Currie to join exclusive Warrington Wolves club as he hits milestone

Yahoo17-05-2025
TOMORROW looks set to be a landmark day in the career of Ben Currie.
The forward, who is currently captaining Warrington Wolves in the absence of regular skipper George Williams, is set to join an exclusive list by making his 300th appearance for the club.
The Challenge Cup semi-final victory over Leigh Leopards saw him make appearance number 299 in Wire colours, so he would hit the magic number if – as expected – he leads the side out at Wakefield Trinity on Sunday.
Whenever he next plays, he will become just the 33rd player in club history to play 300 games for the club.
Having progressed through the club's academy, Currie made his first-team debut against Widnes Vikings in April 2012 and has established himself as a key man over time either side of suffering a brace of ACL injuries, first in 2016 and then again in 2018.
While the bulk of his career has come in the second row, current head coach Sam Burgess' decision to move him to loose forward has rejuvenated the England international although his versatility has come in handy.
As well as brief stints back in the second row, Currie has also turned out in the halves and the centres of late and even did a short stint on the wing during the recent Challenge Cup victory over Widnes.
Currie's 299 appearances have yielded 97 tries, making him the third in the highest-scoring Wire forward of all time in terms of tries behind Bob Eccles (119) and Ben Westwood (98). Westwood scored 128 tries for Warrington, but 30 of those came as an outside-back before his move into the pack.
And he's not the only Wire player in sight of a record, with Stefan Ratchford and Marc Sneyd also closing in.
With 1,020 Super League goals to his name, Sneyd needs just six more to draw level with Andy Farrell in fourth place in the competition's all-time list.
Paul Deacon (1,043) and Danny Brough (1,084) are also in sight of the scrum-half although all-time leader Kevin Sinfield is far clear on 1,566.
In terms of Super League points in total, Sneyd is currently in seventh place on 2,244 and needs 18 more to overhaul Danny Tickle in sixth spot.
He could soon be joined in the top 10 by Ratchford, who is level with Iestyn Harris on 1,674 points so needs just one more to move into standalone 10th spot.

(Photo by Chris Unger/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images) Tom Aspinall (15-3) had a 7-2 professional MMA record when the UFC inked him to a deal in 2020. Aspinall made his promotional debut in July 2020 with a 45-second knockout win over Jake Collier. The win earned the then 27-year-old his first 'Performance of the Night' bonus. A knockout win over Alan Baudot followed in October of that year. Aspinall made it three stoppages in a row in February 2021 when he tapped Andrei Arlovski in the second round of their matchup, a card that was headlined by Curtis Blaydes losing to Derrick Lewis by second-round KO. Aspinall's win over Arlovski broke him into the rankings at No. 13. First-round stoppage wins over Serghei Spivac (TKO) and Alexander Volkov (submission) followed the Arlovski triumph. The Blaydes matchup was next on Aspinall's schedule. The injury he suffered in that contest kept him out of action until July 2023 when he stepped into the Octagon to face Marcin Tybura. Aspinall showed no hesitation or ill effects from his knee injury, as he dispatched Tybura in 73 seconds, winning the fight by TKO. Then, with UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones injured and out of his scheduled UFC 295 matchup against Stipe Miocic, the UFC tapped Aspinall and Sergei Pavlovich to face off for the interim heavyweight title at UFC 295. Aspinall won the bout, and the title, with a 69-second knockout. Aspinall defended the interim crown once, defeating Curtis Blaydes via knockout at the 1:00 mark of Round 1 of their UFC 304 matchup. Now 32, Aspinall has seven first-round stoppage wins and one second-round stoppage victory under the UFC banner. He has never gone past 1:09 of the second round in UFC action. Aspinall has earned seven 'Performance of the Night' bonuses during his UFC run. The only win he has where he failed to pick up a post-fight bonus was his win over Baudot in 2020. (Photo by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC) Ciryl Gane (13-2) is the No. 1 fighter in the official UFC heavyweight rankings. The 35-year-old French competitor has only lost in UFC title fights, falling to Francis Ngannou by decision in 2022 for the undisputed title, and losing to Jon Jones via submission in 2023 for the vacant belt. Gane did capture the interim heavyweight belt in 2021 with a knockout of Derrick Lewis. Gane debuted with the UFC in 2019 following a Muay Thai career. He was 3-0 in MMA when he first fought inside the Octagon. Gane went 7-0 to begin his UFC career. His first loss came in a title unification bout against Ngannou. Gane enters UFC 321 on a two-fight winning streak. He defeated Serghei Spivac by TKO in September 2023. In his most recent trip to the Octagon, Gane bested Alexander Volkov via decision at UFC 310. More T-Mobile Arena on March 08, 2025 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by Chris Unger/Zuffa LLC) In June, then-UFC heavyweight champ Jon Jones retired. The UFC named Aspinall the undisputed champion at that time. "Jon Jones called us last night and retired. Jon Jones is officially retired. Tom Aspinall is the heavyweight champion of the UFC," White said during the post-fight press conference following the UFC Baku fight card. "I obviously feel bad for Tom that he lost all that time and money, but we'll make it up to him," White added. "Tom Aspinall is a good guy. He's been incredible through this whole process that we've gone through. He's been willing to do anything – fight him anywhere at any time and do this. Now he's like, 'I'll fight anybody. Tell me who and I'll fight him.' Aspinall has been great. He's going to be a great heavyweight champion for us and I'm excited to work with him." "International Fight Week starts Monday in Las Vegas," White continued. 'Tom will be in Vegas all week with us, so we'll get together with him and figure out what's next.' More event at T-Mobile Arena on April 13, 2024 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by Chris Unger/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images) Aspinall won the interim UFC heavyweight crown in November 2023 with a knockout victory over Sergei Pavlovich at UFC 295. Aspinall took that fight on short notice when the original main event for that card, Jon Jones vs. Stipe Miocic for Jones's heavyweight title was scrapped following an injury to Jones. Despite Aspinall winning the interim crown, UFC CEO Dana White remained steadfast in saying that Jones vs. Miocic was the fight to make. That fight did not take place until November 2024. Jones held on to his belt that night, beating Miocic by TKO in the third round. By that time, Aspinall had already defended his interim crown, scoring a first-round knockout win over Curtis Blaydes at UFC 304 in July 2024. Aspinall, who has not fought since he defeated Blaydes, had been waiting for the title unification bout with Jones since Jones's win over Miocic in November. In late April, Aspinall became the longest-serving UFC interim champion, topping the 535-day reign of Renan Barao, who defended his interim title twice before being named undisputed champion. Late Lino drop goal sees Wakefield beat rivals Leeds

