British and Irish Lions call up former England captain Owen Farrell
The 33-year-old former England captain, a three-time Lions tourist, earned the last of his 112 Test caps at the 2023 World Cup and has not played any rugby for nearly nine weeks after suffering a concussion.
But the fly-half is a proven international performer and his father said the call-up was justified.
"When you look at the experience that Elliot's had, I mean the experience isn't just the playing side, it's how you make the group feel, the little chats that you have around the place to make sure that everything's gelled together," he said.
"And obviously Owen would bring a lot of that into the group."
While Finn Russell is the clear favourite to start the three-Test series against the Wallabies at fly-half, Farrell can also operate in the centre and has a trusty boot for goal-kicking.
But his call-up is a surprise with the Lions having plenty of options in the backs and the likes of Scotland's Tom Jordan and Wales' Blair Murray also seen as in the running as replacements.
"Well, he's fit otherwise he wouldn't be picked," said Farrell when asked about his son's lack of recent rugby after an injury-plagued season with Racing 92.
"I know that the guys have been keeping in close touch with him ... and he's been training full ball for quite some time now.
"If he didn't have a chance (of playing), then what's the point," he added. "Everyone should be competing.
"That's what everyone in the group would want but along with that the experience brings the support that you need for the group, and again, how you make the room feel."
The versatile Daly, a 72-Test England veteran, was forced off during the second half of the Lions' 52-12 victory over Queensland Reds on Wednesday, with X-rays revealing a fractured forearm.
"It's disappointing for all of us, he's an unbelievably popular bloke amongst the group," said Farrell. "So very sad."
It is their second injury setback since arriving in Australia for their nine-match tour on June 22.
Experienced Welsh scrum-half Tomos Williams pulled a hamstring during their opening clash with Western Force and is also out of the tour, with Scotland's Ben White joining the squad as replacement.
The first Test is on July 19 in Brisbane, with three more warm-up games before that, starting in Sydney on Saturday against the NSW Waratahs.
Ireland's Tadhg Beirne was appointed skipper for the match, with tour captain Maro Itoje given the night off. He is joined in the second row by James Ryan.
Pierre Schoeman, Luke Cowan-Dickie and Finlay Bealham pack down in the front row while Henry Pollock, Josh van der Flier and Ben Earl fill out the backrow.
English pair Alex Mitchell and Fin Smith start at scrum-half and fly-half respectively, with Scottish duo Sione Tuipulotu and Huw Jones in the centres.
Hugo Keenan and Blair Kinghorn make their Lions debuts and are joined in the back three by Mack Hansen.
British and Irish Lions (15-1):
Hugo Keenan; Mack Hansen, Huw Jones, Sione Tuipulotu, Blair Kinghorn; Fin Smith, Alex Mitchell; Ben Earl, Josh van der Flier, Henry Pollock; James Ryan, Tadhg Beirne (capt); Finlay Bealham, Luke Cowan-Dickie, Pierre Schoeman

FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - LaLiga - Villarreal v FC Barcelona - Estadio de la Ceramica, Villarreal, Spain - September 22, 2024 Villarreal's Thierno Barry (15) in action with FC Barcelona's Pau Cubarsi (2) REUTERS/Pablo Morano/File Photo (Reuters) -Everton have signed French forward Thierno Barry from LaLiga side Villarreal on a four-year contract, the Premier League club said on Wednesday. Financial details of the signing were not disclosed but British media reported the deal is worth about 27 million pounds ($36.68 million). The 22-year-old Barry played for France's under-21 team at this year's European Championship, where they reached the semi-finals. He joined Villarreal last year from Swiss club Basel, scoring 11 goals in 35 LaLiga appearances. "I had good conversations with the manager (David Moyes). He told me I have the quality to play in the Premier League ... For me, it is a dream to play in the Premier League," Barry said in a statement. "When the manager (Moyes) came last season, I think he changed a little bit the team and I feel this and the new stadium, I think the club comes with a new ambition, so I want to play my part in that." Everton, who will move into their new Bramley-Moore Dock stadium for the start of next season, begin their league campaign at promoted Leeds United on August 18. Rugby-Kinghorn injury in Lions' win over Brumbies isn't serious, says Farrell
Rugby Union - Six Nations Championship - Scotland v Italy - Murrayfield Stadium, Edinburgh, Scotland, Britain - February 1, 2025 Scotland's Blair Kinghorn acknowledges the fans after the match REUTERS/Russell Cheyne CANBERRA (Reuters) -British & Irish Lions fullback Blair Kinghorn's knee injury that marred a patchy win over the ACT Brumbies in Canberra on Wednesday did not seem serious, coach Andy Farrell has said. The Lions had to work for their 36-24 win over a depleted Brumbies team, some of whose best players were absent at Australia's training camp. Kinghorn came off early in the first half and spent the rest of the match icing his left knee. Losing Kinghorn would pose problems for Farrell ahead of the first Wallabies test on July 19, given he is already without utility back Elliot Daly for the three-match series. Asked after the match if he feared the worst for Kinghorn, Farrell said, "No". The fullback had been singing on the bed where staff were assessing him, he said. "He got a bang on the knee. He carried on for quite a bit but there was no need to keep him going ... he's in good spirits." Marcus Smith, who came on for Kinghorn, performed well, scoring one of the Lions' five tries. "He had some really nice touches," Farrell said. "He's dangerous with the ball in hand. It's good learnings for him." Farrell fielded a lineup close to the one expected for the first Wallabies match, with lock Maro Itoje recalled as captain and flyhalf Finn Russell directing play. The Lions had a poor start, conceding a try in the opening minutes, but imposed themselves for a fourth successive win on their Australian tour, following victories over Western Force, Queensland Reds and the New South Wales Waratahs. "Our game control was pretty good tonight, which allowed us to keep the pressure on in the right end of the field. So that's a nice step forward," Farrell added. "We're in a good place ... we're doing well in certain aspects of the game, in fits and starts and etc, but we need to improve in all areas." "It's a good feeling," said Itoje, sitting next to Farrell at the post-match press conference. "We know we're not the finished article, we know that we have to get better, we know that we have to improve. But I think that's a pretty good position for us to be in." Soccer-England midfielder Henderson to leave Ajax on free transfer, say reports
FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - World Cup - European Qualifiers - Group K - England v Latvia - Wembley Stadium, London, Britain - March 24, 2025 England's Jordan Henderson Action Images via Reuters/Matthew Childs/File Photo AMSTERDAM (Reuters) -England international Jordan Henderson is to leave Ajax Amsterdam on a free transfer after 18 months at the club, Dutch media said on Wednesday. The 35-year-old, who joined the club from Al-Ettifaq of Saudi Arabia in January 2024, has proven a valuable asset as Ajax finished runners-up in the Eredivisie last month and won direct entry into the Champions League group phase. Henderson, who captained the club, still has one year left on his contract. Ajax granted Henderson a few extra days off after the death of former Liverpool teammate Diogo Jota but on Wednesday he reported to the club's training camp in the Netherlands to say goodbye to his teammates, the reports said. There was no announcement from Ajax, for whom Henderson has played 57 times, scoring once. In March, Henderson won a surprise England recall in new manager Thomas Tuchel's first squad after being left out of Euro 2024. He has since moved to 84 caps after playing in three World Cup qualifiers this year against Albania, Latvia and Andorra. (Writing by Mark Gleeson in Cape Town; Editing by Ken Ferris)
