Grand celestial wedding of goddess Meenakshi and lord Sundareswarar held in Madurai

MADURAI: Amid thousands of devotees, the celestial wedding of Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar was held at the Thirukalyanam Mandapam at the Arulmigu Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple in Madurai on Thursday.
Following the traditional rituals by the bhattars, the celestial wedding took place between 8:35 am and 8:59 am in Mithuna Lagna, with priests chanting the Vedas. The Thirukalyanam ritual was held on a special stage set at the junction of North-West Aadi Street within the temple premises.
Earlier, the ceremonies began at 4 am with Odhuvamurthigal singing 'Thirumurai'. The procession of deities, Lord Pavala Kanivai Perumal and Lord Subramaniya Swamy from the Thiruparangundram Temple, arrived at the temple by 6 am.
Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar were brought to the Thirukalyanam Mandapam by 8:15 am. Adorned in traditional green attire and gem-embedded ornaments and armour, Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar were brought to the Mandapam following a procession.
The deities will remain in the Thirukalyanam Mandapam for devotees to have darshan. The traditional wedding feast for the Meenakshi Thirukalyanam was arranged at Sethupathi School.
Being the major event of the ongoing Chithirai Festival, the temple car procession is scheduled to be held at the Meenakshi Temple on Friday (May 9) following the Thirukalyanam ritual.
Thousands of devotees gathered at the Thirukalyanam Mandapam to witness the ritual inside the temple.
State ministers P Moorthy and Palanivel Thiaga Rajan, along with other dignitaries from Madurai, were present at the temple to participate in the event. A large number of devotees thronged the Chithirai streets around the temple and watched the entire ritual through LED screens placed around the temple.
Police were stationed at all entry points to regulate crowd movement at the Meenakshi Temple. Detailed security arrangements were made in and around the temple in view of the festival.
Philanthropists were seen distributing Annadhanam around the temple specially for the festival. Despite the scorching summer heat, devotees continued to flock to the temple on Thursday. They were seen gathering under shades as the temperature began to rise in the morning hours.
"Since the seating inside the Thirukalyanam Mandapam is limited, we had to wait outside the temple and watch the Thirukalyanam ritual through the LED screens. As the celestial wedding took place at the same time as per tradition, married women who had gathered around the Meenakshi Temple changed their mangalsutra during the occasion," said S Haritha, a devotee who arrived at the temple to take part in the Meenakshi Thirukalyanam.

Steps involved in worship

Lord Narasimha protected His devotee, Prahalada, and Rama protected the people of Ayodhya, in addition to saving the rishis from the clutches of the demons, and Sri Krishna handed over the Bhagavad Gita — a treasure trove containing the essential concepts and principles that people should follow to lead a righteous life. As Lord Ranganatha in 'Archa' form, He extends His blessings to those who worship Him. His dwelling abode, Srirangam, is called Bhuloka Vaikuntam. The first syllable of the Vedas, 'OM', is also called 'pranava', and Lord Ranganatha's temple vimana is known as the 'Pranavakara Vimanam'. It has four kalasas symbolising the four Vedas. Srirangam is the first of the 108 Vaishnava divya desa kshetras. It is believed that Lord Ranganatha's divine power is present in all the deities of other kshetras. Valayappettai Ramachariar said in a discourse that Swami Vedanta Desika followed the lines of Thiruppanazhwar in worshipping Lord Ranganatha. The Azhwar composed 'Amalanadhipiran' in praise of the Lord and worshipped Him starting from the divine feet to the head. Swami Vedanta Desika composed 'Bhagavad Dhyana Sopanam,' in which he extolled the various qualities of the Lord. The Acharya tells us how to worship the Lord. 'Sopanam' refers to steps. Dhyanam relates to worship. The Acharya enjoyed worshipping the Lord's divine body step by step from the feet to the head. The smiling face and the lotus eyes of the Lord attract the devotees, who feel that their eyes refuse to take away from enjoying the glimpse of God. People are caged in a prison-like body, and by worshipping Lord Ranganatha, they can attain liberation. The divine radiance of the Lord removes our miseries. The works of Swami Vedanta Desika serve as a guide to humanity. He pleads on our behalf to include us in rendering divine service to the Lord.

