Umno backs renaming MRSM Kepala Batas to honour Abdullah Badawi

The Star30-04-2025
KUALA LUMPUR: The Umno Supreme Council has expressed full support for rebranding MRSM Kepala Batas as MRSM Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, in recognition of the late former Prime Minister's contributions to national development.
Umno secretary-general and Majlis Amanah Rakyat chairman Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the decision was made during the party's Supreme Council meeting on Wednesday (April 30).
He said the renaming is part of the party's recognition of Tun Abdullah's legacy as the "Father of Human Capital Development".
"The official declaration will be made on May 12 by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Rural and Regional Development, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is also responsible for Mara," he said on Wednesday (April 30).
In the same meeting, Umno also expressed gratitude to voters in Ayer Kuning for their strong support during the recent by-election, which saw Barisan Nasional win with a commanding majority in all but one voting district.
"We thank all component parties in Barisan, Friends of BN, and our partners in Pakatan Harapan for their tireless work in ensuring the success of our candidate," Asyraf said.
He added that the result demonstrated increased support from Malay voters, multiracial communities, and especially the youth, indicating a clear rejection of divisive politics.
"The people have rejected racial rhetoric, hatred, slander and fear-mongering tactics that attempt to paint Islam and the Malays as being under threat," he said.
According to Asyraf, Umno will also hold its first-ever Patriotic School Convocation in conjunction with the party's 79th anniversary celebrations on May 11 at Dewan Tun Hussein Onn, World Trade Centre, here.

'Anak Zahid' must accept her name alone carries no weight, she's nobody without her father

DATUK Nurulhidayah Ahmad Zahid, daughter of Deputy Prime Minister and UMNO president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has been reminded that her fame rested on her father's shoulders after she ticked off media practitioners for their tendency to reference her as 'anak Zahid' (Zahid's daughter). The darndest reaction came from one Thinagar Paramasivam who told her that while the media may stop referring her as Zahid's daughter, 'all right-minded Malaysians will always refer you as Zahid's privileged daughter' for she is bestowed her current post and position due to her father's influence. Seconding the view on the comment section of a Malay Mail Facebook post on the UMNO women's wing leader chiding the media 'for erasing her name (on headlines)', another commenter quipped that 'she's merely (a) rakyat biasa (ordinary citizen) without her father's money and political clout'. For context, Nurulhidayah had highlighted her uneasiness of being referenced as 'anak Zahid' in a Malaysiakini article (see main image) whereby she took a veiled jab at UMNO's former vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein who had hinted that he would not appeal to lift his six-year suspension from the party. True to the age-old adage that 'people who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones', some commenters bluntly zeroed in on her father's DNAA (discharge not amounting to acquittal) escape despite the (former) prosecutor having established a prima facie of 47 graft charges against him. Elsewhere, ex-New Straits Times journalist Hanizah Hashim defended the media on her FB page by describing Nurulhidayah's unbecoming demeanour as 'a nobody who thinks she's a somebody'. Such observation invited criticism that Nurulhidayah is 'over perasan' (slang meaning 'full of oneself') and 'delusional' with one commenter even claiming that 'people don't remember her contribution'. 'Worse still, they 'started to get disgusted after she earned her Datukship following her appointment as the parade leader of the askar wataniah (military reserve force of the Malaysian Army) and the slew of political appointments that came her way,' added the commenter. Another remarked that 'she's one of the reasons why people started hating Zahid for whenever she opens her mouth, people get disgusted'. 'She should be off the radar and do more charitable work to improve her image for doing so would have also improved her father's image as well. I suppose nobody would have told this to her though'. – July 4, 2024

