Brentford's summer brings 'a massive moment in our evolution'

BBC News29-04-2025
This summer could be a big one for Brentford, regardless of whether or not we manage to grab a place in Europe for next season.Five long-serving members of the squad will be entering the final year of their contracts, and although the club has a year's option on Bryan Mbeumo, Yoane Wissa and Rico Henry, the deals of Vitaly Janelt and Mathias Jensen completely expire in 14 months' time.It is unusual for the Bees to be in a position like this. I can't remember any recent season when so many key players could potentially walk away at the same time. All five of them, when fit, have been mainstays in our team for years - with all but Wissa joining us in the Championship. Losing a few of this group would be a massive moment in our evolution.I am quite sentimental when it comes to long-serving players and would like all of them to extend their stays - but football doesn't always work like that. While Mbeumo and Wissa are still first choice, Jensen has found it hard to force his way back into the starting line-up - ahead of the vastly improved Mikkel Damsgaard - since his recent recovery from injury and Yehor Yarmoliuk has started to be chosen ahead of Janelt sometimes.Henry has only just regained fitness following almost 18 months of injury and may find it hard to oust Keane Lewis-Potter, who has had an outstanding season covering for him at left-back.With Ben Mee and Josh Dasilva out of contract this summer, and Michael Kayode's loan coming to an end then too, director of football Phil Giles and his team are going to be busy!Find more from Ian Westbrook at Beesotted podcast, external

Hamilton Accies snap up THREE signings hours before league kick-off – after being hit with transfer embargo

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) AT the end of last month Hamilton Accies announced they would NOT be able to sign any new players this year - after being hit with a season-long transfer embargo. But that hasn't stopped John Rankin from getting a few players in the door at their new home Broadwood just HOURS before their league kick off today. It's the opening day of League One action after Accies dropped down to the third tier again following their relegation from the Championship last season. The club couldn't avoid the drop after they were handed a shock 15-POINT deduction by league bosses with just THREE games left to play. The SPFL took action after the club breached multiple rules, including a failure to report not paying their players. Then following a hearing which took place on July 24, Accies were struck with their transfer embargo by league bosses for failing to settle their tax obligations on three occasions. That has left the crisis-hit club unable to buy any players for a fee or even sign players on a free transfer - if they have to pay them wages. But Accies boss Rankin has still managed to snap up THREE players ahead of their league opener against Montrose - by offering them AMATEUR contracts. More than two hours before kick-off, they announced the signing of Nigerian Under-23 international Idris Munir, who spent last season with Drumchapel United where he was named their Young Player of the Year. He also featured 49 times in the Nigerian Professional Football League before that, scoring 11 goals and providing four assists. Accies have also captured Mikey Stone, 21, who has been a free agent since being released by Huddersfield Town at the end of last season. Moment fuming Hamilton Accies fans call for the exit of director of football Gerry Strain after their home defeat to Morton And finally, 23-year-old defender Cale Loughery has also moved to Scotland following a stint in Romania with second division outfit Corvinus Hunedoara. The Canadian centre-back spent pre-season at Accies and impressed Rankin with his displays. On the move, the 23-year-old said: 'I'm delighted to sign here for Hamilton Accies. Pre-season has been tough, the gaffer has been challenging us from day one but it's been a great experience so far and I'm looking forward to getting started in the league this weekend.' 21-year-old Munir revealed Darian McKinnon played a big role in bringing him to the club. He said: 'I've been in the country for a few years and the opportunity to make this next stage in my development was one I couldn't turn down. I worked with Daz last year at Drumchapel so I know the standards that he sets. 'I'm really looking forward to getting started.' Fellow new recruit Stone said: 'Pre-season has been difficult but we've all been working hard and I'm looking forward to the challenge.' 'I've really enjoyed working with the gaffer and the boys in the run up to the league starting and I'm excited to get going.' Killie v Livi: Teams named ahead of Premiership opener at Rugby Park

The brand new Premiership season is set to kick off at Rugby Park as Kilmarnock host Livingston in the first game of the 2025/26 campaign. With only one 3pm game on the opening day, all eyes are on Ayrshire to see who can get off to a winning start. Stuart Kettlewell is taking charge of his first league game at Killie after replacing Derek McInnes following his departure to Hearts. Meanwhile David Martindale and Livingston are back in the top-flight after a season in the Championship. Whoever takes all three points will go top of the table for at least a couple of hours until Motherwell play Rangers at Fir Park later on Saturday. Kettlewell has started with Stryjek in goals and a three-man defence of Brandon, Mayo, and Stanger with Lyons, Brannan, Polworth, Lowery, and Watson supporting a front two of Daniels and Dackers. Martindale has Prior in goals behind Finlayson, McGowan, Wilson, Montgomery, Tait, Sylla, Pittman, Winter, Carey, and Muirhead. Following Saturday's double header there will be another three games on Sunday as Falkirk host Dundee United, Hibernian travel to Dundee and champions Celtic begin the defence of their title at home to St Mirren. Hearts and Aberdeen will then get their campaign underway at Tynecastle on Monday night.
