Zohran Mamdani wants to abolish billionaires. He might as well abolish New York

Telegraph01-07-2025
Perhaps he will hunt them down at the tables of Masa, where sushi can go for almost $1,000 a head. Or maybe he'll track them to the bar at the Plaza hotel, or else evict them from their penthouses overlooking Central Park. It is not yet clear how the radical Democrat nominee for mayor of New York, Zohran Mamdani, intends to act on his apparent desire to cleanse the city of billionaires if he wins power. But one point is surely clear. If he succeeds, he will find it impossible to pay for almost any of his expensive promises. And what might be termed the Mamdani Fallacy will be painfully exposed.
Mamdani certainly does not mince his words. During a TV interview, he argued that nobody should have 10 zeroes or more on their bank statement: 'I don't think that we should have billionaires because, frankly, it is so much money in a moment of such inequality, and ultimately, what we need more of is equality across our city and across our state and across our country.'
Of course this is a perfectly legitimate point of view for someone who describes himself as a socialist. Most of the major Left-wing thinkers of the last couple of hundred years have staked out very similar positions.
And yet there is a catch. While he wants the billionaire class to be abolished, he also effectively wants them to pay for all his expensive campaign pledges. He wants free childcare right across the city, government-run grocery stores to lower the cost of food, and rent controls and subsidies to reduce the price of somewhere to live.
How is it all going to be paid for? With higher taxes on the rich apparently, including an extra 2 per cent city income tax, on top of federal and state taxes, for anyone earning more than $1 million a year, and a higher rate of corporate tax as well. While this would also punish many of the merely wealthy, the reality of the income distribution is that he would be relying on large sums being raised from New York billionaires, too.
So Mamdani wants to have his billionaire cake and eat it. The plutocrats should be wiped out, but at the same time they should cheerfully pay extra taxes to fund extravagant social programmes. It is a view that is increasingly common across the Western world. In Britain, the governing Labour Party both wants to get rid of non-doms (as wealthy foreigners with a special tax exempt deal are known), while also raising billions in extra taxes from the rich. In France the radical Left wants greater equality, but it also wants wealth taxes to pay for some of the world's most generous social benefits. The message is always the same. The rich are to be destroyed, but also pay for everything.
We all know what will happen. Mamdani will get half of what he is arguing for. The rich will indeed be driven out of New York. After all, it is hard to see that many billionaires, or even mere millionaires, will want to stick around in a city that plans to tax them to extinction. They can easily move to low tax Miami or Dallas, or if that is too far then Boston is only a short flight away. They will all leave very quickly.
But the other half of what Mamdani wants – all that extra tax revenue he is relying on to pay for his spending – will flee New York along with the private jets.
His agenda will have been exposed as crude populism. And it is the New Yorkers with only a couple of zeros on their bank statements who will suffer the most as the experiment collapses in failure.

Kennedy family melts down over 'blood boiling' plan to rename beloved opera center for Melania Trump

A prominent member of the Kennedy family is having a meltdown over a plan to rename the Kennedy Center after President Donald Trump and the Opera House after first lady Melania. Maria Shriver, the daughter of Eunice Kennedy Shriver, said the idea of renaming the iconic cultural center makes her 'blood boil.' 'This is insane. It makes my blood boil. It's so ridiculous, so petty, so small minded. Truly, what is this about? It's always about something. 'Let's get rid of the Rose Garden. Let's rename the Kennedy Center.' What's next?,' she wrote on social media. Shriver, the former first lady of California, is the niece of President John F. Kennedy, for whom the center is named. Other Kennedy family members had a similar reaction. Jack Schlossberg, the former president's lone grandson, raged about the matter on Instagram last week, writing: 'Plain reading of the statute makes clear — You cant do that.' Trump initiated a take over of the Kennedy Center early in his second term and his allies in Congress are doubling-down on that move by attempting to add the Trump name to venue. There are two separate pieces of legislation moving through the House tied to renaming the center, which sits on the banks of the Potomac River in Washington D.C. One involves renaming the Opera House after First Lady Melania Trump and is moving through Congress as an amendment to a spending bill that includes funds for the Kennedy Center. Additionally, Republican Rep. Bob Onder of Missouri introduced the 'Make Entertainment Great Again Act' to rename the whole center the 'Donald J. Trump Center for Performing Arts.' In his protest of the move, Schlossberg, the son of Caroline Kennedy, cited a 1983 federal law that states: 'No additional memorials or plaques in the nature of memorials shall be designated or installed in the public areas of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.' Some Democrats are using that statute to argue the center cannot be renamed without specific legislation to overturn that 1983 act. They say that not even parts of the center can be renamed, such as the Opera House for Melania Trump. 'Legally, they can't just slap her name on it without congressional action,' said a spokesperson for Democratic Rep. Chellie Pingree of Maine told NBC News. 'If Republicans can't pass their budget — which they usually can't — the Melania Trump renaming provision dies,' the spokesperson continued. 'The only real wildcard is whether Trump or his allies ignore the law entirely and try to do it unilaterally. But that would have no legal basis — and would almost certainly trigger a court fight.' Earlier this year, Trump fired President Joe Biden's appointees to the Kennedy board and had himself installed as chairman, ousting longtime leader David Rubenstein. Trump then appointed Special Presidential Envoy Ric Grenell as acting Kennedy Center president and executive director. In appointing his longtime loyalist to head the center, Trump wrote on social media that Grenell would be overseeing daily operations to ensure 'no more drag shows or other anti-American propaganda' are hosted at the iconic arts center. In his first term, Trump avoided the center, refusing to attend its annual Kennedy Center Honors after some of the artists being featured threatened to boycott if he attended. The first couple showed up at Kennedy Center following his takeover, attending a showing of 'Les Misérables' at the iconic venue in early June.

