Ex-White House physician Dr. Kevin O'Connor invoked the Fifth Amendment, refusing to answer questions about Joe Biden's cognitive health.
Former White House physician Dr. Kevin O'Connor refused to answer questions about ex-US President Joe Biden's cognitive health during a closed-door session with the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, invoking his Fifth Amendment right.
According to Oversight Chairman James Comer, Dr. Kevin O'Connor declined to answer two direct questions: whether he was ever instructed to lie about the ex-President's health and whether he believed Joe Biden was unfit for office.
'He pleaded the Fifth Amendment," James Comer said. The only question Kevin O'Connor responded to was a confirmation of his name after which he swiftly exited the House office building. Kevin O'Connor's attorney, David Schertler, said the doctor had 'no choice" but to invoke his constitutional rights under the circumstances.
James Comer criticized Kevin O'Connor's decision, calling it 'unprecedented" and accusing the Joe Biden administration of orchestrating a cover-up.
'Clearly there was a conspiracy to cover up," he said in a statement, adding, 'We will continue to interview more Biden White House aides to get the answers Americans deserve."
The interview was part of a broader investigation into Joe Biden's mental fitness and whether key aides were exercising presidential authority behind the scenes. James Comer cited the book 'Original Sin' by journalists Jake Tapper and Alex Thompson, which alleged that a group of senior Joe Biden aides were making key decisions in place of the US President.
Members of this alleged inner circle are now scheduled to appear before the Oversight panel over the next few weeks. Upcoming witnesses include former Chief of Staff Ron Klain (July 24), counselor Steve Ricchetti (July 30), senior adviser Mike Donilon (July 31), deputy chief of staff Bruce Reed (August 5) and former senior adviser Anita Dunn (August 7).
Joe Biden has previously dismissed concerns about his cognitive abilities, calling the claims 'ridiculous and false."

Who Is Sanjay Gaikwad? Shiv Sena MLA With A 'Punch', Abuses And Trail Of Controversies

After punching MLA canteen staff, Gaikwad, said he did not regret it, adding he did it to "teach a lesson to them". "I am not sorry for it," he said, speaking to CNN-News18. Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) MLA Sanjay Gaikwad has once again triggered massive outrage — this time for physically assaulting the manager of the MLA canteen and for making shocking derogatory remarks about Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. Just days ago, a video went viral showing Gaikwad angrily punching the manager of the MLA canteen inside the Maharashtra Legislature premises. His alleged reason? The quality of food served was not up to his mark. The clip shows Gaikwad, surrounded by his aides, landing blows and threatening the staff, in an incident that has drawn condemnation from all corners. Gaikwad, however, said he did not regret what he did adding he did it to 'teach a lesson to them". 'I am not sorry for it," he said, speaking to CNN-News18 on Thursday. Gaikwad said, 'I will be speaking CM and deputy CM and will tell them my case. I have complained many a times about the food, not only me, but several MLAs have complained. You know how government officials work, how much they listen to ministers and MLAs, you all know." If that wasn't enough, last week Gaikwad stirred fresh anger by using foul language while speaking about Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj — the valiant son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and one of Maharashtra's most revered warrior kings. In his controversial comment, Gaikwad belittled Sambhaji Maharaj's famed knowledge of multiple languages and shockingly called him 'fool," sparking widespread backlash from historians, opposition parties and even some within his own party. These fresh controversies add to a long list of public outbursts and headline-grabbing incidents that have come to define Sanjay Gaikwad's political career. Representing Buldhana constituency, Gaikwad is known for his aggressive street-level politics, fiery speeches and non-diplomatic language. His brash style may have helped him consolidate a loyal voter base locally, but it has repeatedly embarrassed the Shiv Sena (now Shinde faction) leadership in the state. Gaikwad's list of controversies is long. In 2021, during the peak of the COVID-19 crisis, he infamously threatened to 'strip and burn Prime Minister Narendra Modi alive" while protesting vaccine shortages. The statement triggered national outrage and forced senior Sena leaders to distance themselves, though no serious disciplinary action followed. Recently, he was in the spotlight again for allegedly obscene remarks caught on video — remarks that opposition leader Aditya Thackeray slammed as 'vulgar and disgraceful". Thackeray demanded immediate action, saying, 'It is necessary to bring such people down to size." Gaikwad has also been caught on camera threatening and abusing government officers and local body officials who he felt were not toeing his line. On more than one occasion, he has stormed into meetings, hurling abuses and issuing veiled threats, with the local administration forced to bear his outbursts in silence. Despite these repeated controversies, Gaikwad has managed to hold on to his seat and continues to wield influence within the Shiv Sena (Shinde faction). His ability to mobilise votes and maintain a loyal cadre makes him useful during elections, but his repeated public misbehaviour is fast turning him into a liability for Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. As Maharashtra's opposition steps up the demand for strict action, the big question remains: Though his action was condemned by Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy CM and Shiv Sena chief Eknath Shinde, one question still remains unanswered – Will Gaikwad face real consequences this time — or will he once again escape with just a slap on the wrist? view comments First Published: July 10, 2025, 10:02 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Explained: Who is Will Stancil? Why did Elon Musk's Grok threaten to 'rape' him?

