Max Homa, among those grinding at final qualifying for U.S. Open, is carrying his own bag

Max Homa is going old school. One of the 66 golfers vying for one of the six spots at final qualfying for the U.S. Open, Homa was seen carrying his bag at Kinsale Golf and Fitness Club in Columbus, Ohio.
You love to see it.
This particular qualifier is conducted by the Ohio Golf Association and Homa could have his caddie there with him, but he's choosing to walk it with a stand bag slung over his back for the 36-hole grind.

Homa shot a 3-under 69 on this first 18 and has an afternoon tee time of 1:20 p.m. local time to improve his standing. He's tied for sixth, five shots back of the 8-under 64 posted by Erik van Rooyen. If Homa is tied for sixth after 36 holes, there will be a playoff, as only the to six, not the top six and ties, advance.
Max Homa watches his shot from the fairway on the ninth hole during the third round of the 2025 Memorial Tournament.
A few days ago at the Memorial, Homa was asked about U.S. Open qualifying.
"I never play well in the U.S. Open anyway," he said, "so, if I don't get in it's all good. I just wanted to play because now that I'm a dad I would like to win or something on a Father's Day. But if not I'll just hang out with my son and it will be a great day."

Philip Barbaree fires first sub-60 score in PGA Tour Americas history

Philip Barbaree Jr.'s summer just got even better. About a month removed from qualifying for the U.S. Open and eventually finishing 66th at Oakmont, Barbaree fired the first sub-60 score in PGA Tour Americas history, a 13-under 59 Saturday at the Commissionaires Ottawa Open at Eagle Creek Golf Club in Ottawa. There were three sub-60 rounds prior to the merger of PGA Tour Canada and PGA Tour Latinoamerica – 58, Jason Bohn, 2001, Canadian Tour; 59, Greyson Sigg, 2019, PGA Tour Canada; 59, Drew Nesbitt, 2018, PGA Tour Latinoamerica. Barbaree's round included 11 birdies and an eagle, which came on his final hole, the par-5 18th. Barbaree closed birdie-birdie-eagle, and he'll enter Sunday at 20 under, which was good enough for the clubhouse lead. Barbaree entered the week 35th in the Fortinet Cup. There are seven tournaments remaining in the season, and the top 10 players in points at season's end will earn Korn Ferry Tour cards.

Emma Raducanu and Leylah Fernandez reach the semifinals in Washington, just like at the 2021 US Open

Emma Raducanu reached the semifinals at the D.C. Open — the biggest tournament where she's made it that far since her surprising 2021 U.S. Open title — by eliminating Maria Sakkari 6-4, 7-5 on Friday. On a muggy day with the temperature topping 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 Celsius), Raducanu took a medical timeout while reeling off the last five games of the match after trailing 5-2 in the second set. 'I would like to say I'm pretty good in the heat, for the most part, but I was really struggling today,' said Raducanu, who was 18 when she became the first qualifier to win a Grand Slam singles trophy. 'It was one of the toughest matches, conditions-wise, I have ever played in. ... Those points in the second set, I was getting a bit wobbly. I'm just happy I could close it out, and it was two sets.' Also reaching the semifinals at the hard-court tournament in Washington was Leylah Fernandez, the runner-up to Raducanu at Flushing Meadows four years ago. Fernandez moved on with a 6-4, 7-6 (4) victory over qualifier Taylor Townsend on Thursday. Next for Fernandez is a matchup against 2022 Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina, the highest remaining seed in the field at No. 3. Rybakina was a 6-3, 6-3 winner over No. 5 Magdanela Frech, the player who beat Venus Williams on Thursday night. Raducanu's semifinal opponent Saturday will be Anna Kalinskaya, who defeated No. 4 Clara Tauson 6-3, 7-5. In men's action, Ben Shelton made it to the D.C. Open semifinals for the second consecutive year, getting past Frances Tiafoe 7-6 (2), 6-4 in an all-American quarterfinal at night. Shelton won 90% of his first-serve points and ended the match with his ninth ace, at 146 mph. The fourth-seeded Shelton, a two-time Grand Slam semifinalist, will face No. 12 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina on Saturday for a berth in the final. Davidovich Fokina beat No. 1 seed Taylor Fritz on Friday night, 7-6, 3-5, 7-6 (3). The other men's semifinal will be No. 7 Alex de Minaur against Corentin Moutet. De Minaur beat No. 14 Brandon Nakashima 6-4, 6-4, and Moutet was a 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 winner over 2021 U.S. Open champion Daniil Medvedev in a match delayed for about an hour late in the third set because of lightning in the area.
