Challenges galore for BRS ahead of local body polls
This is one of the big elections in the state after the Assembly and Lok Sabha polls. The BRS, which faced setbacks in these two elections, is looking to regain its lost ground in Telangana.
The party leaders on several occasions contended that their main focus was on the local body elections in the state and not the council polls, which the party did not contest like the graduates and teachers.
With two senior ministers in the government hinting about the polls, the main Opposition party leaders opined that there would be challenges for the party in the coming days. The party leaders like K Chandrashekar Rao and Harish Rao had to face an inquiry by the Kaleshwaram Commission. Similarly, BRS working president KT Rama Rao also appeared before the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) twice so far. The party leaders said that the Kaleshwaram Commission is expected to give its report by the end of July, and they are not sure how the report is going to be.
Besides these hurdles, the party has not yet started its membership drive and the formation of the committees too. The process generally starts after the plenary in April, but the party has not taken up the drive so far. A senior leader said that the membership drive was to start in June but not taken up since the focus was on preparations to appear before the inquiry commission and ACB. However, the BRS leader said that the membership and committees would not have an impact as all the leaders will swing into action once the election process starts.
Recently, Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy and Panchayat Raj Minister Seethakka hinted that elections for the local bodies would take place next month. However, Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee president B Mahesh Kumar Goud took the ministers to task for talking about the poll schedule. The recent developments like the release of Rythu Bharosa for the Kharif season gave ample indications that the local body polls would be round the corner.
Party leaders are of the strong view that besides these inquiries, the episode of BRS MLC Kalvakuntla Kavitha is also likely to have an impact on the prospects of the party. She recently raised a banner of revolt against her brother and party working president KTR. She also hinted that she would chart her own path if she was not given due recognition in the party. 'This episode will obviously create doubts in the minds of the people that something is not right within the party, and they may get confused,' a BRS leader told The Hans India. Party leaders feel that the local body elections would be the litmus test for the BRS.

Fake govt order issued before Assembly polls leads to infra works worth crores, probe begins
Maharashtra's Rural Development Department (RDD) is probing a fake Government Resolution (GR) issued just days prior to the 2024 state Assembly polls leading to infrastructure works worth crores. The department has asked all Zilla Parishads in the state and all Superintending Engineers of Public Works Department (PWD) to not act on the said GR as it has already led to the tendering and sanctioning of works worth at least Rs 6.94 crore in Ahilyanagar district of western Maharashtra. The RDD has a budget head called 2515 1238 which deals with providing basic amenities to villages as suggested by elected representatives. On October 3, 2024, just prior to the Assembly polls, a GR was issued sanctioning developmental works worth Rs 6.94 crore for Ahilyanagar district under the above-mentioned budget head. Based on the said GR, tenders were issued at the district level. The 25/15 scheme implemented in rural Maharashtra by the RDD is an important scheme for carrying out various development works according to local needs. Under this scheme, infrastructure works such as village roads, drains, Pandan roads (roads leading to farms), roads connecting cemeteries, public toilets, Gram Panchayat office repairs, gymnasiums, market stalls are mainly undertaken. These works are carried out at a cost of Rs 5 lakh to Rs 25/30 lakh each on the recommendation of the local MLA. At the district level, the works are implemented through the Zilla Parishad or the Public Works Department. Under the scheme, works worth Rs 1,500 to 2,000 crores are carried out in the state in a year. 'When the contractors sought payment of works done, the file of the same was noticed by officials in Mantralaya who cross-checked with the issued GRs. It was found that no such GR was ever issued on October 3. It was a work of forgery and cheating. The payment was stopped and departmental inquiry was ordered,' said a senior official from the RDD. On March 28, 2025, the RDD issued circular to all ZPs and the PWD's all Superintending Engineers about the existence of fake GR and to be remain careful while sanctioning works at local level. The circular stated, 'The correspondence from the state government's official e-mail id of should only be considered official regarding the budget head 2515 1238.' The circular also advised to immediately contact the RDD in case of any doubt regarding any GR. It also advised to initiate criminal proceedings. The Assembly elections were held last year. The Central Election Commission implemented the model code of conduct (MCC) for the elections from October 15. Before MCC, developmental works worth thousands of crores of rupees were approved by the state government through all government departments and government decisions for the works were published in a hurry. 'It seems someone took advantage of this. As of now, we have come to know about one district alone. We do not know how many such GRs were issued and whether they were used in other districts,' the officer added. In Ahilyanagar district, the fake government decision has led to as many as 45 development works in four talukas namely Ahilyanagar, Parner, Shrigonda and Nevasa.

BRS demands govt. to switch motors of all LISs to allow ryots take up Kharif crops early
HYDERABAD The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) has demanded that the State Government enable farmers of the ayacut under projects linked to the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project to take up cultivation of Kharif crops early by switching on the motors of Kannepally pump house as lifting of 2 tmc ft of water every day is still possible. Former Minister for Irrigation T. Harish Rao warned that if the government failed to switch on the motors of Kalwakurthy LIS early, the Opposition party would lead the ayacut farmers to the pump house to switch on the motors of Kalwakurthy, Kannepally and other pump houses on their own. Commencing the lifting of water at Kannepally pump house would provide water for irrigation in 15 districts, but the Congress government was foregoing the opportunity as the Chief Minister himself would not know the value of water, he said at a press conference on Sunday. He pointed out that water withdrawal from the Kalwakurthy lift irrigation scheme was not taken up so far, though Srisailam project was getting flooded from May 30 itself, and as on Sunday morning, the reservoir had received over 172 tmc ft water with the help of early rains in Maharashtra and Karnataka. He mentioned that Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy had given away 65 tmc ft additional water to Andhra Pradesh during the last year as Telangana had underutilised its share — only 28% of 811 tmc ft against 34% — for the first time since the formation of Telangana. Due to this, crop holiday was implemented in several areas of the combined Mahabubnagar and Nalgonda districts during the second crop season last year (2024-25) as water was drawn by A.P. for the third crop, Mr. Harish Rao said and added that the Congress government was trying to repeat the same this year too by delaying water withdrawal as also the first crop season under the Krishna Basin projects. He said the government could run all lift irrigation schemes and fill linked reservoirs, minor irrigation tanks and check-dams to allow farmers to take up Kharif crops early so that water could be stored for the second crop too.
