Remember Monday: Meet the Eurovision hopefuls who sing their trollers' insults

Sky News12-03-2025
You have to have a thick skin to take part in Eurovision which might be why last year's UK entrant, singer Olly Alexander, has already reached out to this year's hopefuls to talk about the pitfalls of putting yourself out there.
Lauren Byrne, Holly-Anne Hull, and Charlotte Steele - members of the country-pop girl group Remember Monday - say they plan to get a drink date with the Years And Years singer before they perform in the contest in May.
Lauren says they had a "lovely chat" with Olly, and "drinks are pending" after he "reached out to us and has sent his well-wishes and given us some advice".
Of course, positivity is a must if you are the UK's Eurovision entrant (Olly only managed 18th place) and thankfully Remember Monday have quite a history of setting their critics to music, performing medleys on TikTok of some of their trolls' funniest comments.
"Some people, you just won't be their cup of tea, so, yeah, we started kind of singing those insults," Lauren explains.
Holly-Anne says the overall reaction to their song What The Hell Just Happened has been "overwhelmingly positive", admitting they have been "taken aback by how kind and positive everyone's been".
So who are this trio? Well, they have a background in musical theatre and have known each other for years.
As Holly-Anne explains: "We met at sixth form college, we were all in the same performing arts class.
"We were kind of known as the three girls that constantly sang every genre, everything, and I guess that's kind of still what we're doing.
"Our teachers constantly would knock on the door. I think we had an A level final paper due or something… which was not even slightly a priority. The priority was getting an incredible cover of My Milkshake Brings All The Boys To The Yard down pat," she laughs.
Like former UK runner-up Sam Ryder, they have already got a huge fanbase of over half a million followers on TikTok, which has to be a help in terms of winning votes.
Although the girls are big fans of Bucks Fizz's "iconic" 80s performance, they say they've no plans to rip off their skirts on the big night.
Charlotte refuses to say much about the staging itself, but adds that "we are all from theatre backgrounds and I think that you can definitely expect some theatrics".
Holly-Anne says they have "some incredible people working with us in terms of creative direction and styling.
"We just can't wait for everyone to see it."
Eurovision being non-political did not stop politics creeping its way into last year's event with several of the finalists referring to ongoing global disputes in the build-up.
This year, between the wars in Ukraine and Gaza, it's hard to imagine we will not see similar scenes.
But Lauren hopes the peaceful message at the show's heart remains the focus, as Eurovision "was designed to bring people together and bring countries together and celebrate artists from all around the world.
"So we're just really looking forward to doing that and celebrating, you know, the music and the artistry that we get to kind of witness."
Around 200 million viewers are expected to watch the competition in the Swiss city of Basel, where Remember Sunday take on 36 other hopefuls.
The band has two months to hone their performance and perhaps the faces they will have to make when the votes come in, too.
While they look cool, calm and can't stop singing now, Charlotte says to start worrying if they go quiet nearer the time, as the marker of them feeling nervous is "we go completely silent, like right before we go on stage.

Ella explained that she'd never realised you could use the cooking device for eggs, so it was a game changer when she figured it out. She then took to TikTok to share her top tip - cooking the eggs at 180 degrees Celsius for 10 minutes. "I could eat boiled eggs for the rest of my life," she said. "Let me introduce you to the perfect boiled egg!" Read more Food stories BAKE IT EASY You can make school cake in air fryers with 6 ingredients, it takes minutes After cooking the eggs, Ella took it out and placed it in a bowl of cold water to cool them down. She then attempted her usual way of peeling the eggs - taught to her by her grandmother - tapping the shell before rolling it. However, the hack didn't work, which Ella said was probably down to the fact it was cooked in the air fryer. "The air fryer egg though," she added, after breaking it apart to show the perfectly runny yolk and firm white. "The only life hack you need," she captioned the video. "My initial thought was just because you can..." one person commented on the TikTok. I've figured out how to make the perfect fried eggs - it's so simple, works every time and you don't even need any oil "Does it mean you should?! "But my flabber was ghasted when it didn't explode and was still gooey! "Every day is a school day!" "No way!! I'm trying this for sure," another added. "You telling it it doesn't explode?" a third questioned. "I tried microwaving and it almost launched my microwave door into orbit." Rise of the air fryer Air fryers have maintained their spot as the most popular kitchen gadget in the UK last year. Annual sales figures from Lakeland show sales of air fryers were up 1,175% on last year – when they were already soaring in popularity – as households continue their efforts to save energy on standard ovens. The retailer said: 'In previous years, their popularity could be attributed to consumers seeking healthier cooking options and fast cooking times. 'However, with the cost-of-living crisis continuing, air fryers have a renewed appeal as an efficient alternative to oven cooking.' The only other products that 'shaped the year' were heated airers – with sales up 51% – and heated textiles, such as heated throws and ponchos, Lakeland said, as households bought gadgets as an alternative to expensive dryers and central and electric heaters. While others took to the comments section to share their own hacks for successfully peeling eggs. "Crack the top small and bottom larger," one wrote. "Blow the egg HARD from the top. "You gotta get a firm grip on the egg with your hands and put the top of the egg really close to your mouth. "Like you're trying to blow a balloon." "Use a spoon to peel an egg... game changer!" another insisted. "If you peel boiled eggs under water it peels even smoother. Like sooo smooth," a third commented.

