CJ Adams hits a leadoff homer and steals 3 bases as the Nationals beat the Twins 7-2
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — CJ Abrams had two hits including a leadoff homer, stole three bases and scored three runs on Sunday as the Washington Nationals beat the Minnesota Twins 7-2.
Nationals starter Jake Irvin (8-5), a Twin Cities native pitching at Target Field for the first time, gave up two runs on five hits over seven innings. Josh Bell went 3 for 4 with an RBI.
Matt Wallner homered and Harrison Bader had two hits for Minnesota, which has lost six of nine since the All-Star break.
Daylen Lile tripled and scored on Paul DeJong's sacrifice fly in the fourth to put the Nationals on top 3-2.
Washington broke it open with four runs in the fifth off Travis Adams (1-1), keyed by Alex Call's two-run single.
Abrams hit the first pitch of the game from Twins opener Cole Sands for his 14th home run of the season.
After the Twins tied it on Wallner's second-inning homer, Abrams manufactured a run for the Nationals. He led off the third inning with a single, stole second and third and scored on Luis García Jr.'s sacrifice fly.

Leading 4-2, the Nationals loaded the bases with one out in the fifth. Call hit a grounder up the middle that second baseman Brooks Lee was ready to turn into an inning-ending double play. Instead, the ball skipped off the side of the mound and caromed over Lee's head for a two-run single. Key stat
Abrams has five leadoff homers this year and 12 in 470 career games. Up next
Simeon Woods Richardson (5-4, 4.14 ERA) will take the mound for the Twins on Monday as they open a three-game series against visiting Boston. The Nationals travel to Houston, where Brad Lord (2-5, 3.39) will start on Monday.

The 27-year-old is the second Guardians pitcher placed on leave amid the probe, joining starter Luis Ortiz. MLB announced earlier this month that Ortiz's leave was extended through Aug. 31. Clase, 27, earned his 24th save of the season in the Guardians' 6-4 win over the Kansas City Royals on Saturday in Kansas City, Mo. The three-time All-Star was 5-3 with a 3.23 ERA over his first 48 appearances this season. Clase led the American League in saves in 2022, 2023 and 2024. He was 4-2 with a career-best 0.61 ERA over 74 appearances in 2024, when he totaled a career-high 47 saves. Clase led MLB with 42 and 44 saves, respectively, in 2022 and 2023. The right-handed relief pitcher went 21-26 with a 1.88 ERA and 182 saves through the first seven years of his career. He was suspended for 80 games -- the entire season -- in 2020 for testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug. The Guardians (52-53) sit in second place in the American League Central, eight games behind the division-leading Detroit Tigers (61-46). They will host the MLB-worst Colorado Rockies (27-78) at 6:40 p.m. EDT Monday in Cleveland.

Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase placed on leave under MLB gambling probe
All-Star closer Emmanuel Clase has been put on indefinite paid leave as part of a sports betting investigation by Major League Baseball that has already implicated fellow Cleveland Guardians pitcher Luis L. Ortiz. ESPN was first to report the move, with the Guardians confirming it in a social media post on Monday, July 28, saying Clase was "placed on non-disciplinary paid leave per an agreement with the Players Association." The team added that "no additional players or Club personnel are expected to be impacted." Clase had one of the best seasons by a relief pitcher in baseball history in 2024, converting 47 saves in 50 opportunities and posting a 0.61 ERA in 74 ⅓ innings. He finished third in the AL Cy Young voting behind winner Tarik Skubal and runner-up Seth Lugo. This season, he's racked up 24 saves, but with a 3.23 ERA.
