
The Next Planet Parade Takes Place at the End of August. Here's How to See It
The six planets sharing the sky will be Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune and Uranus. Mars will technically be there at the beginning of the night, but it dips below the horizon right after sunset, so it won't be visible when all of the others are. Of those, Mercury, Venus and Jupiter will be visible to the naked eye, while the others will require high-powered binoculars or, preferably, a telescope.
Even though they're spread out across the eastern and southern skies, the planets pair up with this one, making many of them pretty easy to find if you know what to look for. From east to west, here's where each one will be.

Saturn and Neptune - These two are right next to each other and will be sitting between the Pisces and Cetus constellations in the southern skies. Neptune will be closer to Pisces while Saturn will be closer to Cetus.
Since it takes a long time for planets to move through the night sky, Aug. 20 is the starting point, and it'll run through the rest of the month. Once September hits, Mercury will be too close to the sun, which will obscure it. From that point, there will be a five-planet parade for a while until Venus sinks below the horizon in early October. So, in all, you'll have a chance to see at least five planets for over a month.
Will the planet parade be visible from my region?
Yes. We double checked Stellarium's sky map from a variety of locations across the country, and everything above will be applicable everywhere in the continental US. Per Starwalk, the parade will also be visible in other parts of the world after the following dates for about the same amount of time (one to two weeks).

The planets will move based on date, though. The above locations are where they'll be around Aug. 20, but if you're looking a week or so later, they'll be in the same general area, but will shift to a slightly different part of the sky.
Will I need any special equipment?
Yes. Neptune and Uranus, especially, will require some sort of magnification to see. We recommend a telescope, but high-powered binoculars may work if the sky is dark enough. Saturn is also difficult to see without magnification, so you'll want it for that too. Jupiter, Venus, and Mercury should be visible on their own with the naked eye.
We also recommend taking a trip out to the country, as light pollution from suburbs and cities can make it even more difficult to see Neptune and Uranus. The moon will be out as well, which may make Venus, Jupiter, and Mercury harder to see. Other factors like weather may also make it more difficult to see all of them. If you're lucky, you may see a few shooting stars at the tail end of Perseids as well.

