Since arriving in Austin, Steve Sarkisian has turned the Texas Longhorns into one of the best football programs in the country. That is poised to continue with the top-ranked 2025 recruiting class in the country. The Longhorns have also been busy building for 2026 with 15 commits, two of whom are five-star prospects. Based on his on-field results, Sarkisian is seen as one of the best coaches in the nation. Recently, the Longhorns head coach made an appearance on the '3rd and Longhorn' show and explained why he believes that the Forty Acres is the best place in the country to play college football. "I honestly think this is the best place in the country to come play football at," Sarkisian said. "I firmly believe that, and I think we have the stats, the nuances and the information to back that up," Sarkisian said. "Who's the one school that's gone to back-to-back college football playoffs, back-to-back semifinals? Who's the one school their first year in the SEC that went to the SEC Championship game? Who has the most draft picks in the NFL draft over the last two years? ... Who has last year signed the best class in the country, the year before that a top-three class in the country, the year before that a top-five recruiting class in the country?' Under Sarkisian's leadership, Texas has become a fixture in the College Football Playoff. Last year, they fell two wins short of a national title and are one of the early favorites as the regular season quickly approaches. While football is his specialty, Sarkisian also highlighted where Texas stands academically. Advertisement "Name another school who's getting compared to Harvard, Yale, and Princeton, but on the flip side is getting compared to Georgia, Ohio State, and Alabama on the football field," Sarkisian said. While, in the end, Sarkisian's impact will be measured in wins and losses, he did not hold back when expressing his support for the school he calls home. Nine stunning recruiting losses in past week put 2026 Longhorns class in jeopardy
The important recruiting month of June has turned sour for Texas coach Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns coaching staff. Three huge official visit weekends gave UT high hopes for an announcement period that would take the Texas class to the top ten, maybe the top five for 2026. Instead, the Horns are searching for answers after losing nine battles over the past week. Of course, there are six months until the Early National Signing Day. But the recruiting losses suffered by Texas in the past few days will reverberate for years to come. It could all just be bad luck or a coincidence. It could be that Texas, who's NIL system has been among the industry leaders, just doesn't allow them to sign every target. Advertisement In at least one case, it all came down to money. But NIL riches can't account for all nine. Sarkisian believes Texas is managing NIL well. And it's hard to argue based on the success of the last few years. Last recruiting cycle, the Longhorns had the consensus No. 1 recruiting class in the nation. "I think NIL has been good for the University of Texas. I think that we've managed it the right way. I think we're fair with our players. We look at the value of the player on our roster and where he might sit. And then we put a number on it and it is what it is. ... I feel like so many teams struggle when they don't know and they're just grab bagging. They're reactionary instead of forward thinking. And we try to be forward thinking to try to make sure we get the right nucleus of people in our organization." -- Steve Sarkisian with Colt McCoy Sark's recruiting pitch is strong. "I honestly think this is the best place in the country to come play football at," Sarkisian said. "I firmly believe that, and I think we have the stats, the nuances and the information to back that up." But Texas doesn't get into bidding wars. And sometimes, that stance will cost the program a blue chip prospect. "When you start thinking about it, big picture, and get out of just get out of, 'How much does the contract say?' And you start thinking about long term and where's my life going to go and what's it going to look like and what they can get there, well maybe we can get a guy for a little less than another school is offering. Especially in this day and age, that's got to happen. Because every power four school has, at minimum, that same amount of money. ... If I don't have as talented people, I'm going to have more money to offer 'Johnny.' Well, Johnny has to see the forest through the trees a little bit and say, 'This is short term money. I want to look at more the long term money.' And Texas is going to give me the opportunity to create more opportunities, whether it's on the field, off the field, degree, NIL, brand building, player development, opportunity in the NFL. What does that look like for me? I've got a lot more lanes to achieve that just this spot over here that's just got one avenue." -- Steve