North Texas family's dream Bahamas vacation turns into nightmare after husband and father nearly cut in half by boat propeller

CBS News04-07-2025
A dream summer vacation in paradise this week has turned into a nightmare for a Prosper family.
A 42-year-old husband and father is in intensive care in a Miami hospital after a crime in the Bahamas that almost cost him his life.
After a flight from DFW that arrived in the Bahamas on Monday, the Slough family couldn't wait to pose for a photo on the beach before a 10-day vacation in Exuma.
But minutes later, on the first day of the trip, something happened in the water that would change their lives forever.
Slough family
"Just like a 20-minute snorkel, you know, right there on the beach, right before we ate," said Whitney Slough.
Whitney Slough said her husband, Brent, and their two daughters were snorkeling only about 20 feet from the beach when a small boat appeared along the shoreline.
"I saw this boat speeding so close to shore, and I was like, 'what the hell?'" Whitney Slough said.
"I felt like a thump thump, and I was like, 'did I just get hit by a boat?'" said Brent Slough.
A 42-year-old former Army Ranger, Brent Slough almost had the lower half of his body sliced off by the propeller blade as it plowed over him.
"His bottom was almost completely detached from his legs," said Whitney Slough.
"My left leg wasn't functioning, and I felt like something was wrong with my lower body," Brent Slough said.
The trauma amplified when the couple's teenage daughter had to rescue her father with a float.
Meanwhile, the boat, captured on a security camera, kept going.
"So I surfaced and I looked to my right and I see two guys in a boat and one of them looks back and they just keep on going," Brent Slough said.
What followed was a harrowing trip in the back of a truck to an ambulance jet that would take Brent Slough to a hospital in the U.S.
"The doctor told me, 'please get to a hospital in Miami, you need to get to the U.S. for something this traumatic," said Brent Slough.
The injuries include multiple leg fractures and deep gashes that doctors say could still be life-threatening if they become infected.
But the couple knows it could be worse.
"This was God getting us through this 100%," Whitney Sough said.
With their daughters still in the Bahamas, their mother is heading back and on a mission: She is determined to find the men on this boat.
"Oh, they're going to be found," she said.
Whitney Slough worries that authorities won't find the boat responsible without her persistence.
"It's against the law to be within 200 feet of the shore," Whitney Slough said. "Brent was about 20 feet out ... I just wish they would turn themselves in, but if they don't turn themselves in, then we have to find them."
A family vacation that should be carefree, but instead turned into horror for the Prosper family, which will eventually need help arranging an expensive private ambulance flight from Miami to Dallas. Friends of the family have started a GoFundMe for expenses.
"It breaks my heart because we're not on vacation together, and we are not with our girls at the same time," said Whitney Slough. "I'm so grateful that he's alive."
If there's one thing that the Sloughs said others can learn from their experience, it's how much they wish they had travel medical insurance for a trip out of the country.
CBS News Texas contacted authorities in the Bahamas about the investigation, but have not been able to reach anyone familiar with the case.

Motor rally accident kills three spectators in France

Three spectators died in central France on Saturday after a car driven by a 22-year-old woman racer veered off the road during an auto rally, authorities said. The driver of the modified Peugeot 208 that hit the spectators and her 51-year-old woman co-driver were taken to hospital but without life-threatening injuries, prosecutors said. Two men died at the scene and prosecutors later announced that a third man, airlifted to hospital, succumbed to his injuries. The three killed were two brothers, aged 70 and 60, and a 44-year-old man, according to the public prosecutor's office, which opened an investigation. Several people who witnessed the accident near the town of Ambert in central France were in shock, a local official told AFP. In total, a dozen people were taken to a psychological support unit set up in the nearby village of Saint-Just. The accident occurred around 11 am (0900 GMT) on Saturday. "This is a tragedy for the world of racing," said Joel Mathurin, the local prefect, or top government official for the area. Regional prosecutor Laure Moisset said the accident was "very violent". In a short statement, the rally organisers said that the race was halted at 10:49 am. All spectators were asked to leave the scene and the event's award ceremony was cancelled. Dozens of firefighters and police were dispatched to the scene. The investigation was "in its early stages," the prosecutor said. The Peugeot 208 car was to be examined. The road where the accident took place, almost a straight line according to authorities, has been closed. Prosecutors said they would have to determine whether the spectators were in an authorised area during the rally. "I prefer to remain cautious," Moisset told reporters. "It is still a little too early to be precise," she added. Organised since 1965, the motor rally attracted 167 teams for its 32nd edition. In the rally held last year, a race marshal died. mla-st-as/rmb

Royal Caribbean cruise boat worker stabs female coworker and then dies jumping overboard

