Queensland beats New South Wales to win the State of Origin rugby league series in Australia

SYDNEY (AP) — Queensland scored 20 unanswered points in the first half and went on to beat New South Wales 24-12 Wednesday in the third and deciding State of Origin rugby league match, one of the most anticipated sporting events in Australia each year.
Before a sellout crowd at the Olympic stadium in Sydney, winger Xavier Coates scored his sixth try in seven Origin appearances to help give Queensland an 8-0 lead in the 18th minute.
Halfback Tom Dearden scored Queensland's second try in the 27th minute and the Maroons led 14-0 after Valentine Holmes again kicked a conversion. Harry Grant muscled his way past three New South Wales defenders to score Queensland's third try in the final minute of the half and send the Maroons to the break with a 20-0 lead.
Center Stephen Crichton got New South Wales on the board with a try in the 56th minute. But Dearden scored his second try of the match with seven minutes remaining to put the match away for the Maroons.
It was the first points Queensland scored in the second half of any of the three Origin matches this year.
Queensland captain Cameron Munster played in the match just days after the sudden death of his father, Steven, last weekend at the age of 58.
New South Wales took a 1-0 lead in the series with an 18-6 win at Brisbane on May 28. Queensland leveled it with a 26-24 victory at Perth on June 18, hanging on after also leading by 20 points at halftime, 26-6.
New South Wales
won last year's series
after beating Queensland 14-4 in the deciding match at Brisbane.
The State of Origin series was first played in 1982 and Queensland has won it 25 times, including eight years in a row from 2006 to 2013. New South Wales has won it 17 times, and there have been two drawn series.

1986 No. 1 Pick Brad Daugherty, Five-Time NBA Champion Derek Fisher, and NBA Veterans Robbie Hummel, Austin Rivers, and Brian Scalabrine to Join NBC Sports' NBA Coverage as Game Analysts Michael Grady Joins as Play-by-Play Voice 2025-26 NBA Season Begins Oct. 21 on NBC and Peacock STAMFORD, Conn. – July 24, 2025 – NBC Sports finalized its NBA game analyst and play-by-play rosters today with the additions of analysts Brad Daugherty, Derek Fisher, Robbie Hummel, Austin Rivers, and Brian Scalabrine, and play-by-play voice Michael Grady. The 2025-26 NBA season begins on NBC and Peacock on Oct. 21. Daugherty, Fisher, Hummel, Rivers, and Scalabrine round out a game analyst roster for NBC Sports which also includes previously announced NBA veterans Jamal Crawford, Reggie Miller, and Grant Hill. Grady joins Mike Tirico, Noah Eagle, and Terry Gannon as NBC Sports' play-by-play voices for the NBA. This group will handle up to 100 regular season games -- including five games a week for portions of the season -- plus the playoffs. 'We're excited to introduce this group to NBA fans and can't wait for them to set up and break down games for viewers all season long,' said NBC Sports Executive Producer Sam Flood. 'This team would win a lot of games on the court and now they have the opportunity to take their talents to NBC and Peacock.' Brad Daugherty, the No. 1 overall pick in the 1986 NBA Draft, played nine seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers, where he was a five-time NBA All-Star and had his No. 43 retired by the team. Daugherty had a storied college career at the University of North Carolina, playing two seasons alongside Michael Jordan and earning two first-team All-ACC selections and a second-team All-America selection. As a co-owner of Hyak Motorsports and stockcar enthusiast, Daugherty joined NBC Sports in 2020 as a NASCAR pre- and post-race analyst. A five-time NBA champion with the Los Angeles Lakers (2000-2002, 2009-2010), Derek Fisher played 18 seasons in the NBA and appeared in 287 playoff games, second only to LeBron James on the all-time list. The No. 24 overall pick in the 1996 NBA Draft out of Little Rock, Fisher played in eight NBA Finals (seven with the Lakers, one with the Oklahoma City Thunder). After retiring in 2014, Fisher spent time as the head coach of the New York Knicks and the WNBA's Los Angeles Sparks. A two-time AP Honorable Mention All-American during an impressive career at Purdue (2007-2012), Robbie Hummel was selected in the second round of the 2012 NBA Draft and played two seasons for the Minnesota Timberwolves. Since 2023, Hummel has been an analyst for NBC Sports' presentation of Big Ten men's basketball and served as a men's basketball analyst on NBCUniversal's Paris Olympic coverage. The No. 10 overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft out of Duke, Austin Rivers played 11 seasons in the NBA, making the playoffs eight times. He spent his career with seven teams (New Orleans Hornets/Pelicans, Los Angeles Clippers, Washington Wizards, Houston Rockets, New York Knicks, Denver Nuggets, Minnesota Timberwolves). Rivers' father is NBA champion-head coach Doc Rivers, who coached Austin for three-and-a-half seasons with the Clippers. Following his retirement in 2023, Rivers began his broadcasting career as a studio analyst for ESPN before joining NBC Sports in 2025 as a college basketball analyst. Rivers will occasionally work as an NBC Sports studio analyst as well. A second-round pick out of USC in the 2001 NBA Draft, Brian Scalabrine played 11 seasons in the NBA, primarily with the New Jersey Nets and Boston Celtics. During his career, he played in four NBA Finals, winning one in 2008 with the Celtics and becoming a city fan favorite. Since the 2020-21 NBA season, he has been NBC Sports Boston's primary game analyst for Celtics' games. He makes weekly appearances on the network's Celtics Insider show as well as other NBC Sports Boston programming throughout the year. Scalabrine will occasionally work as an NBC Sports studio analyst as well. Michael Grady has been the play-by-play voice of the Minnesota Timberwolves on Bally Sports North since the 2022-23 NBA season, which led him to ESPN's rotation of NBA play-by-play announcers at the start of the 2024-25 season. He has also called NBA games for TNT Sports. Grady began his career as the PA announcer at Gainbridge Fieldhouse for the Indiana Pacers and Fever, and in 2017, began serving as a sideline reporter for the Brooklyn Nets on YES Network and started calling select games for the team in 2020. Grady will continue to call some games for the Timberwolves. The NBA returns to NBC and debuts on Peacock on Tuesday, Oct. 21, when the 2025-26 season tips off. Throughout the course of the season, NBC Sports will present up to 100 regular season NBA games -- including five games a week for portions of the season -- plus the playoffs. NBC and Peacock will present coverage on Tuesday nights beginning in October. After Sunday Night Football coverage concludes in 2026, NBC Sports will launch Sunday Night Basketball across NBC and Peacock. Peacock will also livestream national Monday night games starting Oct. 27. *** In July 2024, NBCUniversal and the NBA announced an 11-year agreement to present NBA and WNBA regular-season and playoff basketball games across numerous platforms beginning with the 2025-26 season. For more information on the agreement, click here. NBC Sports has already announced that Jamal Crawford, Reggie Miller, and Grant Hill will serve as game analysts; Carmelo Anthony and Vince Carter as studio analysts; Maria Taylor and Ahmed Fareed as studio hosts; and Mike Tirico, Noah Eagle, and Terry Gannon as play-by-play voices. Michael Jordan has been announced as a special contributor. Emmy Award-winning producer Frank DiGraci is NBC Sports' NBA coordinating producer. In a nod to its original era of NBA coverage from 1990-2002, NBC Sports is bringing back Roundball Rock, one of the most iconic and beloved theme songs in sports history, and will use an AI-generated voice of the late Jim Fagan, a longtime NBC Sports narrator whose voice was synonymous with its NBA coverage and promotion. Katie Ledecky, Summer McIntosh and a race for the ages at World Swimming Championships

