"Trust the Process": Sreeja Akula's inspiring advice to young Table Tennis star Divyanshi Bhowmick

India Gazette26-06-2025
Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India], June 26 (ANI): In a lively exchange that captured the spirit of mentorship, Olympic star Sreeja Akula caught up with 15-year-old table tennis sensation Divyanshi Bhowmick on the sidelines of the recently-concluded UTT Juniors. The fireside chat was a showcase of the bond between two generations of Indian table tennis players.
Divyanshi, who won gold at the Dream Sports Championship Table Tennis in March, spoke about playing in the Dream UTT Juniors, 'Getting to see the top players up close, training with them, and having you play right in front of me - it was incredible,' she said according to a release from Dream Sports Foundation.
The star, currently ranked third in the U-15 category, has already made waves by challenging senior players - a testament to the rising standards of Indian table tennis.
When asked by Divyanshi about her toughest experiences on the table, Sreeja revealed, 'I've had several challenging matches that taught me different lessons. In the Commonwealth Games I was almost on the verge of losing my quarter-finals against Mo Zhang. I kept reminding myself to focus on each point, not the scoreline. Then, in the Paris Olympics against Sun Yingsha, I had a 10-5 lead in the first two games but the situation was completely different.'
'My biggest lesson from the Olympics was never becoming passive when leading - I was just trying to keep the ball on the table instead of playing aggressively. 'My advice to young athletes would be to believe in yourself, trust the process and your team, and keep pushing hard,' Sreeja added.
Her words carried the weight of experience, having competed at the highest level and playing a key role in taking the Jaipur Patriots to the semifinals in the ongoing Ultimate Table Tennis.
'Don't get too focused on the final outcome, but concentrate on the process and try to improve each day,' she noted.
In a heartwarming twist, the Stanley's Chennai Lions' young TT player revealed how the pandemic sparked her table tennis journey, 'We got a table for our house during lockdown and I'd spend the whole day practicing with my dad and sister. As I kept playing, I fell in love with the sport, and then I started winning.'
Both athletes spoke highly about the Dream Sports Foundation's impact on their careers. Sreeja, who has been supported since 2021, reflected, 'The support came at exactly the right moment when I was seeking sponsorship... It wasn't just financial help - they connected me with a dietician, mental trainer, and gave me exposure through international tournaments.'
When discussing her goals, Divyanshi's determination stood out, 'My long-term goal is winning an Olympic medal for India and breaking into the world's top 10. We're putting in the work every single day.' Sreeja's response was filled with encouragement: 'With your style of play, you'll definitely make it happen.'
Sreeja's daily routine reflects the dedication required at the highest level.
'Being disciplined on and off the court is crucial for me because you have to spend at least 2 hours a day maintaining your fitness. It's also very important for preventing injuries,' she explained.
The conversation's lighter moments revealed personal touches that made both athletes relatable. Divyanshi's sporting heroes? 'Manika Batra... and you,' she told Sreeja with a smile. Sreeja's role model? Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar.
Divyanshi also added during the rapid fire that one athlete she dreams of meeting was China's world champion and Olympic gold medalist, Chen Meng. For Sreeja, the Indian Olympian shared that her coach Somnath Ghosh brought the most energy to practice sessions.
Divyanshi is now preparing for her upcoming Asian Championships with aspirations of representing India at the Olympics. Meanwhile, Sreeja continues to inspire the next generation. Their exchange serves as a reminder that the most powerful victories come from lifting others up along the way. (ANI)

Gautam Gambhir's Dressing Room-Shaking Speech Goes Viral, India Star Lauded For Inspiring Act

Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir hailed Rishabh Pant for his steely half-century despite an injured foot, saying that he has "inspired the next generation and created a legacy for himself", which is marked by resilience, bravery and putting the eam first. Pant, though unwillingly, has to bow out of the ongoing Test series against England due to a foot injury, with Tamil Nadu's Narayan Jagadeesan as his replacement. His last gift to the team before being forced to part ways due to injury was a valuable half-century, which he scored despite his injury and added some valuable runs to the first innings total of 358 runs. Speaking in a video by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Gambhir said, "The foundation of this test team will be based on what Rishabh has done for the team. I hate talking about individuals; I have never spoken about individuals in a team sport. You have not only inspired this dressing room, but you have inspired the next generation." View this post on Instagram A post shared by Team India (@indiancricketteam) "This is what you have done, and that is a legacy which you have created for yourself and everyone in this dressing room. So very, very well done from everyone. And the country will always be proud of you," he added. Pant said that his move to bat was a gesture from his side to do whatever it takes to make his team win, and he was not thinking about any personal goals. "It has been amazing the way they have backed me. The team is under pressure, everything is there, but when the whole country stands behind you for the same cause, that is something, that emotion is difficult to explain. How proud I feel to represent my country. The only message I am going to give my team is, Let us win it, guys. Let us do it for the country," he added. All-rounder Washington Sundar also noted how swollen Pant's foot was and called him a "son of the country". "It is very difficult to even put in the feeling that he would be going through in words because he has fractured his toe, and he is in pain no matter what. I even saw his foot; it was swollen badly. So I think for him to even walk around actually takes a lot, but he did a lot more than that. I think the whole country is proud of him, and he is just the son of a country, I would say," he added. Pant finished the series as the second-highest run-getter currently, with 479 runs in four matches and seven innings at an average of 68.42, with two centuries and three fifties, and runs scored at a strike rate of over 77. His best score is 134, and he scored twin tons at Leeds, becoming the first Indian to do so in a Test. He broke several records during the series, establishing his reputation as the best wicketkeeper-batter among all Asians, especially in South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia (SENA) nations. He also overtook his predecessor, MS Dhoni, for most Test tons by an Indian wicketkeeper, sealing his legacy as an all-time great already.

