
A British Leyland of TV is the Government's worst idea yet
A show about a good-looking human rights lawyer who becomes a triumphant, reforming prime minister? Or a mini-series about a brilliant, glamorous economist who becomes Britain's first female chancellor? Perhaps a movie about a fiery red-head who works her way up from poverty to become the most powerful woman in the country?
As the Government paves the way for a potential merger between ITV, Channel 4, and Channel 5 to create a single, state-backed commercial broadcaster, it is not hard to imagine the kind of shows it might commission.
But hold on. A British Leyland of television is the Government's worst idea yet. What the industry actually needs is more competition – not less.
It may still be a few years off. But Sir Keir Starmer's Labour Government is very clearly paving the way for a major consolidation of the British broadcasting industry. Last week, as part of its shiny new 'industrial strategy', it opened the door to removing the barriers that prevent a merger between the existing terrestrial broadcasters. Apparently, ministers will examine 'possible consolidation between broadcasters', along with 'closer strategic partnerships'.
Meanwhile, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) and Ofcom will be asked to review their definitions of 'television advertising' to include YouTube and Netflix, which again will make mergers easier.
Add it all up, and it is not hard to see where this is going. We will need a single, state-backed commercial broadcaster to cope with a changing market, stand up to the American streaming giants, and preserve what used to be one of the UK's strongest industries. Heck, they could even bring in the marketing whizzes who gave us Great British Energy and Great British Railways to come up with the branding for Great British Television.
Of course, we all understand that something needs to be done. In a world where streaming dominates, and with most people under 30 barely even aware of what traditional broadcasting through signals and aerials was, the industry is in an increasingly dire position.
ITV, the biggest of the three, has seen its share price slump from 265p 10 years ago to just 80p now, and the broadcaster is only worth £3bn. There has already been plenty of speculation about a break-up, perhaps with a sale of its production unit, or else a full-scale takeover of the company, probably by a foreign buyer. Channel 4 has been slashing jobs and cutting back on its programming budget as it grapples with a declining advertising market.
Meanwhile, Channel 5, which has never been a huge success since it was launched in 1997, is also potentially in play as its American owner Paramount prepares for a takeover by media company Skydance. Why not put all three together and create a new British-owned powerhouse in commercial broadcasting?

Driver safety AI tech firm Seeing Machines boosted by Mitsubishi deal
London-listed driver safety tech firm Seeing Machines has agreed a collaboration with Mitsubishi's European division to grow sales across the continent. The computer vision technology firm said its Guardian Generation 3 driver monitoring system will be used in Mitsubishi's logistics, distribution and maintenance fleet. It also wants to take advantage of the 'extensive direct relationships' Mitsubishi has with truck and bus equipment manufacturers to promote the system. The tie-up comes as car manufacturers seek to abide by the European Union's new Vehicle General Safety Regulations (GSR). Described as a 'vaccine for vehicles', the GSR requires all new motors to have certain safety features, including an emergency stop signal and systems monitoring blind spots and tyre pressure. Seeing Machines claims that Guardian, which tracks a driver's eye movements using sensors and cameras, helps lower the threat of drowsy driving in commercial vehicles by over 94 per cent. 'This agreement reflects our shared commitment to reducing transport risk, and we're proud to support Seeing Machines in scaling its impact across a range of transportation industries.' The announcement follows just a few days after Mitsubishi's American arm revealed it had begun a six-week pilot of the Guardian technology, having initially made a referral agreement with Seeing Machines in February, Paul McGlone, chief executive of Seeing Machines, said: 'Our relationship with already delivering positive results, as demonstrated by the strong progress we have made in the Americas and the near-term opportunities it's creating. 'Mitsubishi Electric Europe's world-leading, proven reputation and established relationships position them as an ideal partner to bring our Guardian technology to new customers across the region as regulatory deadlines take effect.' Headquartered in Canberra, Australia, Seeing Machines has also collaborated with prominent companies such as General Motors, Daimler, Transport for London, and flagship airlines Qantas and Emirates. In the first three months of 2025, the group's technology was in over 3.2 million units, a 77 per cent year-on-year increase. Over the same period, production of new vehicles equipped with its driver monitoring technology was up by over a third from the previous quarter to 358,162 units. The firm further declared on Monday that it had renewed its distributor agreement with Connect Source, Australia's largest distributor of Guardian. Seeing Machines shares were 3.2 per cent up at 2.9p on Monday morning, although their value has shrunk by around 38 per cent over the past year.

