Odisha govt moots scheme to develop villages of Odisha's greats
Announcing the initiative here on Monday, minister of Rural Development, Panchayati Raj and Drinking Water Rabi Narayan Naik said the state government plans to develop around 100 to 150 villages under the scheme in a bid to improve the rural infrastructure and living standards of people residing in these villages.
'Mahapurush Adarsh Gram will represent the Asmita of the Odia people. Many great persons of the state were born in small, underdeveloped villages. While their contributions are remembered, their birthplaces remain neglected. This scheme aims to develop infrastructure, employment opportunities, education and healthcare facilities in these villages,' the minister told mediapersons.

36 lakh school kits, sans political branding, distributed to students in State
In the current academic year, the government has distributed 35.94 lakh school kits to students from Classes 1 to 10 in government and aided schools with a total expenditure of ₹953.71 crore. A statement released by the Department of School Education said of this total expenditure, ₹778.68 crore was contributed by the State and ₹175.03 crore by the Centre. Each kit is worth around ₹2,279. These school kits comprise three sets of uniform cloth (olive green pants/skirts and light yellow-green striped shirts), one pair of shoes, two pairs of socks, a belt and a school bag besides textbooks, workbooks and notebooks. Students of Class 6 also get Oxford English-English-Telugu dictionary, for Class 1 a pictorial dictionary and dictionaries in Urdu, Tamil and Odia wherever applicable. The statement said for the first time, the Andhra Pradesh government partnered with the Quality Council of India (QCI) to conduct a three-stage quality check (raw materials, production and packaging) for the kits which have been named, Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan Vidyarthi Mithra Kits. This marks a departure from political branding seen during the previous government, when the scheme was named 'Jagananna Vidya Kanuka'. 'The focus of the TDP-led NDA government in the State is on keeping politics away from education. We want schoolchildren to do their learning without labels,' said the statement. It may be noted here that the Jagananna Vidya Kanuka scheme launched by the previous YSRCP government, drew significant public attention. Branded heavily with the image and name of then Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy, the kits became a hallmark of the government's welfare-driven narrative. Promoted as a flagship education initiative, the scheme was celebrated in YSRCP circles as a symbol of inclusive development. However, critics argued that the Jagan government blurred the lines between governance and political promotion, sparking a debate over the use of public resources for personal branding. The NDA government is also said to have saved ₹63.80 crore, compared to previous year, by using an online e-procurement system for tenders, which ensured complete transparency and efficiency, said the statement. ..

Museum to be set up in Puri to promote Jagannath culture
Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government will set up a museum, library and research centre in Puri for the preservation of Jagannath culture and literature, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi said on Friday. Addressing a press conference in Bhubaneswar, Majhi said the complex will play a pivotal role in the study, documentation and promotion of the rich culture associated with Lord Jagannath. The campus will also have an auditorium with a capacity of 300 seats, a space where light and sound shows will be hosted daily and a large open-air stage where cultural performances will be showcased, he said. Stressing that a large number of tourists, especially the youth, visiting Puri are not aware of the Jagannath culture, Majhi said little has been done in this regard for the last seven decades. 'For the promotion and preservation of Jagannath culture and literature, the government has now decided to set up this world-class centre in Puri,' he said. Majhi also said that no steps were taken earlier to develop Puri as a tourist destination. 'Think about it, if a tourist comes to Puri today, he has two main destinations, one of which is the Jagannath temple and the other is the sea beach. Apart from this, there is no other entertainment or tourism infrastructure where he can spend some time,' he said. 'So, to solve these two problems, our government has decided to establish a world-class Shri Jagannath Museum, Library and Research Centre in Puri. It will be built in one complex,' he said. Majhi said the museum will showcase the history of the temple construction, making of wooden deities, Kalinga's victory in Kanchi, festivals and temple rituals, among others. All these events can be displayed through paintings, miniature statues, plaques and other items, he said. The proposed library will have books related to Jagannath culture as well as Odia culture and tradition, he said, noting that it will also have e-library facilities. The Chief Minister said there are many stories related to the Jagannath temple, and those will be divided into episodes and presented in Odia, Hindi, English and Bengali through the light and sound shows. In another decision, the Chief Minister said the civic body in Puri will be upgraded to a municipal corporation. Majhi said all the processes related to this will be started on Saturday. 'The government has decided to upgrade the Puri Municipality to a municipal corporation. Puri Mahanagara Nigam will be formed with areas in Puri town and the surrounding panchayats,' he said. The proposed Puri Municipal Corporation will have about seven to eight panchayats in Puri Sadar and Brahmagiri blocks, he added. At present, there are five municipal corporations in Odisha -- Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Berhampur, Sambalpur and Rourkela. Puri will be the sixth one, officials said.

Swapneswar Mahadev temple declared protected monument by ASI
1 2 3 Bhubaneswar: The historic Swapneswar Mahadev Temple located on Bankad Fort premises in Banpur has been declared a protected monument by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Known for its intricate Utkalian temple architecture, the structure stands testimony to the glorious legacy of early medieval Odisha. The temple, believed to have been built during the 6th to 8th century AD under Shailodbhava dynasty, is situated in the tribal-inhabited Niladriprasad village under Banpur panchayat samiti in Khurda district. "This declaration is not just about protecting a temple, it is about safeguarding Odia identity, heritage, and the spiritual consciousness rooted in our land," said law minister Prithviraj Harichandan in his X post. Harichandan recalled the efforts of his father, Biswabhusan Harichandan, who as the state culture minister in 1977-78 first entrusted the responsibility of protecting the site to the state archaeology department. However, the site remained neglected for decades. The temple's preservation received fresh impetus after the ASI took charge during the tenure of the Modi govt. The process was fast-tracked following formation of BJP govt in Odisha in 2024. The law minister thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Union culture minister Gajendra Singh Sekhawat, and former culture minister G. Kishan Reddy for their support. Bankad Fort, once the capital of Shailodbhavas, has long remained under-explored in Odisha's mainstream heritage discourse. With the ASI's official recognition, locals hope the site will now receive better protection, infrastructure, and tourism development. "This is a moment of joy for the people of Banpur and Odisha. We have waited long for this recognition," Harichandan said. Apart from Swapneswar Mahadev Temple of Odisha, the ASI has also included the rock shelter of Hazaribag in Jharkhand and Moidams of Sivsagar in Assam in the protected list. ASI has delisted 17 national monuments, sources said.
