The beloved Great Jack O'Lantern Blaze has been fully reimagined for Halloween 2025

Time Out5 days ago
It may be hard to imagine right now in our city's new subtropical climate where a jaunt through a subway station feels like an expedition through the rainforest, but fall is coming. We're so ready—and so, too, are the folks at the beloved Great Jack O'Lantern Blaze, which lights up autumn nights with more than 7,000 ornately hand-carved pumpkins.
This year, the pumpkin paradise just north of the city promises a "completely reimagined" experience with multiple new displays, including intricate carvings of New York State landmarks, eye-popping classic video game icons and a whimsical hillside Wizard of Oz scene. Blaze: Hudson Valley returns to Van Cortlandt Manor in Croton-on-Hudson from September 12 through November 16. Tickets, starting at $24, go on sale August 6, and they do sell out, so book early.
Blaze offers an all-ages, walk-through experience packed with pumpkin displays. From the moment you first enter, you'll see pumpkins just about everywhere, each display more dazzling than the last. Expect to spend about 45 minutes walking through, but budget some extra time to take photos.
Jack-o'-lantern artists are already hard at work preparing for this year's Blaze season. All year, they brainstorm, plan and design, coming up with imaginative new pumpkin creations. Then, as fall nears, the pumpkins start arriving. Nearly 10,000 pumpkins show up on flatbed trucks throughout the season, all sourced from Wallkill View Farm in New Paltz. In addition to the real pumpkins, they also employ some Funkin "art pumpkins." But no matter what, every single jack-o'-lantern is individually hand-carved on site.
The process looks pretty similar to the traditional American pumpkin-carving method—except this operation is on steroids. It's not just a one-time carving bonanza. The artists stay on throughout the Halloween season, ready to carve fresh artwork when the heat and the rain take their toll on existing pumpkin displays.
That means no matter when you visit, you can expect pristine pumpkins, all ready for ooh-ing and ahh-ing. To take your Blaze experience to the next level, book an add-on ticket for The Gourd & Goblet Tavern where you can grab a drink and snacks inside a real 18th-century inn nestled along the pumpkin trail. The tavern is recommended for ages 18+.
While you're in Croton-on-Hudson, also check out immersive Sleepy Hollow-themed events that bring Washington Irving's classic tale to life in thrilling new ways. For families, daytime tours of Washington Irving's Sunnyside offer all-ages fun, including a shadow puppet film. For brave audiences, there's a nighttime version with master storyteller Jonathan Kruk and musician Jim Keyes performing Irving's "Legend."
Other things to do in the area include The Spirits of Sleepy Hollow Country: A Night of Legendary Magic at Philipsburg Manor where illusionists conjure the supernatural with ghostly tales and spellbinding tricks. There's also The Headless Horseman Files: An Immersive Sleepy Hollow Whodunit, a daytime theatrical mystery walk where visitors gather clues and uncover what really happened to Ichabod Crane.
All events are held rain or shine. Proceeds support Historic Hudson Valley, the Tarrytown-based non-profit educational organization that owns and operates these National Historic Landmarks.

Prince William and Kate's 'intelligent' plan for Princess Charlotte post-Harry issue

Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info Prince William and Kate Middleton are reportedly crafting a strategy to shield Princess Charlotte from the same challenges faced by her uncle, Prince Harry. Last month, on Sunday, July 27, William and Charlotte were spotted savouring the Lionesses' victory at the Women's Euro 2025 final in Basel, Switzerland. A Royal expert has hinted that Charlotte's attendance at the game may reflect a fresh tactic to tackle a longstanding issue that has troubled Royal siblings like Prince Harry, Prince Andrew, and even Queen Elizabeth's late sister, Princess Margaret. The issue centres on the so-called "spare" Royal who struggles with feeling "overlooked and purposeless". Writing for the I, Royal commentator Richard Palmer posited that the Waleses are determined to avoid any of their children feeling less valued, thus circumventing the "spare" dilemma. READ MORE - Jet2 'sorry' as mum and kids 'traumatised' at being refused to flight home READ MORE - Motorist gets petty revenge on 'entitled' neighbour who kept parking on their drive He further explained: "In a Royal Family traditionally focused on the need to create an heir to the throne, and then a spare just in case something goes wrong, the Waleses want their children to have emotional security instead of giving special treatment to the chosen one." In stark contrast to King Charles, the couple is placing their children's needs above Royal obligations. Additionally, insiders close to the Royals told Richard that Charlotte "has inherited her mother's poise and an inner strength and confidence", reports the Mirror. Bringing her along to celebrate the Lionesses' Euros success might be part of grooming her for her future responsibilities within the Royal Family. American Royal biographer Sally Bedell Smith has hinted that Princess Charlotte might soon be stepping up to take on official duties for the Queen in the streamlined monarchy, with a possible focus on sports. Speaking to the i Paper, she remarked: "I think this is an intelligent way to do it. I would imagine Charlotte will be part of the picture. I'm not so sure about Louis." The term "Spare" resonates with those following Royal affairs, as it was the title chosen by Prince Harry for his revealing 2023 memoir. In his book, Prince Harry caused a global stir by disclosing private family matters. These revelations are believed to have strained Harry's relationship with his family, particularly with his father, King Charles, and his brother, Prince William. Prince Harry famously stepped back from his Royal responsibilities and moved to Montecito, California, with his wife Meghan Markle, a former actress, and their children Archie and Lilibet. Recently, there has been speculation that the Prince and Princess of Wales might leave Adelaide Cottage for Fort Belvedere in Windsor's Home Park Estate. Yet, Hello magazine's Royal editor, Emily Nash, casts doubt on these rumours, pointing out that her sources say "they've been very happy" at Adelaide Cottage. She highlighted their current situation: "Enjoying precious time together as a family of five, with no live-in staff and with easy access to Lambrook, the Berkshire school attended by Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis." Yet, she didn't rule out the chance of them moving in the future, remarking that William, with his considerable Duchy of Cornwall income, could comfortably afford another home. Emily also mentioned there's a "precedent" for such decisions, referencing instances like the late Queen bestowing Gatcombe Park on Anne, Sunninghill Park on Andrew, and Bagshot Park on Edward.

Chad Michael Murray embraces his teen heartthrob legacy: ‘It's a blessing'

The American actor, 43, rose to fame in the early 2000s, appearing in TV series such as Gilmore Girls and Dawson's Creek, before landing the lead role in the teenage drama series One Tree Hill. Murray, who also starred in the 2003 comedy film Freaky Friday alongside Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis, gained a reputation as a heartthrob among teenage girls during this era. The father–of-three, who is reprising his role as Jake, Lohan's character Anna's former love interest, in Freakier Friday, says he feels very fortunate to have had such an impact on a generation. 'I'm very, very blessed, very fortunate and lucky to be a part of a lot of really great movies and great stories that have affected a generation,' Murray told the PA news agency. 'That's really the only reason to be an actor for me. I just wanted to make people happy.' Murray, who grew up in a single father household in Buffalo, New York, says he moved to Hollywood, when he was 18 years old to pursue a career in acting. 'I think I moved there in September 1999 and I was with Warner Brothers by January 2000,' he said. Freakier Friday sees Lohan and Curtis return to their roles as mother and daughter, 22 years after the first film was released. The 2003 film saw Tess Coleman (Curtis) and musician Anna (Lohan) trade places, after reading fortune cookies at a Chinese restaurant. The story picks up with Lohan's character, Anna, now a mother to a teenage daughter of her own and a soon-to-be stepmother. In the sequel, Anna's daughter Harper, played by Julia Butters and her soon-to-be stepdaughter Lily Davies, portrayed by Sophia Hammons, join Anna and her mother Tess in a wild, quadruple body swap. Reflecting on returning for the sequel, Murray said they had to work out how his character would realistically fit into the updated story. 'It's a house of cards, you move one piece and the whole thing kind of crashes down with four people switching bodies. So we had to be really careful and deliberate with the choices we made,' he said. 'I went straight into analytics mode. We had to flesh out who Jake has been over the last 22 years. What's he been up to? Where's he gone? What's the funniest choice here? And that's where we went. Then it just became exciting from there.' Murray added: 'My joking sales pitch for this film has been, this movie will make you live longer as it reduces cortisol levels. 'If this is the type of content I do for the rest of my life as an actor I'm done, I'm happy, I'm in.' The 2003 film was based on the 1972 novel by Mary Rodgers, which was previously turned into a 1976 movie starring Jodie Foster and Barbara Harris. Freakier Friday opens in UK cinemas on Friday, August 8.

