World number one Magnus Carlsen found his rhythm back, defeating Arjun Erigaisi 2-0 and R Praggnanandhaa 3-1 in the Freestyle chess Grand Slam, which is drawing to a close here.With Hans Moke Niemann taking on his American counterpart Levon Aronian in the finals, Carlsen set up a clash with world number two American Hikaru Nakamura for the third place in the USD 750,000 prize money event.It turned out to be an eventful two matches for Carlsen who was earlier denied the chance to win the event by Praggnanadhaa.The Indian started off with another victory against the world's best in the first game of their mini-match. Root surpasses Ponting, next in sight is all-time leading run-getter Tendulkar
Manchester, Jul 25 (PTI) The prolific Joe Root on Friday surpassed Australian legend Ricky Ponting's tally to become the second highest run-getter in the history of Test cricket and next in sight of the England batter is Indian icon Sachin Tendulkar who continues to head the list. On the third day of the fourth Test against India here, Root first leapfrogged legendary Indian Rahul Dravid and South African great Jacques Kallis' aggregate of runs in a space of eight balls and then went past Ponting by steering the ball behind point for a single as the Old Trafford crowd gave him a standing ovation. Ponting had scored 13378 runs in 168 matches at an average of 51.85, while Tendulkar continues to top the list with 15921 runs. It was apt that Ponting was in the commentary box when Root went past him. The 34-year-old Root began his Test career with a 73-run knock on debut during England's tour of India back in 2012 at Nagpur. 'Congrats, Joe Root. Magnificent," a delighted Ponting, doing commentary alongside Ravi Shastri, hailed the Yorkshire man. Root is playing in his 157th Test. How Many Tests Does Joe Root Need To Beat Sachin Tendulkar's Most Runs Record?
Joe Root has surpassed Dravid, Kallis, and Ponting to become the second-highest run-scorer in Test cricket. How many Tests does he need to go past Sachin Tendulkar? Joe Root is on a record-breaking spree and the biggest record left for him is India great Sachin Tendulkar's for most runs ever in Test cricket — 15,921. On Friday (July 25), he became the second-highest run-scorer in the format with 13380 runs, going past Rahul Dravid (13288), Jaques Kallis (13289), and Ricky Ponting (13378) in the same innings of 121* (201), at Tea in the fourth Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Test at Old Trafford. The question begs itself — can Root be the one to break Tendulkar's currently 12-year-old record, which many thought would never be touched, which Virat Kohli, Kane Williamson and several other greats couldn't come even close to? If he can, how many Tests would he need to do so and etch him at the top of the world? It's difficult to say exactly, but Root has averaged 89 since the start of 2024, and according to CricViz (a sports analytics company), if he maintains that rate, he will need only 29 more Tests to pass Tendulkar and become the format's leading run scorer. Considering England play at least a dozen Tests every year (they played 17 in 2024), he'd need about two and a half years to reach the feat. He was also asked about the Englishman's chances of going past Tendulkar. 'There's still a fair bit to go," Ponting told ICC. 'What is he, 35? Doesn't look like his passion for the game is going anywhere. His run-scoring passion has probably gone up over the years. Can he chase down Sachin? Let's see. He might as well do that," he added.