Sabah Umno eyes 32 seats

Published on: Friday, July 04, 2025 Published on: Fri, Jul 04, 2025 By: Malay Mail, Julia Chan Text Size: Sabah Umno is prepared to contest and win at least 32 seats in the upcoming state election, with the larger goal still at 40 seats, said chairman Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin. — Picture by Sayuti Zainudin Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Umno is prepared to contest and win at least 32 seats in the coming state election, with the larger goal still at 40 seats, said Chairman Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin. He declared that the party is ready to go up against former ally Gabungan Rakyat Sabah(GRS). Advertisement The Lamag assemblyman reiterated that there will be no negotiation with GRS, as they were prepared to contest head-to-head or in multiple-cornered fights in as many as 25 seats against the eight-party coalition led by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. 'We've been conducting dry runs in many of our constituencies. Our machinery is strong, and we're ready for straight or multi-cornered fights,' he said, adding that the seats are mainly in rural and semi-urban areas BN contested in 2020. 'I expect many six- or seven-way contests. It's okay — everyone believes they can win. I have confidence in our ground game. This is the best way to settle it.' BN's component party, Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah (PBRS), is expected to contest in Keningau and other interior seats with large non-Muslim Bumiputera populations, while PH is seen as stronger in urban and Chinese-majority areas. 'Yes, we've had discussions with Pakatan Harapan (PH). They're going well. They're good partners and we don't see any major issues. They'll do well in the urban seats,' Bung said. This approach runs counter to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's desire for a three-way cooperation between PH, BN, and GRS — an extension of the Federal unity government model to Sabah. At the Federal level, PH and BN govern together with GRS's support. But in Sabah, ties between Umno and GRS have collapsed following a power struggle in January 2023. Umno and GRS were allies during the 2020 state election and formed the government with a slim majority. But tensions simmered beneath the surface from day one. Bung, who was deputy chief minister, accused GRS of betraying agreed seat allocations, planting candidates in BN areas, and marginalising Umno within the state administration. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? ‘Blame game solves nothing': S'wak deputy minister tells civil servants to own integrity

(From left) Juanda listens as Hamden explains enforcement procedures during forest operations. At third left is Hasbilah. BINTULU (July 3): Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier's Department (Integrity and Ombudsman), Dato Dr Juanda Jaya, has urged all levels of government administration to uphold integrity and accountability, stressing that playing the 'blame game' will never solve systemic issues. Speaking at the Sarawak Forest Department Integrity Day 2025 event here today, he cited a past case involving the Welfare Department that became problematic due to negligence and a lack of proper scrutiny. 'Integrity issues involve all parties. Blaming one another will not solve the problem,' he said. 'Everyone responsible for approving projects must thoroughly read and understand what they are signing. Whether you agree or disagree, your signature reflects your integrity.' Dr Juanda also highlighted a small-scale project, the construction of a food stall costing under RM500,000, as an example of poor planning and oversight. 'We saw a toilet that looked like it came from the Roman era, with flooring built higher than the exterior. When asked about it, the agencies involved began pointing fingers at one another. But all the drawings had been signed off,' he said. As such, he reminded civil servants and officials to take the time to verify if a project is logical and meets specifications before granting approval. 'Once you sign, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will not ask whether it was someone above or below you. Anyone involved in regulatory breaches will be investigated on why it was approved and the justification for it,' he cautioned. Commenting on the event, Dr Juanda praised its theme, 'From Seeds to Canopies Everything Matter', noting that it accurately reflects the importance of nurturing integrity at every level, from the lowest ranks to top management. 'If the foundation is flawed, those at the top will also face consequences. Corruption cases can take years to investigate. Don't assume you'll get away with it, every mistake and wrongdoing carries consequences, whether sooner or later,' he added. Adding on, he also condemned the mindset influenced by false teaching. 'Some believe it's acceptable for the powerful to take more and the small ones to take less. But in Islam, all who commit wrongdoing will face the consequences. Everyone will face judgement,' he said. He emphasised that the Sarawak government is serious about governance reforms, highlighting the establishment of the Integrity and Ombudsman unit as a step towards ensuring compliance with rules and procedures. 'Integrity means following the rules. We want not just the confidence of our people, but also that of foreign investors. We must be the best seeds to help grow Sarawak,' he said. Dr Juanda urged public servants to stay focused on their duties and not be swayed by malicious rumours or envy. 'Don't envy someone else's blessings. Do your job well – God sees everything. Your skills cannot be taken away. A fake will always be fake. Integrity at work is something people will notice and value. A diamond will always shine,' he remarked. He also highlighted the importance of embracing audit findings as tools for improvement. 'Auditor-general reports exist for a reason. They highlight areas where our systems may be outdated or where our work processes need change. Don't resist audit feedback – take it positively and implement improvements,' he added. Also present at the event were Sarawak Forest director Datu Hamden Mohamad and Sarawak MACC director Hasbilah Mohamad Salleh, along with other senior Forest officers.
