Man cycles 500km from North Yorkshire to London for Blood Cancer UK

James Badger recently cycled 500km from North Yorkshire to London in memory of his late wife Philippa.
He was joined for the feat by director of York-based dust extraction firm APS, Adrian Ogden.
Mr Badger's challenge saw him cycle 500km from St James' Church, in Birstwith, to St James's, in London, on a 42-year-old tandem bike, with the bike's age being the same as that of his wife when she sadly passed away.
The feat took place across the three days leading up to the London Marathon (Sunday, April 27) - in which Mr Badger also took part.
Mr Badger's wife was diagnosed with blood cancer in 2022, and died two days later while being treated with chemotherapy at St James's University Hospital in Leeds.
The Tandem to the Thames challenge is in aid of Blood Cancer UK, raising funds for a York University research project into Acute Myeloid Leukaemia treatments.

AN award-winning RHS garden has landed at a hospice in York. Garden designers Deb Strachan from Teesside and Alison Walker from near Leeds have generously donated their silver medal-winning garden called Symbiotic Flow, to St Leonard's Hospice in Tadcaster Road, following its success at last week's RHS Wentworth Woodhouse Flower Show. St Leonard's Hospice in Tadcaster Road, York (Image: Supplied) Deb said: 'We chose St Leonard's because we wanted the garden to go somewhere care related, both of us having worked in the NHS before becoming garden designers, and Alison's friend who volunteers at the hospice suggested St Leonard's. "When we visited, the team were so enthusiastic and friendly, it felt right for the garden to go there.' The garden was carefully lifted and replanted in its new permanent home at the Hospice this week, giving patients, visitors and staff a calming space within the Hospice's existing garden, with a group of volunteers coming to help with the planting. 'It's an honour to receive an award for our garden, and even more meaningful knowing it will live on at St Leonard's,' said Deb. 'We designed Symbiotic Flow to promote peace and wellbeing, values that fit beautifully with the hospice's aims. "It reflects the connection between people and nature, whilst also supporting wildlife. We'd like to thank the St Leonard's gardening volunteers, led by John, who helped prepare and plant the bed, and Billy from the facilities team who helped with transport and setting up the sculpture.' York-based plant nursery Vertigrow on the A64 provided the majority of the plants for the garden. Anne-Marie Roberts, director of clinical services at St Leonard's, said: 'We are incredibly touched by this generous gift, and grateful to Deb and Alison for thinking of us. Our gardens are such an important part of the care we provide to patients, their families and visitors. "They offer peace and a connection with nature at a time when people need it most. We're thrilled to welcome Symbiotic Flow into our space, and very grateful to all those who came to help with the planting.' Now a permanent feature of the hospice grounds, the new garden offers a peaceful place for quiet reflection and is open for anyone in the community who wishes to see it. You're probably familiar with many of the benefits of regular exercise, when done properly. From building muscle to boosting your energy and even helping your brain function better, there's no shortage of reasons to work up a sweat. But there's another great benefit you might not think about as much: You could be improving your bone density through exercise, according to experts. 'Bone density refers to how strong and solid your bones are,' Dr. Raphael Longobardi, New Jersey-based orthopedic surgeon told us. He serves with the RWJBarnabas Health Medical Group and specializes in sports medicine, frequently identifying ways to strengthen the body. 'The amount of mineral content in our bones helps them maintain their strength and resistance to fractures. Maintaining bone density is an incredibly important preventative for reducing the risk of conditions like osteoporosis or fractures. This is especially true as we age.'There are also risk factors for certain groups, according to Kai-Yu Ho, a physical therapist and professor of physical therapy at University of Nevada in Las Vegas. Ho said bone density is important to look after 'especially in postmenopausal women, as estrogen loss speeds up bone weakening.' So, if you're concerned about your bone density, how can exercise help? If you haven't been looking after your bone health, now's the time: Based on the experts' advice, we rounded up some small and easy fitness items you can use to help improve your bone density and reduce your risk of fractures. A set of resistance bands with different resistance levels All three experts we spoke to recommended resistance bands as one of the most effective pieces of exercise equipment that can help increase bone density through resistance training. Ho said bands are "useful for beginners and those with limited mobility," while Longobardi explained, "They apply resistance that stimulates bone growth through stress."We like this five-pack because all five bands are the same length, but each one has a different resistance level, from extra-light to extra-heavy. "It's important to begin with lighter resistance, gradually increasing in intensity to prevent injuries," Longobardi said, advice that Ho bands are made with a durable, elastic fabric that comes in a bunch of colors. To properly use a weighted vest for walking to help with bone density or osteoporosis, Medical News Today suggests trying out a vest without weights first, then adding the lowest possible amount and slowly increasing that amount over time. (It's generally recommended that you start with no more than 10% of your body weight, but always check with your physician first.)To do this, you may be best off with an adjustable vest like this one by Zelus, so you can change the weight. "Other weight-bearing exercises such as walking, stair climbing, and aerobics also contribute to bone health," Longobardi said. "Activities such as these cause your bones to bear your body weight against gravity, and this contributes to increasing bone mass and preventing osteoporosis in the future." Sellmeyer also suggested stair climbing as part of her recommended 30 minutes of impact exercise a day. If you don't live in a building with stairs or near a set of stairs you can use, a mini stair stepper like this one can provide an easy and convenient way to do these exercises without having to leave the house or make room for large equipment.