Republican Senate candidate spells name of own state wrong in campaign video

A Republican Senate candidate's campaign advertisement featured an incorrect spelling of his state. A video promoting Rep. Mike Collins (R-GA) was published on Monday (28 July). Mr Collins begins the advertisement by saying: 'Out of touch Democrats like our two U.S. Senators will fight harder for MS-13 gang members than they will nursing students at UGA.' The video features a line from Donald Trump, with the US president praising Mr Collins for doing a "great job." At the end of the video, text on screen read: "Georiga, let's ride." As of 11am ET, the video remained up on Mr Collins' campaign account on X.

The Daily Show jokes that Trump is going after famous Black people in an effort to deflect interest away from Epstein

The Daily Show lambasted President Trump for using a series of targeted verbal attacks to distract attention from the Jeffrey Epstein debacle. 'Trump is going to target every exceptional Black person he can think of,' returning correspondent Jessica Williams said on Jon Stewart 's show Monday night while highlighting that in recent weeks, Trump has singled out Beyonce, Oprah, and former Vice President Kamala with threats. 'We're about a week away from him saying that Urkel did 9/11? Urkel! 'Did he do that?' No, Jon, no, he didn't. He was nowhere near the towers that day,' an Emmy-nominated star joked about the famous child actor who appeared on the '90s sitcom 'Family Matters.' Steve Urkel, a character played by Jaleel White, became associated with the catchphrase 'Did I do that?' which typically followed acts of clumsiness. Williams joked that Trump may even start going after other notorious Black celebrities, including Michael Jordan and Michael B. Jordan. 'He better watch his back. I'm scared for him,' she teased about an imaginary 'Michael C Jordan' on the topic. Williams, an actor and a comedian, formerly appeared as a series regular on the Nickelodeon series 'Just for Kicks' in 2006, before becoming The Daily Show 's youngest correspondent at 22 years old in 2012. Earlier in the show, Stewart spoke on the Epstein scandal after the deputy attorney general, Todd Blanche, met with Ghislaine Maxwell last week. The former socialite is currently serving a 20-year sentence after being convicted for her role in helping Epstein recruit, groom, and abuse underage girls. The talk show host then suggested that the president is trying to downplay his relationship with Epstein and any mishandling of the documents relating to the disgraced financier's case. During the show, Stewart showed a Truth Social post, where Trump lashed out at Beyoncé, Oprah, and former Vice President Kamala Harris on Saturday, demanding that 'they should all be prosecuted!' for 'illegally endorsing' the Democrats in the 2024 presidential election. 'Kamala, and all of those that received endorsement money, BROKE THE LAW,' Trump wrote. Williams, who joined in at the end of the segment, called out the president's 'b*****t' before adding that she had 'had it with Trump.' 'He's got to come clean about Epstein,' she insisted. It was reported earlier this month that in May, Attorney General Pam Bondi told Trump that his name appeared in the files. The president has since filed a $10 billion defamation lawsuit against Rupert Murdoch and The Wall Street Journal 's parent companies, News Corp and Dow Jones, following the newspaper's publication of the president's alleged birthday letter to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The president has consistently denied any wrongdoing regarding his friendship with Epstein. On Sunday, Trump suggested that the Democrats are focused on conspiracy theories. He claimed that 'all they know how to do is talk and think about conspiracy theories and nonsense.' The president is currently on his final day of his visit to Scotland, where he told a reporter to scrap any ideas of his alleged involvement. "Oh, you gotta be kidding with that," Trump said. "No, had nothing to do with it. Only you would think that. That had nothing to do with it."
