Khamenei says Israel war meant to ‘overthrow system' in Iran
TEHRAN : Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Wednesday that Israel's attacks during last month's 12-day war were intended to weaken the Islamic republic's system and spark unrest to topple it.
'The calculation and plan of the aggressors was to weaken the system by targeting certain figures and sensitive centres in Iran,' said Khamenei during a meeting with judiciary officials.
During the meeting, excerpts of which were published in videos on his website, he said the move was meant to stir 'unrest and bring people into the streets to overthrow the system'.
Israel launched an unprecedented bombing campaign against Iran on June 13, killing top military commanders and nuclear scientists.
Iranian authorities said more than 1,000 people were killed in Iran.
During the war, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told Fox News that the Israeli strikes 'certainly could' bring about a change in the Iranian system.
'The Iranian regime is very weak,' he said during the interview on June 15.
Iran responded to the Israeli attacks with drone and missile fire, killing 28 people in Israel, according to Israeli authorities.
On June 22, Israel's ally the US launched unprecedented strikes of its own on Iranian nuclear facilities at Fordo, Isfahan and Natanz.
Iran hit back with missile strikes on US Al-Udaid airbase in Qatar, which Khamenei described on Wednesday as a 'big blow' to the US and warned that 'even greater strikes can be dealt to the US and others.'
A ceasefire between Iran and Israel has been in place since June 24.
Israel's attacks took place two days before Iran and the United States were scheduled to meet for a sixth round of nuclear talks which had begun on April 12.
The talks have not since resumed.
Tehran has reiterated that it remains open to diplomacy provided that Washington offers guarantees it will not resort to military action against the Islamic republic.
On Wednesday, Iran's parliament ruled out negotiations without meeting certain 'preconditions', not giving specifics.
Khamenei said Iranian diplomats and the military should exercise 'care and precision' in the path ahead, without elaborating.
'Whether we enter the field of diplomacy or the military arena… we will enter from a position of strength.'

Donald Trump's lawsuit against Bob Woodward over audiobook is dismissed
NEW YORK: Donald Trump cannot pursue his nearly US$50 million lawsuit against the journalist Bob Woodward for publishing tapes from interviews for his 2020 best-seller "Rage" as an audiobook, a federal judge ruled on Friday. The decision by US District Judge Paul Gardephe in Manhattan is a victory for Woodward, his publisher Simon & Schuster and its former owner Paramount Global. They had argued that federal law barred the US president from copyrighting interviews conducted as part of his official duties, and that no president before him ever demanded royalties for publishing presidential interviews. The defendants also called Woodward the "sole architect and true author" of the interviews, just as journalists like the late Walter Cronkite and Barbara Walters were in interviews with other presidents. Woodward also said his interviews reflected "classic news reporting" that helped convey accurate information to the public, and thus amounted to "fair use." Trump was interviewed by Woodward 19 times between December 2019 and August 2020, and about 20 per cent of "Rage" came from the interviews. The book was released in September 2020, while the audiobook "The Trump Tapes," including Woodward's commentary, was released in October 2022. Trump sued in January 2023, saying he told Woodward repeatedly that the interviews were meant solely for the book. Woodward said he never agreed to that restriction. The US$49.98 million damages request was based on what Trump's lawyers called projected sales of 2 million audiobooks at US$24.99 each. Jho Low reportedly hiding in Shanghai luxury mansion, say journalists
KUALA LUMPUR: Fugitive financier Low Taek Jho, better known as Jho Low, is allegedly living in a luxury mansion in Shanghai under a fake identity, according to journalists who exposed the 1MDB scandal. In a livestream titled 'Finding Jho Low', investigative duo Bradley Hope and Tom Wright claimed Low resides in Green Hills, an ultra-exclusive neighbourhood in Shanghai. Citing evidence from multiple sources and newly obtained documents, they alleged Low is using a forged Australian passport under the Greek name Constantinos Achilles Veis. The claim was also highlighted in a report by Variety. Hope and Wright, who played key roles in uncovering the multi-billion dollar 1MDB financial scandal, said their investigation continues with fresh leads despite Low's long-standing disappearance. An Interpol Red Notice was issued in 2018 against Low, who is wanted in both Malaysia and the United States for allegedly masterminding the misappropriation of US$4.5bil from the state fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad. Authorities in Malaysia have made repeated attempts to locate Low. Last year, then-inspector-general of police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said there were still no concrete leads on his whereabouts.
