Live Aid Founder Corrects 'Bohemian Rhapsody' Mistake, Says It Was Actually David Bowie Who Caused Surge of Donations

Bob Geldof opened up about Live Aid and its impact 40 years later in a new interview
Geldof said that contrary to popular belief, it was David Bowie's performance that got donations flooding in, not Freddie Mercury's with Queen
The Live Aid concert ultimately raised more than $140 million for EthiopiaBob Geldof is clearing up what actually happened at Live Aid.
Geldof, 73, spoke to The New York Times for an article published July 13 in honor of the 40th anniversary of Live Aid. Geldof was inspired to organize the blockbuster concert, which was held simultaneously at Wembley Stadium in London and John F. Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia, after he watched a 1984 BBC report about the famine in Ethiopia.
Geldof, lead singer of the Irish rock band the Boomtown Rats, was inspired to find ways to help. That December, he organized the Band Aid single "Do They Know It's Christmas?" The next summer, he and Scottish singer Midge Ure organized the Live Aid concerts, with a lineup that included The Beach Boys, Patti LaBelle, Hall and Oates, Sade, Sting, Phil Collins, U2, The Who, Elton John, Paul McCartney, Joan Baez, Crosby, Stills and Nash, and many more.
One of the performances that's lived the longest in the popular imagination was the set by Queen, fronted by the late Freddie Mercury in a now-iconic white tank top and light-washed jeans. The 2018 Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody dramatized their performance and showed donations skyrocketing after they performed.
But Geldof told The Times that the understanding of events in the movie, where donations only started flowing because of that performance, wasn't actually true. 'The movie isn't right. Queen were completely, utterly brilliant. But the telephone lines collapsed after David Bowie performed,' he said. Bowie, who died in 2016 at 69, performed right after Queen.
Geldof explained that the CBC had made a report about Ethiopia, and there were outtakes that weren't broadcast because the visual images were 'just so appalling' and worse than what the BBC had shown. When Geldof went to talk to Bowie about his set for the show, he remembered, 'Before we started talking about the songs, I said, 'Look at this thing,' and I put it on.'
'David was crying and said he would cut a song from his set to show the CBC report instead. It's an extraordinary moment during the concert, because at the end of 'Heroes,' which the crowd were all singing, he quietly introduces the clip and asks people to send their money in,' Geldof said. 'It was like a slap in the face.'
'Bowie brought the house down. That was the key moment,' he said.
Of course, the work done that day by Mercury, who died in 1991 at 45, remains elemental. 'They just nailed it,' Queen roadie Peter Hince told PEOPLE in 2019. 'I think it was the right time. The audience had to sit through bands who maybe weren't as exciting as Queen were. More laid back. And I thought they needed a kind of shot in the arm, you know? Queen came on and just ripped the place up.'

The Live Aid concert was ultimately watched by 1.5 billion people in more than 150 countries and would go on to raise more than $140 million. 'Do They Know It's Christmas?' raised about $9 million and inspired Harry Belafonte to organize 'We Are the World,' which became the fastest-selling single in history and raised more than $80 million.