The World Swimming Championships that start this weekend are headlined by an expected showdown unlike any in the history of the sport. Katie Ledecky wants to become the first swimmer to win a seventh world title in one event. Summer McIntosh wants to become the second swimmer — after Michael Phelps — to win five individual gold medals at a single worlds. Only one of those feats can happen at this meet in Singapore. Ledecky, the most decorated female swimmer ever, and McIntosh, an 18-year-old Canadian quickly rising up the all-time ranks, are expected to face off in the most anticipated race of worlds — the 800m freestyle final on Aug. 2, the penultimate day of the eight-day competition. Nick Zaccardi, Some time during McIntosh's training in France this year, she and coach Fred Vergnoux had what he called a long-term planning conversation. They talked about the 800m free, an event McIntosh had dropped from her own jam-packed major meet schedule after placing 11th at the Tokyo Olympics as a 14-year-old. McIntosh is now the world's best all-around swimmer, dominating shorter events. Ledecky won the 800m free in Tokyo, just as she did in London and Rio and would do in Paris. In 2028, she can become the first swimmer to win the same Olympic event for a fifth time — a point also brought up between McIntosh and Vergnoux. 'Perhaps Summer would be the one who wanted to challenge that,' Vergnoux said. McIntosh accepted the challenge a bit early, for these World Championships. She will face Ledecky in not only the 400m free, where they shared the podium at the 2022 Worlds and 2024 Olympics, but also in the 800m free — Ledecky's trademark event. 'There were many reasons why I picked the 800m,' McIntosh said, citing not only the chance to race Ledecky, but also because it slotted in well for her own schedule of five individual events. 'I think it's, in my opinion, the biggest challenge.' Ledecky lowered her own world record three months ago and has just one 800m free final defeat in the last 15 years (more than 60 wins). McIntosh is responsible for that blemish. In February 2024, she beat Ledecky by 5.73 seconds at a local meet in Orlando. Both trained in Florida at the time (Ledecky still does). 'Me beating her in the 800m, and it being a shock to the swimming world, I think says way more about her than it says about me,' McIntosh said in reverence. McIntosh grew up with a quote from Ledecky on her bedroom wall. She has repeatedly said that Ledecky has 'revolutionized' swimming. 'It's always a great race when we're next to each other,' Ledecky said after their most recent head-to-head, when she overtook McIntosh to win a 400m free on May 1 in her second-best time ever. McIntosh's competitive hunger was apparent when she reflected on her Paris Olympic performance: gold medals in the 200m and 400m individual medleys and 200m butterfly and silver in the 400m free behind Australian Ariarne Titmus. 'I wanted to get four golds,' she began her answer in a spring interview. Overall, McIntosh said she was 'super happy' with how things turned out, albeit 'a bit disappointed' with the runner-up in the 400m free. She started working with Vergnoux after Christmas — cross-training included her first time cross-country skiing. She opted to go from four individual events in Paris to five both at these worlds and at the 2028 LA Games. She hasn't decided yet if her 2028 schedule will also include the 800m free or a different fifth event. The only swimmer to win five individual events at one Olympics or worlds is Phelps. The legend FaceTimed McIntosh after last month's Canadian trials. He congratulated her on becoming the first swimmer to break a world record in three different individual events at one meet since his 2008 Beijing Games masterpiece. McIntosh did not break Ledecky's 800m free world record at trials, but she did post the third-fastest time in history. Her 8:05.07 was 95 hundredths off the world record. The two combine for the 15 fastest times in history: 13 for Ledecky, two for McIntosh. "(Ledecky) always brings the best out of me, which is also why I'm never nervous before a race (with her) because I know it's going to be a fight to the end,' McIntosh said. 'I'm going to have the best result because she's going to push me to do it.'