Betfred Super League Wakefield (8) 15 Tries: Walmsley, Storton Goals: Jowitt (3), Lino Leeds (8) 14 Tries: Lisone, O'Connor Goals: Connor (2), Sinfield Mason Lino's dramatic last-play drop goal saw Wakefield boost their Super League play-off chances as they narrowly beat Yorkshire rivals Leeds Rhinos by a single point at a sold-out Belle Vue. Rhinos looked set for victory on a tense evening after Jarrod O'Connor's late try, but Matty Storton ran over to level the scores with minutes left. With the game seemingly heading for a golden point period, Brodie Clark narrowly missed a drop goal attempt for Leeds, before Lino, superb all evening, kicked from distance to snatch victory for Trinity. The result takes Daryll Powell's side into the top six, while Leeds missed out on a chance to move level on points with second-placed Wigan. Wakefield started the better, with Lachlan Walmsley powering towards the line after a free-flowing attacking set. Leeds hit straight back, but rather than copying the hosts' attacking flair, Sam Lisone was used as a battering ram to storm over to level the scores. Brad Arthur's team had less possession, but used it to greater effect in the second half, O'Connor darting for the line to score his first try of the season. Wakefield had shown little penetrative threat during the second 40, but Storton's late finish, converted by Matt Jowitt, meant the scores were level going into the final 10 minutes. Clark's attempted drop goal for Leeds, dragged just to the left of the posts with minutes remaining, meant the packed out Belle Vue crowd of 10,000 looked set for an extra 10 minutes of rugby. But Lino, who mixed bruising physicality with pace and agility all evening, kicked from 35 metres to seal a thrilling win with seconds left on the clock. The Samoan was mobbed by his team-mates, and head coach Powell and chairman Craig Barrass were filmed celebrating wildly in the stands as Wakefield beat their close rivals for the second time this season. Victory takes them sixth, and boosts their play-off chances significantly. Rhinos players were seen sinking to their knees at the full-time whistle. They stay in fourth in the Super League after their second loss in their last three games. Wakefield: Jowitt, Walmsley, Hall, Pratt, Myers, Trueman, Lino, McMeeken, Smith, Faatili, Griffin, Scott, Pitts Interchanges: Nikotemo, Atoni, Storton, Rourke Leeds: Miller, Hall, Handley, Newman, Edgell, Croft, Connor, Palasia, O'Connor, Jenkins, McDonnell, Bentley, Watkins Interchanges: Sinfield, Lisone, Cassell, Littlewood Referee: Chris Kendall