'I went to Benidorm and was floored after noticing detail about bar'

A woman who went to Benidorm decided to test out its nightlife with her mum and sisters, and said she had the 'best time' at a legendary club after noticing one detail A woman was so taken aback by the bustling nightlife of Benidorm during a family trip that she took to social media to share her surprise afterwards. Ebony Crawford posted a TikTok video from her night out at the Spanish city's Insomnia nightclub, expressing her astonishment at how crowded the club was - even at 5am. "The best time in Benidorm, 5am in Insomnia," she captioned her post, highlighting the vibrant party scene. The footage showed the venue brimming with partygoers dancing to the latest hits. Ebony continued to share her Spanish escapade in Alicante with another video, where she reiterated she'd had the "best time ever" with her mum and sisters. ‌ ‌ Ebony also treated followers to a tour of the Hotel Gold Arcos - where she was staying - including its culinary offerings, which included classic British fare alongside traditional continental dishes. She also shared a peek at her room, boasting a breath-taking view of the sea and nearby tourist attractions. One TikTok user reminisced about their stay at the same hotel: "Amazing hotel, stayed there last October," Another concurred, commenting: "Its such a beautiful hotel isnt it Ebs." In a much more cautionary tale, another Brit holidaying in Benidorm - known as @harrytokky on TikTok - warned fellow travellers about potential "fake taxis" in the area. Harry said these could be "random strangers' cars" and by getting into them, you run the risk of not reaching your desired destination safely. In his video, he said that "in Benidorm there's only one type of taxi that you should be getting into," and they are "white cars with a blue stripe down the middle". He assured that these are the taxis that will "take you to your destination nice and safe," in contrast to the "fake" ones. ‌ Harry advised: "So guys, if you're coming out to Benidorm, they are the only taxis that you should be looking out for, because you don't want to get into some random stranger's car." Elsewhere, holidaying Brits have also been warned about a new "scam" said to be sweeping the region. Businessman Frank the Stag Man, who moved to the Mediterranean coast 13 years ago, said fraudsters have a new trick that you "probably won't be aware of." In a video recorded on the streets of Benidorm, Frank pointed out a number of people holding clipboards approaching passers-by. After turning down the opportunity to fill out a "petition" himself, he explained: "As you've seen there, this is one of the scams that runs along the beachfront." But how does it work? Frank claimed that holidaymakers are asked to sign petitions which, once completed, allow scammers to push their victim into making a donation. His partner interjected, stating: "They'll say it's for the blind or the disabled and that they are petitioning to get something sorted here in Spain." However, she slammed: "It's full of a load of rubbish and illegal to do this here in Spain." Frank added: "They're illegal, scamming, and they will take your money. Some people even get their wallets out and give them a few quid."

