to have siphoned off over ₹100 crore in taxes. At the heart of the scam is a Hyderabad-based company that issued high-value tax invoices for copper supplies to a company in Maharashtra, but with no actual movement of goods. According to preliminary findings, vehicles were dispatched empty from Telangana, while documentation falsely showed substantial consignments being transported. The fraudulent scheme revolves around the use of bogus input tax credit, one of the most common and damaging forms of GST fraud. These schemes typically involve shell or paper-only companies that issue invoices for goods or services that were never actually supplied, allowing colluding firms to illegitimately claim input tax credit from the govt. You Can Also Check: Hyderabad AQI | Weather in Hyderabad | Bank Holidays in Hyderabad | Public Holidays in Hyderabad How the scam worked The operation followed a layered method of deception. A Hyderabad company generated fake invoices for copper goods, billing a Maharashtra firm without delivering any actual materials. The receiving company in Maharashtra then claimed to have paid 18% GST and sought input credit based on that fabricated transaction. The scam didn't end there. The Maharashtra firm recycled the fraud, issuing its own set of fake invoices to a third company, again falsely claiming to have supplied goods and paid tax. This chain of deceit allows each party to benefit from tax credits on taxes never actually paid, creating significant revenue losses for the govt. Vigilance intensified Commercial taxes commissioner K Haritha emphasised the expanding scope of the department's crackdown. "We are increasing vigilance regarding companies that create fake invoices or claim fraudulent input credits. Typically, this type of scam involves a chain of companies," she said. "We previously focused on identifying firms within our state, but now we will inform state govts about companies participating in this crime. If vigilance is heightened across all states, such fraudulent activities will decrease," she added. Big push against GST fraud Hyderabad: Since April 25, the commercial taxes department has stepped up enforcement and uncovered 304 fake GST cases. In these, ₹170 crore in fraudulent input tax credit was blocked, notices worth ₹49.7 crore were issued and ₹8.36 crore has already been recovered.

Denied meeting with Modi, OPS walks out of NDA, keeps political opponents guessing next move

He also said OPS would begin his state-wide tour ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections after taking stock of the prevailing political scenario in Tamil Nadu. 'At present, we are not in alliance with any party,' Ramachandran said in response to a question about whether OPS would consider an alliance with another party ahead of the state polls. Speaking to reporters here Thursday, OPS adviser and former state minister Panruti S. Ramachandran said, 'We are breaking the alliance with NDA. You all know the reason.' Chennai: Days after PM Narendra Modi declined to meet him and hours after he met Tamil Nadu CM M.K. Stalin during a morning walk in Adyar, former AIADMK leader O. Panneerselvam (OPS) Thursday walked out of the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Not long after Modi declined to meet him, OPS publicly began to criticise the BJP-led central government for 'withholding funds' under the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan Scheme—marking a shift from his earlier pro-BJP stance. On whether he would consider teaming up with actor-turned politician Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), former chief minister OPS said, 'Time will tell, and there is still time for elections.' Later in the evening, OPS met Stalin at his residence. Speaking to reporters, he said it was a formal meeting to inquire about his health and 'no politics was discussed'. Asked if he would join the DMK-led alliance, he said, 'Anything can happen in politics. There is enough time for elections. There is no permanent friend and permanent enemy in politics.' OPS was always seen as Modi's man in the AIADMK. He himself publicly told supporters in July 2017 that he decided to combine forces with AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) at the behest of the Prime Minister and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Former coordinator of the AIADMK, OPS was expelled from the party in July 2022 and has since been heading the AIADMK Cadres Rights Retrieval Committee—while legally contesting EPS's control of the party. Chennai-based political analysts ThePrint spoke to said OPS has three options, but it has yet to be seen if he can expand his support base. Political analyst N. Sathiya Moorthy underlined that the main issue between OPS and EPS was that the former wanted to lead AIADMK and serve as chief minister. 'Now, if he joins any party, he cannot be the chief ministerial face. Secondly, all these years, OPS is known to have been ideologically aligned with BJP. He cannot wash it off easily to join any of the parties in Tamil Nadu that are anti-BJP including Vijay's TVK.' However, referring to the former AIADMK leader's meeting with Stalin, political commentator Raveenthran Duraisamy said OPS might join DMK and become its 'Maravar face'. The Maravar is a backward community primarily based in southern Tamil Nadu. 'He (OPS) was shown the doors by BJP, hence he cannot go back there. Though TVK and Seeman's NTK are there for him, he might choose DMK over others for a better political space,' Duraisamy told ThePrint. Sathiya Moorthy added that OPS might lose his support base if he joins the DMK, since its opposition to DMK has been a core tenet of the AIADMK. Duraisamy, however, held a somewhat different view. The dynamics in Dravidian politics, he said, changed since the demise of former chief ministers M. Karunanidhi and J. Jayalalithaa. 'There is no hate against Stalin, unlike his father Karunanidhi. The previous elections data shows AIADMK's votes have moved to DMK. It is also proven that a lot of former AIADMK ministers, including Senthil Balaji, Sekar Babu and K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran, are now faring well in DMK as well. Hence, OPS has a good future in the DMK, but he may not reveal it now,' said Duraisamy. Also Read: Why EPS' call for anti-DMK alliance meets only rejection and silence From CM to rebel: OPS's political journey After Jayalalithaa's death on 5 December, 2016, OPS was unanimously elected chief minister by AIADMK MLAs. He had already served as chief minister between 2001 and 2002, and 2014 and 2015 when Jayalalithaa faced disqualification on account of a disproportionate assets case. By 7 February, 2017, OPS opened a front against Jayalalithaa's close aide V.K. Sasikala, who was then elected general secretary of the party and chosen to replace him as chief minister. He sat at Jayalalithaa's memorial and launched a Dharmayudham (war of principles) against Sasikala, who sacked him from the party position. He asserted at the time that he was appointed to the party post by Jayalalithaa and nobody could remove him. Sasikala was convicted in a separate disproportionate assets case, she declared EPS as the next chief minister before going to prison. In August 2017, OPS's faction merged with EPS's faction, after the latter turned against Sasikala and her nephew T.T.V. Dhinakaran. On 21 August that year, OPS was sworn in as deputy to CM EPS. In the party structure, OPS held the position of coordinator, while EPS was joint-coordinator, establishing a dual-leadership in the party. However, merger of the factions could not prevent infighting and the dual leadership model collapsed in 2022 in the aftermath of AIADMK's loss to the DMK-led alliance in Assembly polls the previous year. In the AIADMK general council meeting held in July 2022, EPS was unanimously elected interim general secretary and OPS, then coordinator and treasurer of the party, was sacked from primary membership, accused of collaborating with DMK, and attempting to disrupt party activities. OPS has since waged a lonely legal battle to reclaim AIADMK leadership, alleging that the election of general secretary was unfair. The Madras High Court and later the Supreme Court rejected his pleas to stay EPS's election as general secretary. Meanwhile, he also filed a petition with the Election Commission in this regard, in which inquiry is still pending. Despite being expelled from AIADMK, OPS contested the 2024 Lok Sabha polls from Ramanathapuram seat as an Independent with BJP support under the 'Jackfruit' symbol. He lost to IUML's K. Navas Kani. In February 2025, OPS's camp expressed willingness to return to AIADMK, which EPS dismissed. After AIADMK and BJP formally revived their alliance for the 2026 Assembly elections, top BJP leaders including Modi and Shah kept an arm's distance from OPS during their visits to the state. Chhangur Baba syndicate: ED uncovers 63cr fin irregularities