Arohara echoes as Thirupparankundram unites thousands in worship

Madurai: Thousands of devotees witnessed the consecration (Kumbabishekam) of the Arulmigu Subramaniaswamy Temple at Thirupparankundram, one of the six abodes (Arupadai Veedu) of Lord Murugan, on Monday morning. The rituals began at 5 am, with sacred kalasams taken in procession from the yagasalai to the temple vimanas. By 5.31 am, priests poured sanctified water on nine golden kalasams — seven on the 125-ft Rajagopuram, and one each on the Vallabha Ganapathi and Govardhanambigai Ambal vimanas — marking the formal culmination of the consecration. Theertham was then sprayed on devotees using drones and mounted sprayers. More than 200 Shivaacharyars conducted the rituals, which commenced on July 10 and continued for five days. A total of 75 yaga kundams were set up at the Valli Devasena Mandapam, with Vedic chants and Tamil hymns, including Thevaram, Thiruppugazh, and Kandar Anuboothi, recited by over 85 odhuvars, including women, during the concluding rituals on Sunday. Twenty-seven LED screens were placed around the temple for live telecast. Drinking water booths, ambulances, fire service vehicles, and medical camps were stationed in the vicinity for the devotees. The Rajagopuram was refurbished at a cost of ₹70 lakh funded by donors, while the total renovation cost was estimated at ₹2.44 crore. As part of the works, seven new golden kalasams were installed on the Rajagopuram and one each on the Ambal and Vinayakar sannidhis. The towers were painted in panchavarnam (five traditional colours) and treated with kalkam, a mixture of 55 herbal ingredients. On Sunday night, the idols of Meenakshi and Sundareswarar from the Meenakshi Amman Temple were brought in procession and received at the 16-pillar mandapam in Thirupparankundram early Monday. Meenakshi Temple was closed for darshan on Monday as the presiding deities were away. Shops and businesses surrounding the temple marked the occasion with electric decorations. A new LED-lit 'Vel' (spear) was installed atop the gopuram, and laser lighting illuminated the temple towers during the celebrations. The event was held amid tight security and elaborate arrangements. Around 3,000 police personnel were deployed under the supervision of City Police Commissioner J Loganathan. Traffic diversions were enforced across Thirupparankundram Taluk to manage the crowd. Speaking to reporters, HR&CE minister P K Sekar Babu said the consecration was conducted in line with Tamil Agamic traditions and reflected the Dravidian model's commitment to temple revival and heritage preservation. "Under the leadership of chief minister M K Stalin, kumbabishekam has been performed at 3,347 temples across Tamil Nadu so far, including 124 Murugan temples since this government took office," he said. He urged devotees to be patient and make use of the ongoing 48-day mandala abhishekam period for darshan. "The spiritual merit extends far beyond today's event. We ask devotees to avoid unnecessary rush and plan visits accordingly," he said. He also emphasized that the event transcended politics and religion, sending a message of unity. "Thirupparankundram is a model of harmony where people of all castes and faiths coexist peacefully," he added. Commercial taxes minister P Moorthy, Thirupparankundram MLA Rajan Chellappa, state BJP president Nainar Nagenthiran, Madurai collector K J Praveen Kumar, and Madurai Corporation commissioner Chithra Vijayan also participated. Praising Rama's qualities

Vedanta Desika's Sanskrit work Raghuveeragadyam is a work in praise of Lord Rama. Praising Lord Rama's qualities as seen in the Bala Kanda of Valmiki Ramayana, Vedanta Desika says Lord Narayana took the Rama avatara because the celestials wanted to be saved from Dasavadana (ten-faced Ravana). Desika then speaks of the greatness of the family in which Rama was born, elaborated T.N. Aravamuda Thathachariar in a discourse. Rama was born in Dinakara kula, says Desika, in a reference to the illustrious Surya Vamsa to which Lord Rama's ancestors belonged. By being born the son of king Dasaratha, Lord Rama saved the latter from the third debt. Every man has three debts — a debt to sages, a debt to the devas and a debt to his ancestors. While Dasaratha, through the study of Vedas and performance of yagas, had taken care of the first two debts, the third debt was taken care of only when Rama was born. Rama would continue to do whatever was needed for the manes of the Ikshvaku family, and thus Dasaratha no longer had to worry about his debt to his ancestors. Thus, Rama settled Dasaratha's third debt. Vedanta Desika also talks of the Ahalya episode. He says Ahalya was rid of her curse by Rama, and restored to her original form, and went on to worship Rama. Desika goes on to praise the mighty shoulders of Rama, which made the breaking of the Siva Dhanus in Janaka's court very easy. What is impossible for others is just child's play to Rama. Rama's eyes stole the beauty of lotuses, which open up when they see their friend, the Sun. Desika, in his Raghuveera Gadyam, praises Rama's qualities as shown by Valmiki in each kanda. With a description of Parasurama's pride being crushed by Rama, Desika concludes his salutations to Rama's qualities as seen in the Bala Kanda.