A Royal Caribbean crew member jumped overboard to his death after stabbing his female coworker, according to police. A 35-year-old South African man was working on the Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas cruise ship when he stabbed a 28-year-old South African female crew member 'multiple times' just before 7.30 a.m. Thursday, the Royal Bahamas Police Force said. The man then fled the scene and jumped off the ship, authorities said. He was later pronounced dead by onboard medical staff. The female victim suffered stab wounds to her upper body. She was treated and is now in stable condition, police said. It's not immediately clear what prompted the violence. A motive behind the stabbing has not been identified and crew members have not been publicly named. An investigation into the matter is ongoing. An autopsy has been scheduled, police said. A spokesperson for Royal Caribbean described the incident to NBC News as "a personal dispute.' No additional details were mentioned. "Our crew immediately initiated a search and rescue operation, but unfortunately the crew member passed away," the company in a statement to CBS News. "We extend our condolences to the crew member's family and loved ones. To respect their privacy, we have no additional details to share." Passengers recalled crew members rushing after the intercom blasted 'Oscar, Oscar, Oscar" — the Royal Caribbean's code for man overboard, the outlet reported. The ship then slowed before turning around. The Independent has reached out to the Royal Caribbean for more information. The Icon of the Seas was making its way back from the Bahamas to Miami when the incident transpired, CruiseMapper shows. The cruise ship departed Miami on July 19 and then made stops in St. Marteen, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the Bahamas, before returning to Florida. The Icon of the Seas, the world's largest cruise ship, made its maiden voyage in January 2024. The 1,200-feet-long vessel boasts seven pools, the 'world's largest waterpark at sea,' six waterslides and nine whirlpools. It holds up to 5,610 passengers and 2,350 crew members across its 19 floors.

Emilie Kiser's husband won't face charge in son's drowning, DA says

The husband of a social media influencer will not be charged in the May death of his 3-year-old son, prosecutors in Arizona said. Brady Kiser, husband of TikTok and Instagram influencer Emilie Kiser, will not be charged in the drowning death of their son, Trigg, because prosecutors were unlikely to get a conviction in the case, Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell said in a news release July 25. Trigg Kiser died on May 18 after being pulled from a backyard pool in Chandler, Arizona, six days earlier, police previously told USA TODAY. Court documents said Trigg's death was an accidental drowning in the family's pool. Police interviewed Brady Kiser Brady Kiser told police he was watching the couple's newborn son when Trigg fell into the pool on May 12, according to search warrant applications granted by Maricopa County Superior Court judges in May. Court records included a summarized police interview with Brady Kiser. Brady Kiser had told Chandler police he was home alone with the couple's two boys on May 12 while his wife was out with friends, the court records said. He told police he saw Trigg playing near the pool, which was "not uncommon," the court records said. He said the pool usually had a protective cover on it, they said. Brady Kiser said he was "soon distracted" by their newborn son, Theodore, when he lost sight of Trigg for three to five minutes, the records said. He then found Trigg floating in their backyard pool, they said. He "immediately" jumped in to help Trigg and called 911, the records said. The Chandler Police Department on July 15 announced that it recommended a class 4 felony charge of child abuse against Brady Kiser. Police officials previously told The Arizona Republic that criminal charges against parents in child drowning cases were rare. After "careful review of the evidence," which included surveillance video showing how the drowning occurred, the Maricopa County Attorney's Office determined the case did not meet the standard of a 'reasonable likelihood of conviction,' Mitchell said in the July 25 news release. Heat wave: Late July's oppressive heat forecast isn't normal Emilie Kiser's internet fame drove awareness of case Emilie Kiser is a TikTok celebrity with about 4 million followers, 1.7 million followers on Instagram and has a presence on other social media platforms where she often posted about parenting, her home and also promoted products. She made her last social media post on May 12 and hasn't spoken publicly since her son's death. Emilie Kiser has also turned off commenting on most of her Instagram and TikTok profiles, while Brady Kiser made his Instagram account private. Timeline since Emilie Kiser's son died: A drowning, a lawsuit, a possible charge The Kisers did file a May 27 lawsuit to prevent the release of records about her son's death. In the filing, attorneys said the family "desperately want to grieve in private, but sadly, the public will not let them," adding that her son's death "has become a media frenzy." That suit has prevented the release of a police report and some other records about the investigation. In the lawsuit, the Kisers' legal team argued dissemination of the information, which would normally be made available to the public, would violate her family's privacy. A judge ordered officials on June 3 not to disclose any records until lawyers reviewed and discussed their contents. The legal team later agreed that some records, such as redacted police and medical examiner reports, could be released. But anything made available should balance her privacy against the public's right to know, the Kiser's lawyers said. Mike Snider is a national trending news reporter for USA TODAY.