Sarkisian on the 3rd & Longhorn Podcast It is a very logical strategy that has served Texas well. But it also helps explain the past week. Texas sets a budget for each player they are pursuing. They might even offer a little less because of all of the benefits the UT program provides. However, many players do think "short term." They are 17-year-olds. Advertisement Texas isn't trying to beat just one school for recruits, they are trying to beat dozens. If another school allocates a higher budget for a player, money can be enough to win the day. If Alabama budgets more for a safety or Texas Tech pours 10% of its budget in on one player or Notre Dame focuses its full attention on a Texas target, UT might lose each and every battle. Texas will open the purse strings for some special recruits, like it did last year for five-star Justus Terry. Terry chose Texas over heavy favorite Georgia because UT offered more money. "The late surge made by the Longhorns in the recruitment of Terry was one of the biggest upsets of this recruiting cycle," Rivals analyst Adam Friedman said after declaring Texas the No. 1 team for 2025. A late NIL push was suspected and Terry confirmed it in a conversation with Chad Simmons. "I don't know how else to say it — just a straight-up better NIL package,' Terry told Simmons. But Terry was right around Signing Day and it put the cherry on top of Texas' No. 1 class. UT can't do that for every player. There have been some big recruiting wins in June, but the nine that got away will haunt Sark for a long time. Advertisement OT Felix Ojo | Five-star | Texas Tech Red Raiders Texas lost Ojo to Texas Tech and yes, it was a 'straight-up better NIL package.' The 6-foot-6, 275-pound prospect was offered a deal is reportedly a fully-guaranteed three-year, $5.1 million dollar name, image and likeness licensing contract from Texas Tech mega-booster Chad Campbell, the founder of the university's Matador Club. Texas may have dodged a bullet with Ojo, but only time will tell. WR Kaydon Finley | Four-star | Notre Dame Fighting Irish Losing the son of former Texas Longhorns TE and former Super Bowl champion Jermichael Finley is tough to swallow. Finley told ESPN, "Notre Dame doesn't just recruit any type of player. You have to be a special person to be able to go there. So the people they're bringing in with me had a big impact on where I decided to go." DL Bryce Perry-Wright | Five-star | Texas A&M Aggies The No. 2-ranked defensive lineman in the 2026 class, five-star Bryce Perry-Wright is headed to College Station, choosing the Aggies over Clemson and Texas. Texas A&M made up a lot of ground with Perry-Wright on his official visit to Aggieland. DB Chace Calicut | Four-star | Georgia Bulldogs It looked for a long time like the Longhorns were in a great spot to get four-star safety Chace Calicut to commit to Texas. But that didn't happen. The Houston North Shore prospect committed to recruiting rival Georgia. Even though the safety told recruiting analysts Texas was the winner behind the scenes. "I made my decision down there at Georgia during the official visit," Calicut said after committing. LB Xavier Griffen | Five-star | Albama Crimson Tide The 6-foot-4, 205-pound prospect committed to Alabama and is now the top-ranked prospect among 14 commits in Alabama's incoming class. "Growing up, just seeing them, all the draft picks and stuff that they've had -- all the guys they've put in the league -- it speaks for itself," Griffin told ESPN. "They have history and they're really clear about what they're trying to build with this new staff." OL Zaden Krempin | Four-star | Texas A&M One of the nation's most coveted offensive lineman for the 2026 class, Prosper OL Zaden Krempin's lengthy recruiting trail has ended in College Station. He is rated the 19th-best interior offensive lineman in the nation and the 34th-best overall recruit in Texas in the Class of 2026 by 247Sports. RB Amari Latimer | Four-star | Wisconsin Badgers The four-star running back cancelled his Texas visit at the last minute and committed to Wisconsin, joining his brother, cornerback Geimere Latimer II, in Madison. Ranked as the No. 32 overall recruit in Georgia and the No. 17 running back nationally, Latimer was expected to visit Austin as part of his recruitment process. EDGE Dre Quinn | Four-star | Clemson Tigers The 6-foot-4, 220-pound pass rusher out of Buford, Georgia, had narrowed his choices to Clemson and Texas. Ultimately, Quinn picked the Tigers. Rated as the No. 105 overall prospect in the country by Rivals, Quinn also ranks as the No. 13 edge rusher in the class and the No. 15 player in the state of Georgia. DT James Johnson | Four-star | Georgia Bulldogs No. 1 defensive lineman James Johnson has committed to the Georgia Bulldogs to play for Kirby Smart and company. This was a battle to the end, but Georgia made sure they were the ones to come out on top. 'Georgia is DLU,' Johnson told On3. 'They are all about development.