LiveNation shared the planned set times for tonight's concert. According to the company, Mike Dean will perform from 7:20 p.m. to 8:10 p.m. The Weeknd is set to take the stage at 8:40 p.m. — minus any possible delays caused by any backstage sipping of his new Nespresso collaboration brew — through to 11 p.m. UPDATE: The B.C. Place website has a full list of rules and regulations regarding what you can and can't bring into The Weeknd concert. Concert goers are recommended to have their tickets downloaded on their mobile device or Ticketmaster app and ready to scan at the gate for quick entry. Bags are restricted at B.C. Place. The venue has a 'clear bag policy' that sees the size of bag restricted to the below dimensions: Bags no larger than 6.5' x 8.5' Clear plastic bag (including clear plastic freezer bags) no larger than 12' x 12' x 6' Large bags can be checked at the venue for a fee of $10 per piece. This service is offered on a first-come-first-serve basis. Check the venue website for a full list of restricted items and recommendations. Tickets are available for the Vancouver concert via A quick search on the site and app Tuesday morning yielded a short wait in a digital waiting room. Plenty of pairs of tickets showed as available, both via verified resale and direct sale, with prices ranging from around $78.40 to $249.90 (including taxes and fees). American rapper Mike Dean is the opening act for the two Vancouver shows. Playboi Carti, who collaborated with The Weeknd on the song Timeless, is no longer on the B.C. Place bill. The news was released in a statement from the After Hours Til Dawn account on X in the early morning hours on July 15. 'Playboi Carti will NOT be joining The Weeknd on the Vancouver shows of the #AfterHoursTilDawnTour. Ticketmaster changed the name of the Vancouver shows to 'The After Hours Til Dawn Tour with Mike Dean'. As of now all other Canada shows still show Carti as part of the event.' In a statement from B.C. Place, the venue confirmed the change, adding that Carti was dropped from the concerts 'due to border crossing issues.' Dean has co-written a number of popular tracks by The Weeknd, including Double Fantasy, Popular, Jealous Guy and others. His set is averaging 112 songs from across his career. Dean appeared with The Weeknd at his headlining set at Coachella in 2022. Hurry Up Tomorrow was released on Jan. 31, 2025. The album is considered the final instalment in a trilogy that began with 2020's After Hours and 2022's Dawn FM. The Weeknd, Toronto-born Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, has teased that this could be the final tour as his namesake alter ego. Hurry Up Tomorrow is the artist's sixth full-length album and was accompanied by a companion film of the same title. Directed by Trey Edward Shults, the movie starring The Weeknd, Jenny Ortega (Wednesday) and Barry Keoghan (Saltburn) was poorly reviewed, with a 15 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. (Tomatometer ratings of less than 60 per cent are considered 'rotten.') The Weeknd's set list is averaging 35 songs on the After Hours 'til. Dawn tour and features a selection of songs drawn from across his multiplatinum career. How Do I Make You Love Me? from Dawn FM is the most-performed song on the tour so far. The artist is also dropping a number of covers in the show, including Future's Low Life, Rosalía's La Fama and the Kendrick Lamar collaboration Pray for Me. To keep things on equal footing, he is also performing Drake's Crew Love. Whether he is continuing to include Ye's Hurricane and Diddy's Another One of Me will remain to be heard at the B.C. Place shows. The After Hours 'til. Dawn tour has been going since 2022. The Aug. 23, 2022, concert at B.C. Place was well-reviewed in The Vancouver Sun, noting the following: 'It's a big jump from Rogers Arena to B.C. Place and The Weeknd is one of those rare artists to make it. There isn't another Canadian act of the moment touring playing 50,000-plus seat arenas. 'The Toronto singer's mix of futuristic R&B, pure new wave and dance pop has completely captured contemporary music at the moment and last night the artist born Abel Makkonen Tesfaye showed off his Grammy-winning live chops to an adoring audience. 'Naturally, the stage set up for the After Hours 'til. Dawn Tour is a lavish one with no shortage of bells, whistles, explosions and more.' Expect more of the same from this edition of the tour. Expect The Weeknd to sell well for both of the Vancouver concerts, which means around 50,000 people attending each night. Be sure to give yourself ample time to get into the venue, find you seating and so on. Read our guide on what to know about B.C. Place. sderdeyn@ Review: The Weeknd After Hours 'til. George Santos Has Truly WTF Response To Kevin Spacey's Call To Release Epstein Files

Actor Kevin Spacey asked on Tuesday that the Epstein files be released because 'the truth can't come soon enough,' and former lawmaker George Santos felt obliged to offer his two cents. Spacey took to X and publicly asked someone, anyone, to 'release the Epstein files. All of them. For those of us with nothing to fear, the truth can't come soon enough.' He added, 'I hate to make this about me — but the media already has.' Although Spacey's name does appear in unsealed documents related to the deceased financier Jeffrey Epstein, he hasn't been accused of helping facilitate Epstein's alleged child sex trafficking ring. The actor was accused of molesting a then-14-year-old actor in 1986, but he was found not liable by a New York jury in 2022. Spacey was also acquitted in London in 2023 on nine charges of sexual assault involving four theater actors. Release the Epstein files. All of them. For those of us with nothing to fear, the truth can't come soon enough. I hate to make this about me — but the media already has. — Kevin Spacey (@KevinSpacey) July 15, 2025 For some reason, Santos, a former U.S. representative now preparing to serve a seven-year sentence for federal wire fraud and aggravated identity theft, felt obliged to comment on Spacey's post. The former Republican lawmaker also used a homophobic slur in referring to Spacey, even though Santos is himself openly gay. Says the sexual predator!Sit the fuck down homo! 🙄💅🏻 — George Santos (@MrSantosNY) July 15, 2025 Many people on social media were shocked and confused by Santos' vitriol. One person advised the convicted former representative, 'You should probably sit this one out!' Uhmmmm sir, only one of you is a convicted felon who's going to prison, and it wasn't the award winning actor. You should probably sit this one out! — This oughta be good!! (@Djlfjr) July 15, 2025 Wow. The most savage post ever. Homo 😂 — Tom Schooley (@schooleyD) July 15, 2025 — Asclepius (@Beansthecat_) July 15, 2025 Santos is a man on the edge. Nothing left to lose. I love it! Only up from here buddy. — Raemi Eagle-Glenn (@RaemiEagle) July 15, 2025 Bro didn't you lie about like 22 things, get caught immediately, and promptly removed? — Matt (@RbiTriples) July 15, 2025 Kevin Spacey Says Release Epstein Files: 'Nothing To Fear' Trump Says Comey, Biden And Obama 'Made Up' The Epstein Files Congressman Writes Song, 'Release The Epstein Files,' And, Yeah, It's Cringe CNN Host Swats Down Republican's Epstein 'Nonsense' Talk With Searing Reality Check
