NATYA VRIKSHA's World Dance Day festival features an impressive line-up of artistes
'World Dance Day is a moment to pause and celebrate what dance brings into our lives, not just technique or tradition, but emotion, truth and transformation. This festival is our offering to the art, and to the young dancers who will carry it forward,' says Geeta Chandran.
What sets this festival apart is its inclusive embrace of classical, contemporary and experimental dance forms. This year's line-up includes performances by Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Kuchipudi and Odissi artistes.
Each day, the festival opens with a workshop 'Movement and Dance Aesthetics', to be conducted by dancer and choreographer, Tanusree Shankar. Over the course of two days, there will be a witty theatrical retelling of an ancient story, scripted and performed by Ramaa Bharadvaj as well as a lecture by Ashok Vajpeyi on how dance, while rooted in the present, opens portals to imagination, memory and transcendence. There will also be performances by Madhura Bhrushundi (Bharatanatyam), Dheerendra Tiwari (Kathak), Abhinaya Nagajothy (Kuchipudi) and Shashwati Garai Ghosh (Odissi).
Another key highlight is the conferment of the sixth NATYA VRIKSHA Lifetime Achievement Award to SPIC MACAY and its founder Kiran Seth, in recognition of their tireless efforts in preserving and promoting India's cultural heritage amongst youth. 'This honour is not mine alone — it belongs to every student who has sat in awe before an artiste, to every volunteer who has given their time to SPIC MACAY, and to every institution that believes in the power of the arts to shape minds and lives,' said Kiran Seth.
The World Dance Day Festival 2025 will take place on 26th and 27th April at India International Centre, New Delhi.

Vijayawada: Arunodaya Kala Samithi commemorated the 7th edition of its cherished Gurupujotsav on Sunday evening, enveloping the premises of Sri Ghantasala Venkateswara Rao Government Music and Dance College in an aura of spirituality, tradition, and artistic excellence. The evening commenced with Jyothi Prajwalana before the idol of Lord Nataraja, setting an auspicious tone for the celebrations. Under the guidance of Natya Guru Manzoosha Pakki, the stage was transformed into a sacred space of rhythm and devotion through a series of classical dance performances. The disciples of Arunodaya Kala Samithi enthralled the audience with a well-curated Kuchipudi recital, beginning with a soulful Ganesh Bhajan, followed by Tandava Nruthyakari, Brahmanjali, Dasavathara Shabdam, Ashtalakshmi Stotram, Tarangam, and Paras Thillana. Each piece reflected not only the technical rigor but also the spiritual essence of the art form. Adding to the diversity of the evening were Bharatanatyam presentations, including Tisra Alarippu and Vasantha Jathiswaram, showcasing the students' grace and disciplined training across classical forms. Post the performances, the Sabhakaryakramam began with Guru Vandanam, where students and guests paid heartfelt tributes to the guru. Madhurakavi Valiveti, the guest of honour, applauded Guru Manzoosha Pakki's tireless contribution to classical arts, describing her choreography of the Ashtalakshmi Stotram as 'distinctive and deserving of recognition.' Kandula Lakshmi Narsamma, Principal of GVR College of Music and Dance, praised the guru's unwavering dedication and offered a melodious tribute in song. Other distinguished speakers, including Madhavi Latha, Secretary of Asha Jyothi Foundation, and Ramaa Gayatri Karanam, Telugu teacher at DPS, expressed deep appreciation for both the guru and her devoted disciples. Cycles of time embellished
Traditions are like rivers, they always find a way to keep flowing. Over the ages, Kathak has demonstrated malleability like no other tradition and the credit for this also goes to the practitioners who have shown grit and grace in times of adversities. This has evolved Kathak and it has freed it also from many shackles of its original construct. I reached out to Vidha Lal, a ravishing Kathak dancer, to learn more on how a presentation of Kathak can be best enjoyed. Our conversations begins with Vidha, reminiscing on some of her own experiences of the dance form. 'My earliest memory of Kathak was when my father had taken me to a Birla temple where I saw a group presentation by Smt Uma Sharma. I was only six when I witnessed the performance, but it had a lasting impact on me. It was magical! While as a six-year-old the costumes created the necessary first impression, but today if I were to recollect and analyse why that presentation of Kathak captivated me, then I would attribute it to the synchronised movements of the dancers. At that time, I could never tell one from the other; everyone looked the same, everyone danced well,' she recalls.
