THOUSANDS of mobile customers are set to benefit from a free network boost – just hours after a major service was switched off.
O2 (Virgin Media) revealed it has upgraded its 4G and 5G coverage across more than 2,000 postcodes in Coventry, West Midlands.

The improvements are part of the company's £700million Mobile Transformation Plan, aimed at future-proofing the network and keeping pace with soaring demand.

A spokesperson said the plan ensures the network is 'fit for the future and can keep up with increasing customer demand.'
The free upgrade comes as mobile providers, including O2, continue to phase out older 3G services across the UK.
The switch-off is making way for more advanced and efficient 4G and 5G services.
Mobile usage has skyrocketed in recent years, with data traffic more than doubling over the past five years – making upgrades like this increasingly essential.
And O2 isn't the only one dishing out freebies.
Earlier this year, EE handed thousands of customers a free 5G upgrade, even for those on older 4G plans.
Vodafone also rolled out free speed boosts to eligible users, increasing data allowances and offering better access to 5G where available.

Meanwhile, Three UK recently gave select customers free roaming perks across Europe and upgraded network speeds in several major cities – all without charging a penny more.
These giveaways come as mobile giants try to stay ahead in an increasingly competitive market – and soften the blow of 3G shutdowns and rising bills for millions.
So if you're with one of the big networks, it's worth checking if a free upgrade is already waiting for you.
Is the 3G switch off that big of a deal?

It's unclear exactly how many people will be affected by the 3G switch off.
There wasn't much noise after Three, EE and Vodafone ended 3G.
So, there will undoubtedly be some still using 3G-only phones but the numbers are probably very small.
Just because it may be a small figure doesn't mean those people should be cast aside, especially if they're not very tech-savvy or vulnerable.
So definitely get in contact with O2 (or GiffGaff and Tesco Mobile) if you need support.

Over at Samsung and shoppers can get the bigger 512GB model for the price of the smaller 256GB device, in its double-storage offer. This is also set to stop on Friday, July 25 as pre-orders finish. Alternatively, if you're devoted to Apple, Giffgaff offers the iPhone 16 Pro for a reasonable £24 monthly plan, though there's a slightly higher initial cost of £25 upfront. Tech editor Dave Snelling said: "I've tried all of Samsung's previous Z Fold gadgets, and despite being blown away by the incredible technology, they have never replaced my normal phone. "However, that has all just changed. For the very first time, I'm actually truly smitten with a Samsung foldable. The tech giant has just released its new Z Fold7, and it really has to be seen to be believed. "Thanks to a new design and updated Armour FlexHinge, things have been seriously slimmed down this year, which makes the device feel much easier to handle. Another vital change this year is a boost to the cover screen. Samsung has made things bigger in 2025 with the Fold7 getting a 6.5-inch display - that's compared to a 6.3-inch panel on the Z Fold6." Vodacom's first-quarter service revenue rises 11.4% on Egypt growth
JOHANNESBURG, July 23 (Reuters) - South Africa's biggest mobile operator Vodacom Group (VODJ.J), opens new tab reported a rise of 11.4% in first-quarter service revenue on Wednesday compared to the same period last year, supported by growth in Egypt and group financial services. Vodacom, majority-owned by Britain's Vodafone (VOD.L), opens new tab, said group service revenue rose to 32.3 billion rand ($1.84 billion)in the three months to June 30. On a normalised basis, group service revenue jumped 13.8%, tracking favourably against its medium-term target of double-digit growth, Vodacom said. Service revenue in Egypt grew at 43.8% in local currency, making it a star performer. The South Africa market delivered a 3% increase, supported by contracts, while Tanzania, Democratic Republic of Congo and Lesotho contributed significantly to normalised growth of 12.4% in its international business. Service revenue outside of mobile services, such as from fintech, was a key growth driver and contributed 6.9 billion rand in the quarter, equating to 21.4% of the group and was "well on track to reach our target contribution of 30% by 2030," Vodacom Group CEO Shameel Joosub said in a statement. Group financial services revenue of 3.9 billion rand was supported by strong growth from the insurance business in South Africa, "excellent" growth in Egypt of 44.3%, and a 17.4% increase from the international business on the back of improved performance in Mozambique, Joosub said.
