Bung Moktar calls for accountability over Sabah job woes
The Sabah Umno chief cited an article stating that around 200,000 Sabahans were working in the peninsula in 2022 due to the lack of adequate opportunities back home.
'The Statistics Department of Malaysia (DOSM) findings indicate that higher salaries, between RM2,000 and RM4,999, offered elsewhere are the main reason for this migration.
'The reality is that Sabah is losing its skilled and professional talent, people who should drive the state's development. This results from weak policies, poor economic planning, and the absence of high-impact large-scale investments,' Bung Moktar added.
He wants the Sabah government to explain why the state has the highest unemployment rate in the country despite various claims of development.
'It is our responsibility to speak the truth, a truth that cannot be masked by optimistic figures alone. Unemployment and economic growth are clear indicators of a government's actual performance,' he said in a statement on Thursday (May 22).
Citing figures from the DOSM, Bung Moktar said Sabah continues to record the highest unemployment rate in the country.
'In the fourth quarter of 2024, some 178,000 Sabahans, or 7.7% of the population, were unemployed. This is significantly higher than Sarawak (3.3%), Kedah (1.7%), and Kelantan (3.8%). Although there has been a slight drop from 9.1% in 2022, the figures remain alarming,' he said.
For comparison, he added, Sabah's unemployment rate in the first quarter of 2017 stood at just 5.9% (111,000 people) when Barisan Nasional governed the state under the leadership of then chief minister Tun Musa Aman.
'This shows that the administration at the time successfully laid a strong economic foundation, attracted foreign direct investments, and created job opportunities across various sectors.
'I therefore urge the people of Sabah to open their eyes and assess the true performance of Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor's administration.
'I demand a sincere explanation, not just polished reports on paper. The people of Sabah deserve competent, transparent, and accountable leadership, not a government that continues to burden lives through administrative failure,' he said.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's Producer Price Index (PPI), which measures price changes at the producer level, went down further by 4.2 per cent in June 2025, after a 3.6 per cent decline in the previous month, said the Department of Statistics (DoSM) today. Its chief statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said all sectors registered year-on-year declines in June 2025, with mining and manufacturing sectors emerging as the primary contributors to the overall negative trend of the index. The mining sector declined by 8.0 per cent compared to -15 per cent in May 2025, affected by the declines in extraction of natural gas (-12.0 per cent) and extraction of crude petroleum (-6.7 per cent) indices. Jo Ghani: 456 federal land encroachment cases recorded since 2015
KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 456 cases of encroachment on federal land were recorded from 2015 to May 2025, said Datuk Seri Johari Mohd Ghani. The Acting Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister said most encroachers use the land for squatter housing, small businesses, food stalls, and car wash operations. "According to records from the Department of Director General of Lands and Mines (JKPTG), there have been 465 cases of encroachment on federal land from 2015 to May 2025. "The total area of land owned by the Federal Government is 215,406 hectares. In the case of Penang, 26 complaints involved encroachment on federal land, affecting 18 land lots. "To enforce action against encroachment on federal land, JKPTG will coordinate with enforcement agencies, ministries, and relevant user departments. Under Section 425 of the National Land Code, enforcement notices will be issued to the encroachers to vacate the site. Subsequently, the land-holding agency (KJP) must take control measures to prevent repeated encroachment," he said in the Dewan Rakyat during the Minister's Question Time. He was responding to a question from Dr Siti Mastura Muhammad (PN- Kepala Batas) who asked to state the details of the encroachments on federal government-owned land nationwide and specifically in Penang, the action taken against the encroachers, and whether there are plans to develop land owned by the federal government. Johari said the respective ministry or user department must take action against encroachers, such as installing signboards, fencing the area, hiring security guards, and demolishing any illegal structures built by encroachers. "In more extreme cases where the encroachers refuse to vacate and structures are already built, legal action will be taken. If found guilty, the penalty may be up to RM500,000," he said. Johari said that each parcel of federal land is already planned for development depending on priorities and allocations approved by the federal government. "To ensure federal land is optimally utilised, JKPTG implements land conversion for use by other ministries and federal agencies that need it, as well as through rental and leasing arrangements," he said. Johari was also queried by Datuk Adnan Haji Abu Hassan (BN-Kuala Pilah) on the ministry's long-term and comprehensive strategic plan to address the issue of the failure to manage government assets, including abandoned government buildings, which has led to encroachment and wastage of national resources. Johari said any government land with an assigned user department or ministry becomes their responsibility. If a project or building on the land has been abandoned, the respective ministry must take responsibility to rehabilitate and repurpose the building. "If left abandoned, especially when the structure is over 40 or 50 years old and no longer suitable, the land must be returned to the federal government. The government will then seek alternative uses for it, such as developing affordable housing," he said.

Palm falls on weak rival oils, stronger crude oil limits decline
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian palm oil futures opened lower on Monday for a second session, tracking weakness in rival edible oils, although stronger crude oil prices capped the fall. The benchmark palm oil contract for October delivery on the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Exchange slid RM19, or 0.44 per cent, to RM4,254 (US$1,008.30) a metric ton in early trade. Dalian's most-active soyoil contract fell 0.42 per cent, while its palm oil contract shed 0.78 per cent. Soyoil prices on the Chicago Board of Trade were down 0.38 per cent. Palm oil tracks price movements of rival edible oils, as they compete for a share of the global vegetable oils market. Oil prices rose after the US reached a trade deal with the European Union and may extend a tariff pause with China, reducing concerns that potentially higher levies would limit economic activity and impact fuel demand. Stronger crude oil futures make palm a more attractive option for biodiesel feedstock. Cargo surveyors estimated that exports of Malaysian palm oil products for July 1–25 fell between 9.2 per cent and 15.2 per cent from a month earlier. The ringgit, palm's currency of trade, weakened 0.02 per cent against the dollar, making the commodity slightly cheaper for buyers holding foreign currencies. Palm oil may test support at RM4,211 per metric ton, a break below which could open the way towards RM4,161, Reuters technical analyst Wang Tao said.
