‘Absolute goosebumps,' says Sachin Tendulkar; ‘A treat to watch,' says Sourav Ganguly as legends react to India's stunning win in 5th Test

Indian Express21 hours ago
India pulled off one of the most memorable comebacks one could ever get to see in Test cricket to beat England by six runs at The Oval and draw the five-Test series 2-2. They were down and out and England were seemingly home and free for much of the fourth day but a late flurry of wickets, alongwith Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna suddenly stopping the flow of runs put England under pressure. The pair then tightened the noose in the short but immensely dramatic Day 5 and astonishingly, India went on to win by six runs
This is despite England needing just 74 to win at one point on Day 4 with as many as seven wickets in hand while Joe Root and Harry Brook were on a partnership of 195 runs in 210 balls. Naturally, this has led to reactions from across the board in the cricket world and beyond. India legends Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly were among the first to post.

Siraj's lion-hearted effort that helped India turn things around from a seemingly hopeless place on Day 4 and fittingly, it was the 31-year-old fast bowler who took the final wicket at the Oval and sealed a memorable win for the visitors. With England six runs away from victory, Siraj torpedoed in a low full toss first ball of the 89th over and uprooted Gus Atkinson's off stump to send the Indian fans at the ground and his teammates into a tizzy.
Siraj had started the proceedings on Day 5 by dismissing Jamie Overton, who had made the match look rather academical after hitting two boundaries early on. Prasidh would strike soon after when he rattled Josh Tongue stumps with the visitors needing just 1 wicket to win. This forced Chris Woakes to walk in with his hand in a sling and tucked away in his sweater. Atkinson did fairly well after that to farm strike and protect Woakes. However, it wasn't to last too long and England, incredibly, lost a Test match despite needing just over 70 runs to win with as many as seven wickets in hand at one point on Day 4.

We failed to recognise Siraj, he should be rested for inconsequential games: Ashwin

Former India all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin feels India had failed to recognize fast bowler Mohammed Siraj before his match-winning performance in the fifth Test against England at the Oval. Siraj helped India snatch victory from the jaws of defeat with his inspired spell on Day 5 as he scalped three out of the remaining four wickets to fall of picked up his fifth five-wicket haul to help India bundle out England for 367 and register their narrowest victory margin in Tests of six runs. Following Siraj's marvellous show at the Oval, Ashwin feels that the time has arrived to recognize Siraj has a true match failed to recognise Mohammed Siraj. The time has come to recognise him now. He once again put his hand up; he has given a compelling reason. Just look at his celebration, it seems as if he is saying, 'This is not the trailer. This is the main picture itself'. He is saying, 'Please consider me as a match winner'. ' He is reminding us what a champion bowler he is. His bowling action, his technique and good work ethic are allowing him to play all five Tests in a series,' said Ashwin on his YouTube channel. Furthermore, he also mentioned how the team management should take care of Siraj's workload going forward as he's also in his 30s and need to build a strong pace-attack around him.'He is also growing old. It is important for the team management to rest him as well from inconsequential matches. He could be your No.1 Test bowler; he could be your go-to Test bowler. We have to rebuild the bowling attack. Akash Deep is there, Prasidh Krishna is there, Arshdeep Singh is there. Around Mohammed Siraj and his experience, we have to build it,' he bowled the most number of overs in the five-match series against England – a whopping 185.3 overs. He finished as the leading wicket taker of the series with 23 scalps from five matches (nine innings) at an average of 32.43 with two five-wicket hauls to his was adjudged Player of the Match at the Oval for registering figures of 9/190 and helping India draw the series 2-2. The right-arm speedster rose to the occasion in the absence of pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah and ran in with full intensity in every spell, giving every ounce of energy in his body. Siraj's lion-hearted effort has helped him earn praise from the entire cricketing fraternity as India began their World Test Championship (WTC) cycle 2025-27 with a drawn series.- EndsMust Watch

"Just Needed One Partnership": Michael Vaughan's Honest Admission After England's Defeat In Oval Test

Former captain Michael Vaughan feels England panicked on the final day of the fifth Test against India in the absence of inspirational skipper Ben Stokes, with only 35 runs needed to win and four wickets in hand. England eventually lost the match by six runs as India made a stunning comeback to draw the five-match series 2-2 on Monday. "...Ben Stokes in that team, England would've won this Test match. He plays such a big role in this team, the mentality... England did panic (on the fifth morning). "They just needed one partnership. They panicked in the way that they can with the way that they play, they play with a huge amount of aggressiveness. Yesterday (Sunday) afternoon, the Harry Brook dismissal did cause that collapse, but it's the way England play," Vaughan told BBC's Test Match Special. Stokes, who played a pivotal role for England with both bat and ball, missed the fifth Test due to a shoulder injury, while pacers Jofra Archer and Brydon Carse were rested. Vaughan said the thrilling series against India should be a perfect preparation for England for the this year's Ashes in Australia, starting in November. "It's been a tremendous five matches for England. You've got to be realistic, this week they were down to 10 men, lost one of their bowlers early, and not got Ben Stokes. You're looking at the team going to Australia and I think there's more pieces in place. "We'll arrive in Perth for that first Test and know the top seven. It's just a matter of the bowling attack and getting that right. Clearly Ben Stokes is going to have to get fit. With Ben Stokes in the England side they can beat anybody. Without him, they can lose to anybody," Vaughan said. England looked on course for a historic win with Harry Brook and Joe Root taking the home team to 301 for three on the fourth day before Brook was caught by Mohammed Siraj off the bowling of Akash Deep. England then lost two more wickets, including Root before the end of the fourth day's play. "(Harry) Brook had that thought process that he wanted to hit 30 or 40 quick runs. What Harry needs to learn is in an Ashes series, in a similar situation, just win. I love the way he plays, his approach. At times, he's a genius. He plays the game in a fashion not many have ever played," Vaughan said. "I don't want to take away from his positivity and flamboyance. But in Sydney, if England are 2-1 up, dig in Harry."

If Ben Stokes was there, England would have won Oval Test: Michael Vaughan

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has weighed in on England's narrow defeat in the fifth and final Test against India at The Oval, claiming that the presence of regular skipper Ben Stokes could have turned the result in England's favour. India clinched a thrilling 6-run win in a dramatic Day 5 finish, levelling the five-match series 2-2 in London on August chasing a record target of 374, fell short despite centuries from Joe Root and Harry Brook. On the final day, they needed just 35 more runs with four wickets in hand but collapsed under pressure, losing all remaining wickets in a flurry as Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna produced a fiery spell of vs India, 5th Test Day 5 Highlights | Scorecard Speaking on BBC's Test Match Special, Vaughan pointed to the absence of Stokes—ruled out due to a shoulder injury sustained during the fourth Test—as a critical factor behind England's defeat. The former skipper felt that England lacked composure and direction in crunch moments.'This morning, Ben Stokes in that team, England would've won this Test match. He plays such a big role in this team, the mentality,' Vaughan said.'You go through this morning and England did panic. They just needed one partnership. They panicked in the way that they can with the way that they play, they play with a huge amount of aggressiveness,' he who has been central to England's Bazball revolution, was sorely missed for his calm influence, tactical nous and ability to step up during pressure situations. While stand-in skipper Ollie Pope made some aggressive decisions, Vaughan believes the leadership vacuum hurt England when it mattered the the match finely balanced on the final morning, Siraj's relentless pace and Krishna's reverse swing delivered the killer blows. England lost their last four wickets, unable to break India's resilience.- Ends
