Aberdeen's Alfie Dorrington feels he can be even better than last season
The 20-year-old made 16 appearances for the Dons after joining from Tottenham in January, with the last of those a standout display in the stunning Scottish Cup final triumph over Celtic in May.
Dorrington returned to Aberdeen last month on a season-long loan and he believes his experience of playing in the Premiership last season can help him kick on to new heights.
'Yes, 100 per cent,' he said. 'I felt every game I was improving with the run of games, which helped me become more confident.
'At first, I was just trying to settle in. But then, when you feel like you get the trust of the team, the fans, the staff, I think it brings out a new side to my game.'
Dorrington was delighted to get the chance to return to Aberdeen.
'I just loved it so much,' he said of last season's spell at Pittodrie. 'I got a good run of games towards the end of the season and finished on a high.
'I just want to build more momentum. Obviously, I'm familiar with the boys, the staff, the city. When I found out that I had the opportunity, it was a no-brainer to come back.'
The Dons kick off their league campaign on Monday away to a Hearts side now under the charge of their long-time former manager Derek McInnes.
Jambos defender Frankie Kent is hoping his side, who finished seventh last term, can capitalise on the optimism generated at Tynecastle this summer amid the arrival of McInnes, a raft of new players, and the involvement of Brighton owner Tony Bloom, who is now a minority investor in the club.
'We want to try and get back to the levels that we hit the previous year (when finishing third) and I think the levels that everyone expects and the levels that we know we're capable of,' said centre-back Kent.
'It's been touched on so many times that last year wasn't good enough and it wasn't what we wanted. But it's a fresh start, it's a new season and a season to be excited about.'

Dele Alli 'looking for a new club' after being banished from Como squad by Cesc Fabregas - amid claims former Tottenham star was 'considering retirement'
Dele Alli is reportedly searching for a new club after being left out of Como's preseason plans by manager Cesc Fabregas. This news comes after reports in Italy stated that the former England international was contemplating retirement at just 29 years old, following a turbulent half-decade in football. Dele is training away from Como's squad as they prepare for their preseason camp in Marbella, and now appears to be a surplus to requirements at the Serie A club, just months after joining from Everton. Nevertheless, Dele still wants to continue his playing career, while Como have told him he must do so elsewhere, according to The Telegraph. The former Tottenham star made just one appearance for the club, which last just nine minutes. After coming off the bench for his debut in March, he was sent off for a challenge on fellow English midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek. It remains to be seen what level Dele continues his football career at, but a move to a Premier League club would certainly be an unlikely lifeline. Dele's exit from Como marks another sobering chapter in a career that once promised so much. He burst onto the scene as a teenage sensation at MK Dons before securing a move to Spurs in 2015, where he won back-to-back PFA Young Player of the Year awards. Aged 22, he starred for England at the 2018 World Cup, helping the Three Lions reach the semi-finals. However, following the departure of Mauricio Pochettino at Spurs, Dele struggled to win the trust of successive managers and was eventually shipped out to Everton in 2022. A loan move to Besiktas followed but was cut short due to injury and disciplinary issues. Dele has previously spoken about the mental toll his career has taken, bravely opening up in an emotional interview in 2023 about childhood trauma and his struggles with addiction. He explained that he had been molested at the age of six, started smoking and dealing drugs by eight, and had attempted to take his own life during his darkest moments. The midfielder revealed in early 2024 that he had been targeting a spot at the 2026 World Cup with England as he looks at an eventual return to international football. Dele previously starred as an England regular and played at Euro 2016 and the World Cup in Russia two years later, but hasn't featured since making his 37th international appearance six years ago. 'You know you can set reminders on your phone, I have a reminder at 11 o'clock every day that says, "World Cup 2026",' he said on Sky Sports in April last year. 'That's my aim for now. I think that people will be like, "he hasn't played in a year" but I don't care, I know my level. 'The only target I have is the World Cup right now. Obviously I'm injured and contracted to Everton and so my mind is just about taking it day by day and making sure my injury is healed and that I'm in the best possible condition after the summer. 'It's annoying because I'll be just fully training as the season ends so it means that I won't have to rush it.'