Mother-of-two says winning £25,000 was the worst thing that ever happened to her

A British mother who won £25,000 on a gambling website said it ended in 'disaster' with her losing everything. Gabby Walker, a mum-of-two from the UK, hit the jackpot while gambling and said the big win only exacerbated her gambling addiction. After the win, Gabby spent £1,000 in one day on gambling websites and afterwards lied to her family, friends and partner to get them to give her more money so she could use it on betting sites. Gabby has vowed to stop before she loses 'everything' and said she 'regrets' the time she has lost with her kids while glued to her phone placing bets. 'That's why now I'm trying to keep myself busy so I don't have time to sit down and think about gambling,' she said. 'Whether or not people understand it, the urge to gamble is horrible.' In a TikTok clip, the mother revealed she won the £25,000 on her birthday two years ago while with her partner on a £10 bet. 'It might not seem a lot to everyone but to me, that was life-changing,' she said. 'I should have been able to do so much with that money but because of my gambling addiction, I couldn't - I spent most of it being put back on to the gambling websites.' In one day, Gabby gambled away £1,000 and said the urge to bet every day is all-consuming. 'It's like something's taken over you and you have to gamble, you have to do it, you have to do it there and then,' she said. 'You might not have any money, you don't care where you're getting the money from, you'll lie to your friends and your family just to put it on [gambling websites].' Recalling the weeks after her big win, Gabby said she regrets the time she spent away from her children gambling and then trying to recoup her losses. 'Looking back now, I regret it because I was spending less time with my children because I was always on my phone. I was constantly trying to get that next win - trying to win it all back so I didn't lose everything,' she said. 'After winning that £25,000, I felt like I'd lost everything because I put it all straight back on when I should have been spending it on a holiday or activities to do with the children but I didn't. I was selfish and I spent it.' Gabby has maxed out credit cards and would live month-to-month waiting for her next pay cheque, asking her partner to pay for necessities to get by. 'I don't think about what's around me and my surroundings at the time, it's just gamble, gamble, gamble,' she said. 'It's put a wedge in my relationship because I have that gambling issue. 'I never have any money, I lie to my partner and say, "Yeah, I've got money", whereas I don't because I spent it all on gambling. 'He has to always fund for me to survive for the month and for the children to survive for the month. It's awful, it really is.' Gabby has come to terms with her addiction and is trying to keep herself busy and distracted so she's not tempted to pick up her phone and get back on the gambling sites. 'I'm glad I've got the stage now where I'm wanting to change and wanting to get better, although it might be difficult and I know it's going to be difficult,' she said. 'There are going to be days where I'm not going to be able to get through it but with the support of my partner and my children just being there and keeping me busy and just distraction from being on my phone.' She added she will also start a budgeting plan where she will outline all the money she has going into her account every month, then put aside cash for essentials and give the rest of her funds to someone close so she can't access it. 'I'm going to work out what I've got left at the end of the month...I might send it to my partner, put it in a pot, send it to my mum or my dad, I don't know, anyone, just to keep it safe until I need it,' she explained. 'If I feel the need to gamble or want to gamble then I'll have to be open and explain the urges.' Gabby said she knows quitting gambling won't be an 'easy road' but she's determined to stop. 'I know it's not going to be easy and I've got a long road ahead of me but I need to do it, I need to stop gambling because if I don't, I am going to lose everything,' she said. 'I'm going to have no family to support me or anyone because I'd have lied to them to get money. 'I'll lose my partner because that's not fair on him and I'll lose everything. I can't continue gambling all my money, I can't.' Thousands online applauded Gabby's vulnerability, offered their support and shared their own struggles with gambling. 'What I did was lock myself out of all my accounts, contacted customer support and got them to block my accounts, contacted my bank to decline transactions made to gambling sites. This helped massively' one viewer suggested. 'It's the big wins and the max wins that hook you. Also, these streamers gambling fake money, that's hooking people. Stay strong! You've got this!' a second wrote. 'The way I stopped is by making my identity associated with being a non-gambler. Should I gamble? No, because I'm not a gambler. I've got money should I gamble it? No, because I'm not a gambler,' a third explained. 'I won over 60k in the space of six weeks and still managed to get into 23k worth of debt, it literally ruined my life. I can totally relate,' a fourth replied. 'I won 20k. 24 hours later took it to 30k and lost the lot in about two minutes. Gambling is no joke, I'm off it now and I'll never do it again. All the best to you and whoever is going through hell,' someone added. 'From someone who has been in a relationship with a gambler. It's hard but the first step is admitting you have a problem. You have to do this for your family. It breaks people,' a mother said. Where can you find support in the UK for gambling addiction?