Scientists stunned by 'lethal' discovery made while studying popular swamp: 'We wonder what else is being affected' Although swamps have garnered a reputation for being formidable locations with dangerous species and spooky visuals, they play a pivotal role in an ecosystem. That is why a recent discovery made in some swamps of Georgia and South Carolina has researchers worried. What's happening? According to a recent study published in Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry, elevated levels of mercury have been detected in several swamps throughout the Deep South. The discovery was made when a team of researchers was conducting a study on alligators in the region. They selected Jekyll Island and the Okefenokee Swamp in Georgia as well as the Yawkey Wildlife Center in South Carolina as their primary locations. While speaking to UGA Today, Kristen Zemaitis, lead author of the study and a graduate of the University of Georgia, noted the importance of alligators. "Alligators are very ancient creatures, and we can look at them in these areas as an indicator of what else might be happening in the ecosystem," Zemaitis said. "Studying them can relate to many different things in the food web." This is why the team of researchers was stunned when they began measuring mercury levels at the three research sites. Mercury exists naturally in the Earth's crust and can be released into the environment through natural processes. However, as noted in the study, mercury is a "potent neurotoxin, commonly assessed in contaminant body burdens." Why are elevated levels of mercury in swamps important? Oftentimes, human activities such as industrial pollution and urbanization can result in regional "hot spots" with elevated mercury concentrations. With this in mind, the research team spent several months analyzing blood samples from more than 100 alligators across the Okefenokee Swamp, Jekyll Island, and the Yawkey Wildlife Center. Their findings revealed that mercury concentrations were around eight times higher in alligators inhabiting the Okefenokee Swamp than at any of the other sites. "That's one of the results from the study that was most striking to me," said Jeb Byers, co-author of the study. "Mercury is a neurotoxin that is very lethal to organisms. If it builds up, it moves through the food web and creates the perfect storm. That's what we have in the Okefenokee," added Byers, a UGA professor. The researchers determined that mercury is perhaps moving up through the food chain at a faster rate than previously thought. When mercury enters marine environments from various sources, it can be absorbed by small organisms in the food chain. As larger species eat these smaller organisms, it can lead to higher levels in larger predators, such as alligators. What's being done about these high levels of mercury? High levels of mercury can prove to be problematic for local communities that rely on fishing industries for their food supply. "Mercury contamination can be a high concern for the people who can be consuming a lot of fish or game species from the rivers, swamps or oceans that have high mercury," Zemaitis noted. While the study has revealed alarming results, Zemaitis said that this can potentially help us learn more about which species are most affected in our environment. "Now that we know this about one of the apex predators in these systems, we wonder what else is being affected?" added Zemaitis. The researcher explained that further studies could better explain where the excess mercury levels are coming from and how prominent the neurotoxin is in the ecosystem. How to watch two meteor showers peak together in late July
WASHINGTON (AP) — It's almost time for summer's meteor shower duet. The Southern Delta Aquariid and the Alpha Capricornid meteor showers peak at the same time — in the early morning of July 30. Without too much interference from moonlight — the waxing moon will be only about a quarter full — the meteors should appear bright and clear in regions away from city lights. With each shower expected to produce up to a dozen visible meteors per hour under dark skies, the doubleheader means the total number of meteors 'do add up,' said Thaddeus LaCoursiere, planetarium program coordinator at the Bell Museum in St. Paul, Minnesota. 'Look for flashes of light in the night sky,' he said, adding that both are 'very nice classic meteor showers.' The Alpha Capricornids — produced by slower-moving meteors — may have tails that linger slightly longer in the sky, said Nick Moskovitz of the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona. Viewing of each shower lasts through August 12. What is a meteor shower? As the Earth orbits the sun, several times a year it passes through debris left by passing comets and sometimes asteroids. The source of the Delta Aquariids is debris from comet 96P/Machholz. The Alpha Capricornids stem from the comet 169P/NEAT. When these fast-moving space rocks enter Earth's atmosphere, the debris encounters new resistance from the air and becomes very hot, eventually burning up. Sometimes the surrounding air glows briefly, leaving behind a fiery tail — the end of a 'shooting star.' You don't need special equipment to see the various meteor showers that flash across annually, just a spot away from city lights. How to view a meteor shower The best time to watch a meteor shower is in the early predawn hours when the moon is low in the sky. Competing sources of light — such as a bright moon or artificial glow — are the main obstacles to a clear view of meteors. Cloudless nights when the moon wanes smallest are optimal viewing opportunities. And keep looking up, not down. Your eyes will be better adapted to spot shooting stars if you aren't checking your phone. When is the next meteor shower? MCED Tests in Primary Care: Proceed With Caution
Hi, everyone. I'm Dr Kenny Lin. I am a family physician and associate director of the Lancaster General Hospital Family Medicine Residency, and I blog at Common Sense Family Doctor. Kenneth W. Lin, MD, MPH In the past decade or so that I have been giving lectures on cancer screening at family medicine review courses, not much has changed. We screen for breast, cervical, and colorectal cancer in large numbers of people. We screen for lung cancer in current or past smokers over 50 years of age with at least a 20 pack-year history. We discuss the potential benefits and harms of screening for prostate cancer with older males. But these five cancer types represent a distinct minority of cancers. A 2022 study estimated that only 1 in 7 diagnosed cancer cases in the United States are caught by any of these screening tests, and 57% of cancers have no recommended screening tests, meaning that they are usually not detected until advanced stages. For the past few years, Grail has been selling a blood test that aims to fill the early detection gap by detecting cell-free DNA signals associated with cancer. At $949 per test, the Galleri test is advertised as being able to detect more than 50 cancer types in adults aged 50 years or older. Other companies are developing similar tests. If they haven't already, family physicians will soon be asked to order multicancer early detection (MCED) tests for patients or act on their results. So, what do we know about their benefits and harms? And what remains uncertain? A systematic review published in May 2025 by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality found that the evidence for MCED tests consists mostly of diagnostic accuracy studies with suboptimal designs. A few prospective studies have shown that the tests are highly specific but have relatively low sensitivity for early-stage cancers. There is little data on harms such as false alarms, incidental findings, and unnecessary diagnostic procedures and treatments; in one study, patient-reported anxiety associated with a positive MCED result was small and returned to baseline by 12 months, regardless of whether cancer was confirmed. To be effective, MCED tests must accurately detect cancer in asymptomatic people at stages early enough to decrease harm (by subjecting patients to less toxic cancer therapy) or increase benefits (by allowing patients to live longer or better). Already under-resourced primary care practices would need to develop new workflows to work up patients with positive tests and determine when to refer them to oncologists. In a JAMA Internal Medicine Special Communication, screening experts argued that since MCED screening 'would entail tremendous costs and potentially substantial harms", it should not be implemented until a randomized trial reports it reduces all-cause mortality. Others feel that a trial showing fewer cancer-related deaths, such as one being planned by the National Cancer Institute, would be sufficient. An ongoing trial of Galleri in more than 140,000 UK National Health Service patients expects to report effects on cancer stage-shift (a reduction in late stage cancer diagnoses) as early as next year, though it appears to have failed to meet criteria for early indications of benefit. Recognizing that diffusion of MCED tests into practice is outpacing the evidence, the American Cancer Society published a consensus statement to guide primary care clinicians. Important points include communicating uncertainty about benefits and harms, emphasizing that patients with negative results should continue to have all screenings recommended by the US Preventive Services Task Force, and first evaluating patients with positive results for cancer at the predicted tissue of origin (eg, mammography for breast cancer), then ordering total body PET-CT scans if the tissue of origin is unknown or the initial workup is unrevealing.