Nasser Hussain slams Ben Stokes' ‘silly' move: ‘He didn't have to bowl Brook… Washington & Jadeja deserved to be there at the end'

The Manchester Test between India and England, which seemed to be ending for a quiet draw took a u-turn quickly after England skipper Ben Stokes went to the Indian batters and offered his hand to call an end to the match before the last hour's play was to start. But with Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar batting on 89 and 80, the Indians didn't take the offer from Stokes and chose to continue batting. Former England captain Nasser Hussain said he didn't have a problem with the call made by the Indian team, and both Jadeja and Sundar deserved to be there at the end. 'I didn't have a problem with it. England did. They had tired bowlers and tired legs and wanted to get off but the two lads had worked hard to get into the 80s and 90s and wanted hundreds,' said Hussain to Sky Sports. 'Stokes didn't have to bowl Harry Brook and it looked a bit silly but we make too much of these things. India deserved the draw and Washington and Jadeja deserved to be there at the end,' he added. Shortly after this drama, Jadeja scored his century as Stokes resorted to bowling loopy deliveries to him through Harry Brook. Jadeja slammed a six down the ground to score his 2nd Test century. Sundar, too, reached his maiden century as India finally agreed to end the hard-fought match in a draw. A visibly frustrated Stokes said after the match, 'I don't think there would have been much more satisfaction in walking off 100 not out, getting your team out of a tricky situation, than walking off at 80 or 90 not out. Scoring 10 more runs isn't going to change the fact you've saved your team from a series defeat.' India head coach Gautam Gambhir asked that if the shoe was on the other foot, would England have done the same? 'If someone is batting on 90 and the other one is batting on 85, don't they deserve a hundred? Would they have walked off? If someone from England side was batting on 90 and 85 and someone had the opportunity to get his first Test 100, wouldn't you allow him to do it? They weathered the storm. It's up to them. If they want to play that way, nothing more to say. I think both those guys deserved a 100 and fortunately they got it,' he said on Sunday at the post-match press conference.

Supreme Court quashes FIR against shuttler Lakshya Sen in birth certificate forgery case

The Supreme Court Monday quashed the FIR against badminton player Lakshya Sen, his family members, and his coach over allegations of fabricating the birth certificates of Sen and his brother. Granting the relief, a bench of Justices Sudhanshu Dhulia and Aravind Kumar said that continuation of criminal proceedings in the matter would amount to an abuse of the process of the court. On February 19, 2025, the Karnataka High Court rejected the petitions by Sen, his family and coach, U Vimal Kumar, following which they approached the top court. Issuing notice in the matter, the SC had on February 25, 2025, stayed further proceedings in the matter. The complainant in this case, who runs a badminton academy, alleged in 2022 that Vimal Kumar, a badminton coach at the Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy, colluded with the parents of Lakshya Sen and his brother and forged birth certificate documents in 2010 to allow their participation in tournaments restricted to specific age groups. The complainant alleged that birth certificates were fabricated to claim government benefits after participating in the tournaments. He produced certain documents obtained by way of RTI in support of his argument. In 2022, the police registered a case under sections 420 (cheating), 468 (forgery for the purpose of cheating), and 471 (using as genuine a forged record) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). However, the investigation was not concluded after the Karnataka High Court granted an interim stay. While refusing the petition to quash the proceedings against Sen and others, the HC observed that the authenticity of the documents produced before the court was not challenged. 'When prima facie materials are placed on record which constitute the offences, I do not find any reason either to stall the investigation or to quash the initiation of criminal proceedings. There are sufficient materials that are placed before the Court by the complainant, which are the documents that were obtained under the Right to Information Act from the appropriate authority. Under such circumstances, I do not find any reason to entertain the petitions,' it said. Lakshya Sen, a former junior World No 1, has won medals at various international events, including the World Championships and Commonwealth Games, and is also a recipient of the Arjuna Award. His father D K Sen is also a badminton coach.
