Tight security for cross-border boat race at Sungai Golok

KOTA BARU: The General Operations Force (GOF) will step up security at the Pohon Jambu post near Sungai Golok during the two-day Muhibbah Boat Race starting tomorrow along the Malaysia-Thailand border.
The move comes as more than 1,000 visitors from both countries are expected to gather near the riverbank, which borders the Thai town of Sungai Golok.
Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said enhanced patrols and checks will be carried out to prevent any illegal cross-border activity during the event.
"We don't want any parties taking advantage of the large crowd to commit illegal crossings. With the influx of visitors, including tourists from both sides, stricter control is essential," he told Bernama today.
The traditional boat race, known locally as Yor Kong, will feature 40 teams, including five from Malaysia.
The annual event is a highlight for locals, with residents of Kampung Pohon Jambu expected to gather along the riverbank with their families.
The race is also expected to be officiated by Narathiwat Governor Trakul Thotham.

WUG 2025: Women's Recurve Trio In Hunt For Bronze

ESSEN (Germany), July 24 (Bernama) -- The women's recurve archery squad stand a chance to win the bronze medal at the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games (WUG) here tomorrow. The national squad of Syaqiera Mashayikh, Ariana Nur Dania Mohamad Zairi and Alia Qursyiah Mazlan lost 6-2 to Japan's trio of Nanami Asakuno, Waka Sonoda and Ruka Uehara in the semi-finals at the Sportpark Am Hallo today. In the bronze medal playoff, Malaysia, who made the archery semi-finals of the WUG for the first time, will meet China, who lost 5-3 to Taiwan in another semi-final. bootstrap slideshow Earlier, the national trio sprang a surprise when they eliminated South Koreans Lee Gahyun, Nam Suhyeon and Park Eunseo 5-1 in the quarter-finals. In a post-match comment, Syaqiera said the achievement of reaching the semi-finals was something to be proud of, and the team needed to improve their mental toughness ahead of the bronze medal match. "For me, our performance is something to be proud of because we gave our best and didn't set out sights on winning the gold… for tomorrow, we need to improve mentally because, in terms of skills, there is no problem," said the 2024 Paris Games Olympian. As for Ariana, although she did not harbour high hopes, she is determined to give her best performance. "If we get a medal, it will be a blessing because we also have a bigger target this year, which is the 2025 SEA Games, so this outing is more about experience and learning, but we will still try hard tomorrow," said Ariana, who also featured in Paris 2024. Syaqiera, Ariana and Nurul Azreena Mohamad Fazil are the national trio who featured in Paris 2024, but ahead of the WUG, Nurul Azreena suffered an injury and was replaced by Alia Qursyiah.

Road closures in Bukit Mertajam for St Anne Feast this weekend

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Several roads near the Minor Basilica of St Anne will be closed from 9 am Saturday to 2 pm Sunday for the annual St Anne Feast, one of Malaysia's largest religious gatherings. The closures aim to manage traffic flow as over 100,000 visitors are expected. Seberang Perai Tengah police chief ACP Helmi Aris confirmed the affected stretch includes Jalan Kulim, from the Caltex petrol station to the Taman Bukit Indah traffic lights. Motorists from Kulim heading to Bukit Mertajam can use Jalan Rozhan or Jalan Sepakat, continuing to Jalan Muhibbah and Jalan Kampung Baru before exiting through Taman B. For those travelling from Bukit Mertajam to Kulim, alternative routes include Jalan Kampung Baru towards Jalan Berjaya, then onto Jalan Song Ban Kheng and Jalan Kampung Baru, leading to Alma and Bukit Minyak. Another option is Jalan Kampung Batu through Taman B to reconnect with Jalan Kulim. A candlelight procession on Saturday evening (7 pm to 11 pm) will also prompt rolling closures along Jalan Kampung Baru and Jalan Berjaya. All roads are expected to reopen by 2 pm Sunday. The St Anne Feast, celebrated annually on July 26, draws pilgrims nationwide and internationally. The church was designated a Minor Basilica in 2019, reinforcing its significance in the Catholic faith. Authorities advise the public to follow traffic police directions and use suggested detours. - Bernama

UDA Aims To Produce Talented Young Bowlers Via CSR Programme

GENERAL IPOH, July 24 (Bernama) -- UDA Holdings Berhad (UDA) aims to produce young bowling talent through its UDA Cares: 'Bangunkan Komuniti, Lahirkan Juara' corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative, in addition to strengthening its commitment towards community development. UDA chairman Tan Sri Mohd Annuar Zaini said the effort is being implemented as it realises that bowling is a costly sport and it doesn't want any young talent to miss out due to financial constraints. "Bowling, which is an expensive sport and involves high participation costs, often denies talented youngsters who are still schooling, especially the B40 group, the opportunity to actively take up the sport. "UDA is confident that this group has hidden talent and can be groomed to become champions if given the space, opportunity, guidance and support,' he said at the UDA Cares Project 'Bangunkan Komuniti, Lahirkan Juara' Programme media conference at Angsana Mall here today. He said the programme, implemented through a strategic public-private sector collaboration, is capable of elevating bowling as a holistic development platform for the younger generation in building identity and discipline and fostering the spirit of sportsmanship. The UDA Cares: 'Bangunkan Komuniti, Lahirkan Juara' was established in February, and it held its first meeting with the relevant agencies to ensure the programme is implemented smoothly and has a significant impact. The selection of participants was held on June 10 and 11, involving 120 students from Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Sri Kinta, Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Tamil (SJKT) Kampung Simee, SK Cator Avenue and Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina (SJKC) Chung Tack Simee. A total of 30 talented students were identified, and they are undergoing a 16-week intensive training from June 16 to Oct 6. Mohd Annuar also said that those selected are being guided by former national bowler Syaidatul Afifah Badrul Hamidi, who hails from Ipoh.
