Springfield's 'X' intersection construction project begins
Housing conference held at Western New England University
Crews have been in the area doing preparation work and cutting down trees, but Wednesday is the day that construction begins. It's a project that city officials have been talking about for years, and on Wednesday, they will join MassDOT for a ceremonial groundbreaking.
Springfield began developing the project back in 2017, and finally, back in March, they started adding advanced traffic signage, surveying, and removing trees. They say the project will redesign traffic patterns, add new transition lanes, traffic signals, and bike lanes. They'll also add bigger sidewalks, make them more accessible, and put new bus stop shelters in.
The project extends pretty far beyond the 'X' intersection. It stretches especially far on Summer Ave, where it goes as far west as Churchill Street, then east to Daytona. At a public information meeting last week, officials warned there could be increased traffic in the area as construction begins, but you can sign up for project and traffic alerts at Mass.gov.
The groundbreaking happens on Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. State and local officials will be there to celebrate the changes to one of the city's busiest intersections.
