Nick Loftin hits second game-winner in less than a week, Royals beat Mets 3-2 to avoid 3-game sweep
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Nick Loftin delivered his second game-winning hit in less than a week, driving in Tyler Tolbert from second base with a single in the ninth inning to give the Kansas City Royals a 3-2 win over the New York Mets on Sunday.
Tolbert singled off Sean Manaea, who had been dominant in relief in his season debut for the Mets. And when the speedster stole second base, that gave Loftin the chance to deliver another winner after his deciding single Tuesday against Pittsburgh.
Manaea (0-1), who had been out after straining an oblique in spring training and then developing an elbow issue during his rehab outings, allowed that lone run and five hits while striking out seven in 3 1/3 innings.
Noah Cameron delivered another brilliant start for Kansas City, scattering seven hits while matching a career best with eight strikeouts over 6 2/3 scoreless innings. And the rookie left-hander was in line for his fourth win when John Schreiber and Lucas Erceg shepherded a 2-0 lead — courtesy of John Rave's second-inning double — to All-Star closer Carlos Estévez.
Ronny Mauricio led off the ninth with a double off Estévez (4-2). Jeff McNeil followed with an RBI triple off the center-field wall, and fellow pinch hitter Jared Young delivered a sacrifice fly moments later to tie the game.
Clay Holmes allowed two runs and five hits and a walk over five innings for New York. Key moment
Tolbert entered the game in the eighth for Jac Caglianone for his defense. It wound up being his offense that mattered, helping the Royals avoid a three-game sweep heading into the All-Star break. Key stat
The Mets went 1 for 7 with runners in scoring position and stranded eight in the game. Up next
The Mets will be represented at the All-Star Game in Atlanta this week by LHP David Peterson, RHP Edwin Diaz, SS Francisco Lindor and 1B Pete Alonso. The Royals will have INF Maikel Garcia, Estévez, SS Bobby Witt Jr. and LHP Kris Bubic there.

49ers rookie QB officially placed on injured list ahead of training camp
The San Francisco 49ers welcomed their rookies to the SAP Performance Facility next to Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California, on Tuesday for the start of training camp, with veterans set to arrive exactly a week later. However, on Wednesday, the 49ers announced one player who won't participate in training camp yet, as they officially placed rookie quarterback Kurtis Rourke on the active/non-football injury list. Rourke, 24, began his collegiate career at Ohio, where he spent five seasons before transferring to Indiana for the 2024 season. In 36 games at Ohio, he completed 66.3% of his passes for 7,651 yards, 50 touchdowns and 16 interceptions while rushing for an additional 232 yards and 11 scores. In his lone season with the Hoosiers, he completed 69.4% of his passes for 3,042 yards, 29 touchdowns and five interceptions. Throughout his collegiate career, he earned MAC Most Valuable Player of the Year once (2022), All-MAC honors twice (2022-23) and All-Big Ten honors once (2024). The 49ers took Rourke in the seventh round (No. 227 overall) of the 2025 NFL draft, and the Saskatchewan Roughriders also selected him in the third round (No. 25 overall) of the 2025 CFL draft. Rourke is currently rehabbing from a torn ACL that he suffered (and played through) with Indiana. He had surgery for the injury back in January, so he's still rehabbing and has yet to be cleared for practice. For now, the 49ers will roll with the recently-extended Brock Purdy, the free-agent acquisition Mac Jones and 2024 undrafted free agent Tanner Mordecai at quarterback, and with no jobs truly open at the position, they could stick with that group. That is, unless they're just looking for a camp arm to throw to their offensive weapons. More 49ers: George Kittle may be in for another huge year thanks to 2 49ers free agent signings

DC United names Swiss coach René Weiler to replace Lesesne
Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — D.C. United has picked René Weiler to be its new coach. The team announced Wednesday that Weiler will take over once he receives a U.S. work permit. The 51-year-old Weiler, a native of Switzerland, served recently as coach and sporting director at Servette FC in the Swiss Super League. He's also won the Belgian Pro League title and reached the Europa League quarterfinals with Anderlecht and guided Al Ahly to a Premier League championship in Egypt. "D.C. United is a club with a proud history and a passionate fanbase,' Weiler said. 'The foundation on site gives me confidence in what we can build. There's still a lot of work ahead, but I'm fully committed to leading this club back to where it belongs, competing at the highest level in MLS.' Kevin Flanagan will remain interim coach until Weiler arrives. D.C. United fired coach Troy Lesesne last week.