Aberdeen's Shinnie feeling ‘extremely grateful' on edge of 17th season
Aberdeen captain Graeme Shinnie is adamant he has no intention of winding down as he prepares to turn 34 on the day he kicks off his 17th season as a professional footballer. The midfielder is set to mark his birthday by leading out the Dons at Tynecastle for their William Hill Premiership opener at Hearts on Monday night. Shinnie, who made his senior debut for Inverness in August 2009, played 48 matches last term, including the full 120 minutes of the Reds' memorable Scottish Cup triumph over Celtic in May, and he is confident he still has 'many years left' at the top level of Scottish football. 'I'm extremely grateful to still be in this position, captain of a massive club at this age,' he said in a club interview. 'To still, first and foremost, be as healthy as I am and as fit as I am, I take a little bit of credit in that in how I've looked after my body and how I've done things over the years. But to still be here and be in this position, I'm extremely grateful. 'I still feel like I've got many years to go. You can't look too far into the future now, but last year I played a lot of games, I played a lot of minutes. 'I had next to no injuries. I had an infection in my leg, that was the only thing I had. It wasn't really an injury, I stayed away from injuries. 'I've made 300 appearances (for Aberdeen), I want to push on to 350. If I can make that, then push on to 400, keep striving for more. 'I'm still near the top of the fitness stats. As long as I stay away from injuries, which I've been pretty good for in my career, then I feel like I've got a lot more in the tank. 'I'm hungry for more success. I want to achieve as much as I can. So, yeah, season 17, hopefully it's the best season yet.' The Dons made a stunning start to last season before a dramatic form dip saw them finish fifth in the Premiership. After basking in the afterglow of their Scottish Cup glory day, Shinnie is intent on making sure his side are more consistent in the campaign ahead. 'The inconsistency was so bad for us last season, so we want to change that,' he said. 'We want to be more consistent throughout the season. And if we can do that, then it'll be a good season.' Fond farewell for Son Heung-min but James Maddison off on a stretcher
James Maddison was carried off on a stretcher against Newcastle United with a 'bad' knee injury after his Tottenham Hotspur captain, Son Heung-min, was given an emotional send-off in what is likely to be his final appearance for the club. Son is on the verge of signing for MLS side Los Angeles FC, for a fee in the region of £15million. Players from both teams formed a guard of honour for Son when he was substituted in the 64th minute of the 1-1 draw in a pre-season friendly at the Seoul World Cup Stadium in South Korea. But the game was marred by Maddison's injury, sustained seven minutes from the end, which the Spurs head coach, Thomas Frank, admitted looked serious. Please enable cookies and other technologies to view this content. You can update your cookies preferences any time using privacy manager. 'I think sometimes in life and football things can be both beautiful and brutal. That's what we got today,' Frank said. 'It looks like with Madders a bad injury and then on the other side unbelievable scenes for Son from his team-mates and the respect from the Newcastle players. '[When his] team-mates gathered around, he was emotional. In the changing room it was more of the same. I just said a few things but not much because it's about Sonny and then he said a few things. It was beautiful.' Maddison sustained a knee injury in May, which kept him out of Tottenham's Europa League final win over Manchester United. He was pictured leaving the stadium in Seoul on crutches. 'We're pretty sure it was the same knee he injured before,' Frank said. The 28–year-old had come on as a substitute in the 75th minute of the match, in which Brennan Johnson gave Tottenham a first-half lead before Harvey Barnes equalised. Son confirmed at a press conference on Saturday that he would be leaving Tottenham after a decade at the club, in which he has scored 173 goals in 454 games, placing him fifth on Tottenham's all-time list of highest appearance makers. The 33-year-old will stay in South Korea while his Tottenham team-mates depart, as talks with Los Angeles FC reach a conclusion. Frank confirmed that this friendly may have been his final appearance for the club. 'This is the time to say goodbye to everyone,' a tearful Son said after the match. 'Spurs will always be in my heart. I will cheer them on as a family member.' Meanwhile, the Portugal midfielder João Palhinha is finalising his move to Tottenham and travelling to London on Sunday after completing his medical in Germany. The 30-year-old will not link up with Tottenham in Asia, with Frank's side due to travel home after the friendly with Newcastle. Tottenham and Bayern Munich had been sorting the final details of the transfer over the weekend. The former Fulham midfielder will move to north London on loan with an option to buy, with a fee believed to be in the region of €30million (£26million).