Sydney Chandler describes experience on the Alien: Earth TV series as ‘a joy'

The 29-year-old American actress plays Wendy, a humanoid robot with human consciousness, in Emmy-winning producer Noah Hawley's new series based on the acclaimed franchise. The Alien franchise began with Sir Ridley Scott's 1979 film starring Sigourney Weaver as warrant officer Ellen Ripley, who takes on an extra-terrestrial lifeform called the Xenomorph. The new eight-episode series sees Wendy and a group of tactical soldiers make a discovery that puts them face-to-face with the planet's greatest threat. Chandler, who starred in Olivia Wilde's psychological thriller Don't Worry Darling and Danny Boyle's miniseries Pistol, about the Sex Pistols, said she was lucky to have such a supportive cast for her first lead role. 'I felt like every day I was showing up to an incredible acting class,' Chandler told the PA news agency. 'I'm new to this game, and so it was just a joy to be able to work with such a supportive and such a giving cast who were there to play.' Speaking of her character, she said: 'There's so many layers to her and she's just a juicy character to jump into. 'I did as much prep as you can for a character, there's no research you could do. 'I really found my character once I started working off everybody.' Alien: Earth is set in the year 2120, when the Earth is governed by five corporations: Prodigy, Weyland-Yutani, Lynch, Dynamic and Threshold. In this corporate era, cyborgs and synthetics, which are humanoid robots with artificial intelligence, exist alongside humans, but the world is changed when the founder of the Prodigy corporation unlocks a technological advance: hybrids (humanoid robots infused with human consciousness). Wendy, the first hybrid prototype, marks a new advance in the race for immortality and after Weyland-Yutani's spaceship collides into Prodigy City, Wendy and the other hybrids encounter new and terrifying life forms. The cast includes Deadwood actor Timothy Olyphant as Kirsh, Black Mirror star Alex Lawther as Hermit, Mary And George's Samuel Blenkin as Boy Kavalier, Guerrilla actor Babou Ceesay as Morrow and Bottom star Adrian Edmondson as Atom Eins. Blenkin said the filming experience was made a lot easier due to Hawley's practical approach to special effects. 'We were lucky on this show because we're not doing much acting with tennis balls or anything like that that you do in a show where there's a lot of CGI,' the 29-year-old actor explained. 'Noah was really intent upon everything being practical. 'There's no acting required when Cameron, the vegan New Zealander, is wearing a Xenomorph suit and is leering over you and drooling, and it's animatronic and it's real. 'It was just a joy. We turn into kids on those sets.' Hawley, who is best known for creating the Fargo TV series, said the 'imperfections of reality are scarier than the sort of bloodlessness of computer-generated images'. 'All I'm trying to do is create the same feelings that you had when you watched Ridley's film or James Cameron's film,' the 57-year-old writer and director explained. 'Some of that we're able to achieve in new ways, but some of it is literally going back to the original cinema of optical illusions.' Alien: Earth will launch on Disney+ on August 13.