UK's watered down welfare reforms will push 150,000 into poverty, modelling shows
LONDON, June 30 (Reuters) - New British welfare reforms are still expected to push 150,000 people into poverty despite Prime Minister Keir Starmer's government watering down the measures, according to fresh modelling ahead of a key parliamentary vote. Seeking to quell a rebellion threatened last week, Starmer revised his planned welfare cuts in an attempt to win over more than 100 lawmakers from his own party who had threatened to revolt over the issue in a vote on Tuesday. He amended the bill so that changes to make it tougher to collect some disability and sickness benefits would now apply only to new applicants, while the millions of people who already rely on benefits would no longer be affected. Publishing analysis of the updated policy, the government on Monday estimated that an extra 150,000 people will be pushed into relative poverty in 2030, 40% fewer than the 250,000 forecast to be affected before the changes. A spokesperson for Starmer told reporters that the analysis was not an impact assessment but poverty modelling. "What it doesn't reflect is the wider action we are taking to lift people out of poverty and raise living standards," they said. The government has said it is investing 1 billion pounds ($1.4 billion) a year to help people with disability and long-term health conditions into jobs, as part of broader employment support across the parliamentary term. Lawmakers opposed to the welfare cuts will now have to assess whether the changes Starmer has made are enough to convince them to back the bill. Starmer has argued that Britain's disability benefits system is too costly to sustain, and makes it too difficult for people who can work to do so, by penalising them for their earnings. BBC regrets not pulling Bob Vylan Glastonbury live stream
The corporation has come under fire after rapper Bobby Vylan – of the rap punk duo – led crowds at the festival's West Holts Stage in chants of 'free, free Palestine' and 'death, death to the IDF (Israel Defence Forces)'. Following the performance, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer criticised the chants as 'appalling hate speech' and on Monday broadcasting regulator Ofcom said it is 'very concerned' about the live stream. In a statement, the BBC said: 'Millions of people tuned in to enjoy Glastonbury this weekend across the BBC's output but one performance within our livestreams included comments that were deeply offensive. The BBC respects freedom of expression but stands firmly against incitement to violence. 'The antisemitic sentiments expressed by Bob Vylan were utterly unacceptable and have no place on our airwaves. We welcome Glastonbury's condemnation of the performance. 'The performance was part of a live stream of the West Holts stage on BBC iPlayer. 'The judgment on Saturday to issue a warning on screen while streaming online was in line with our editorial guidelines. 'In addition, we took the decision not to make the performance available on demand. The team were dealing with a live situation, but with hindsight we should have pulled the stream during the performance. We regret this did not happen.' The BBC said that in light of the performance, they would be looking at their guidance around live events so 'we can be sure teams are clear on when it is acceptable to keep output on air'. Avon and Somerset Police said at the weekend that they are assessing videos of comments made by Bob Vylan and Belfast rap trio Kneecap at Glastonbury to decide whether any offences may have been committed. A member of Kneecap, who performed on the West Holts stage in the slot directly after Bob Vylan, suggested fans 'start a riot' at his bandmate's forthcoming court appearance related to a terrorism charge. In addition, during their performance, a member of Kneecap also said 'f*** Keir Starmer' on stage after the Prime Minister called for the band not to play at the festival. Glastonbury Festival itself also condemned the chants by Bob Vylan, saying in a statement on Sunday they were 'appalled by the statements' made on stage. A statement on Instagram said: 'Their chants very much crossed a line and we are urgently reminding everyone involved in the production of the festival that there is no place at Glastonbury for antisemitism, hate speech or incitement to violence.' Bob Vylan, who formed in Ipswich in 2017, have released four albums addressing issues to do with racism, masculinity and class. Bobby Vylan's real name is Pascal Robinson-Foster, 34, according to reports. In a statement posted to Instagram, Vylan said: 'Teaching our children to speak up for the change they want and need is the only way that we make this world a better place. 'As we grow older and our fire starts to possibly dim under the suffocation of adult life and all its responsibilities, it is incredibly important that we encourage and inspire future generations to pick up the torch that was passed to us.'