Lucknow: The Enforcement Directorate (ED), in its ongoing investigation into Chhangur Baba's syndicate, has uncovered financial irregularities amounting to Rs 63 crore, a significant portion of which allegedly originated from foreign sources and was used to fund alleged forced religious conversions, land purchases and construction activities. The ED said funds were funnelled through 22 bank accounts belonging to Chhangur and his aides. Major credits were received in the accounts of his associates Naveen Rohra and Neetu Rohra across various banks, including a private and three govt banks. It added that Rs 35 lakh and Rs 2.19 crore were received from UAE-based sources into two govt bank accounts linked to the accused. Funds were categorised as "proceeds of crime" under the PMLA by the ED. The ED alleged that Chhangur ran an organised conversion syndicate from the Chand Auliya Dargah in Balrampur. He reportedly used religious lectures, a book titled Shijra-e-Tayyaba, and psychological manipulation to influence individuals to convert. A forensic audit of bank records revealed Rs 3.45 crore was transferred to "Apna Ghar Construction" for building a cow shed, hospital and bungalow, though the total cost was shown as Rs 12 crore. Intriguingly, only Rs 5.7 crore was paid, leading to a fresh FIR by the construction firm against Chhangur and his group. Substantial amount was also traced to individuals allegedly used as proxies: Rs 1.20 crore to Durgesh Kumar and Santosh Kumar, Rs 1.15 crore to Shehzad Shaikh, Rs 64 lakh in one day to Vaseem Ahmad, Shameem Malik, and Malik Ali Ahmad, Rs 40 lakh to Afsar Ali, Rs 25 lakh to Mohammad Iktida Khan, and Rs 37.84 lakh to Jumman Khan. The agency further alleged that Chhangur, along with Naveen, purchased land worth Rs 16 crore in Pune, Maharashtra. The name of Sangeeta Upadhyay, wife of Balrampur CJM court clerk Rajesh Kumar Upadhyay, has emerged in this land deal through a profit-sharing agreement. Financial links were established between Rajesh and Neetu Rohra, including a Rs 3.5 lakh transfer. Searches conducted on July 17, 2025, across 15 locations linked to the accused, led to the recovery of multiple sale deeds and property documents. These documents allegedly show systematic acquisition of immovable assets during 2020–2021 using illicit funds to mask the origin of money. Statements recorded under Section 17 of PMLA from property sellers confirmed sales to associates of Chhangur Baba, primarily to Naveen and Neetu Rohra. They also stated that Baba was directly involved in these deals, the sources privy to the probe said. The ED initiated the probe following registration of a PMLA case on July 9, 2025. The ED, while taking custody remand of Chhangur from the court, informed that the syndicate used laundered funds not just for property deals but also to "lure innocent people" into changing their religion, thus establishing a clear nexus between financial crime and religious exploitation. Further legal proceedings are underway, with more disclosures expected as the investigation progresses. Currently, Chhangur Baba is under remand of ED from July 28 and will remain till Friday (Aug 1). The ATS arrested Jalaluddin alias Chhangur Baba and his associate Neetu alias Nasreen on July 5.