Love all! Venus Williams serves up victory on court and romance with fiancé Andrea Preti

The older of the Williams sisters made a triumphant return to tennis after a 16-month break, driven by the encouragement and support of her long-rumoured fiancé, actor Andrea Preti. Venus had an extended hiatus during which she underwent a medical procedure last July to remove fibroids from her uterus. Venus made a strong showing at the DC Open in Washington this week. The 45-year-old tennis star won her doubles match on Monday, then defeated 23-year-old Peyton Stearns 6-3, 6-4 in singles on Tuesday. Throughout both matches, she showcased her signature powerfulserves and groundstrokes. The seven-time Grand Slam champion and Olympic gold medallist had secured four Grand Slam titles before Peyton was even born. But this time it's not just her tennis victories making headlines. Venus is also winning at the game of love, as she's confirmed the long-standing rumours about her engagement to actor Andrea (37). 'My fiancé is here, and he really encouraged me to keep playing. He's never seen me play,' Venus casually revealed. Venus is now the second-oldest woman to win a tour-level singles match, after Martina Navratilova, who achieved this feat at age 47 in 2004. She told the Tennis Channel that her focus was to play well and win the match. 'You can still play a good match and lose the match. It's just about putting it all together. It's so rewarding to come back after a layoff and injuries.' With her Danish-born fiancé in the audience, Venus was aware that not only were the eyes of the tennis world on her but also the loving gaze of Andrea, who moved to Italy with his family as a teenager. As one-half of the most famous sibling duos in sporting history, alongside her sister Serena, Venus has spent much of her life in the spotlight but has kept her romantic life private. She dated model Elio Pis in 2012 and Nicholas Hammond in 2017 before finding her perfect match in Andrea. The couple were first linked in July last year when they were spotted boating together in Nerano, Italy, along the Amalfi Coast. Since then, they have kept their relationship private, though they were seen together again in January 2025. That same month Venus shared a selfie on her Instagram of them on holiday in the Bahamas, calling her now-fiancé 'the best company'. Engagement rumours followed, sparked by photos of the tennis legend wearing a diamond ring in Rome. Weeks later she was seen wearing the same ring at Milan Fashion Week. The man who captured Venus' heart has spent much of his career as a model but has also made a name for himself as an actor and producer. According to his IMDb biography, Andrea studied acting at the Susan Batson Academy in New York City, after which he landed roles in TV, film and commercials. He wrote, acted in and directed 2015's Italian movie, One More Day, and has appeared in the Italian TV series A Professor. More recently he starred in the 2023 Italian film Temptation and participated in the Italian reality series La Talpa. Grand Slam winner Rennae Stubbs asked Venus in the post-match interview how Andrea has supported her comeback journey. Venus glowingly admitted there were many moments when she simply wanted to relax, but her soon-to-be husband 'encouraged me to get through this'. She is set to face Magdalena Frech in the second round on Thursday, 24 July, and with the announcement of her engagement, one can expect wedding preparations to be on the horizon soon after.