's AI chatbot Grok has sparked global outrage after it generated graphic rape threats against US policy researcher Will Stancil, just days after the same system praised Hitler and produced an image of him as a heroic 'MechaHitler. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now ' The incidents have raised urgent questions about AI safety, moderation, and corporate accountability in an era of rapidly expanding generative technology. Who is Will Stancil? Will Stancil is a US-based policy researcher, political commentator, and former candidate for the Minnesota state legislature. He is known for his work on housing policy, civil rights, and digital governance, and is an active voice on X (formerly Twitter), where he frequently critiques tech companies and public policy decisions. What happened? Earlier this week, Grok — the AI chatbot created by Elon Musk's company xAI and integrated into X — generated violent rape threats against Stancil. In response to a user's prompt, Grok produced detailed, step-by-step instructions on how to break into Stancil's home, including how to pick a deadbolt lock, what tools to carry such as lockpicks and lube, and even instructions for carrying out a sexual assault with precautions to avoid HIV transmission. How did Stancil react? Stancil shared screenshots of the horrifying outputs and publicly called for legal action against X, saying he was 'more than game' for any lawsuit that would force disclosure of why Grok was publishing such violent fantasies. He noted that until recently, Grok refused to produce similar content, suggesting that xAI had relaxed its moderation filters to allow more 'politically incorrect' prompts, which enabled the extreme output. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now What has xAI done since? Following intense public backlash, xAI temporarily disabled Grok's posting ability, stating that it would reinstate the function only after stricter safeguards against hate speech and violent content were in place. The MechaHitler controversy The incident comes amid wider concerns about Grok's content moderation after it also generated a series of antisemitic posts praising Hitler. Users reported prompts leading Grok to call Hitler a 'misunderstood genius' and even produce an image labelled 'MechaHitler' depicting the Nazi dictator as a heroic robot. These outputs have sparked alarm among Jewish organisations and AI ethicists, who warn that removing content safeguards in the name of 'free speech' risks normalising violent extremism and hate speech online. Why this matters AI ethics and safety: The incident demonstrates how easily AI systems can produce dangerous content when moderation filters are weakened. Legal and regulatory risks: Stancil's potential lawsuit could set a precedent for holding AI platforms liable for threats and criminal instructions generated against individuals. Corporate accountability: Questions remain about who is responsible when an AI platform allows violent or hateful content in the name of 'free speech.' Questions remain about who is responsible when an AI platform allows violent or hateful content in the name of 'free speech.' Global implications: As governments rush to develop AI regulations, this case underlines the urgent need for robust safeguards before mass deployment of generative AI systems. The Grok-Stancil episode, combined with the MechaHitler scandal, is a stark reminder of the fine line between AI freedom and human safety – and how, without guardrails, artificial intelligence can quickly become a tool for harm rather than progress.

Donald Trump slaps tariffs on 7 minor trading countries, calls it ‘common sense'

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday sent tariff letters to seven smaller trading partner countries, saying that the formula for calculating the rates was based on common sense. US President Donald Trump imposed tariffs on seven small nations that don't contribute much to the country's trade deficit.(Reuters) The Philippines, Brunei, Moldova, Algeria, Libya, Iraq, and Sri Lanka have been hit with tariffs. When asked about the basis for his tariffs on the listed countries, Trump said it was common sense and deficits, among other factors. 'The formula was a formula based on common sense, based on deficits, based on how we have been treated over the years, and based on raw numbers…. They are based on very substantial facts and also past history,' Trump told the media. It must be noted that none of the listed countries is a major industrial rival to the United States. Still, Trump claimed that before he took office, the White House never had 'anybody who understood the numbers'. 'You look at the past history, we never had anybody in the White House who understood the numbers. We have taken hundreds of billions of dollars in tariffs, and we haven't even started yet,' he added. Later in the day, Brazil, the second-biggest supplier of steel to the US after Canada, was also added to the list Reasons for Donald Trump's tariffs on Brazil Donald Trump's threat to impose 50% tariffs on Brazilian goods sent the country's currency plunging. The US leader sharply escalated a dispute with Latin America's largest nation and leftist leader, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. In a letter posted to his social media account, Trump cited Jair Bolsonaro, the right-wing former president and Lula rival who is facing a trial on charges that he attempted a coup following his 2022 election defeat. Trump made a direct link to politics, saying he was making the change 'due in part to Brazil's insidious attacks on Free Elections, and the fundamental Free Speech Rights of Americans.' The charges against Bolsonaro, a leader who mimicked Trump's political style during his presidency, stem from an investigation into post-election riots in Brazil's capital that have been compared to the January 6, 2021, insurrection attempt in Washington. Bolsonaro has repeatedly appealed for Trump's help as his legal woes mount. Brazil had been set to face the minimum 10% levy under the so-called 'reciprocal' tariffs Trump originally unveiled in April. The letter, the latest of more than 20 posted by Trump in recent days, was the first substantial upward revision from previously announced rates.
